Destiny Could Be Worth $1 Billion, Ghosts Pre-Order Update
Activision has a thing for billion-dollar franchises. World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and now Skylanders have all hit that lofty mark for the publisher.
And they've got the same aspirations for Bungie's hotly anticipated open-world shooter, Destiny. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said during an earnings call that with current internal estimates, Destiny will become another billion-dollar franchise. That's the plan, anyway.
So, that sort of implies sequels, doesn't it? But this is basically a MMOFPS so maybe we're talking about expansions, not sequels. Either way, it seems that Destiny is going to be around for a while, and that's probably good news for fans of the genre. As for Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders, Hirshberg says the numbers are "well below" that of the record-setting Black Ops II. However, he has an explanation:
"However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past [Call of Duty] pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition."
Well, that's a valid point. He also added that Ghosts pre-orders are still double that of the original Black Ops, so that's not a bad sign. That all being said, many analysts have noted the slight downturn in popularity for the blockbuster franchise; it'll be interesting to see if Battlefield can steal away more market share this year.
