Destiny Could Be Worth $1 Billion, Ghosts Pre-Order Update

Activision has a thing for billion-dollar franchises. World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and now Skylanders have all hit that lofty mark for the publisher.

And they've got the same aspirations for Bungie's hotly anticipated open-world shooter, Destiny. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said during an earnings call that with current internal estimates, Destiny will become another billion-dollar franchise. That's the plan, anyway.

So, that sort of implies sequels, doesn't it? But this is basically a MMOFPS so maybe we're talking about expansions, not sequels. Either way, it seems that Destiny is going to be around for a while, and that's probably good news for fans of the genre. As for Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders, Hirshberg says the numbers are "well below" that of the record-setting Black Ops II. However, he has an explanation:

"However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past [Call of Duty] pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition."

Well, that's a valid point. He also added that Ghosts pre-orders are still double that of the original Black Ops, so that's not a bad sign. That all being said, many analysts have noted the slight downturn in popularity for the blockbuster franchise; it'll be interesting to see if Battlefield can steal away more market share this year.

Oh silly me, I thought EA was doing Destiny, I take back my comments about Activision not investing in new IPs.

It would be crazy if CoD: Ghost Whisperer sold more on PS4 than Xbone wouldn't it? That timed exclusive DLC would be a mistake.

Hahaha. I suppose they HAVE to present something to their shareholders as to why COD Ghosts won't perform as well.

I am one of those people who pre-ordered and love COD BLOPS2 but have lost nearly all interest in COD Ghosts.

They were completely wrong to try and sell the engine as new, when consumers aren't that dumb these days.

At this point, I fully intend to invest in Battlefield 4.

i will take KZ SF,BF4 and destiny is enough FPS for me and COD ghost is just boring and uninteresting for me now it's got nothin new or intreging to offer just the same crap from the last gen.
i'm going more for action/adventure into next-gen or character/action(platformer) games so the order looks good.

look at some point in time even stupid sheepish consumers can see the lack of improvement or gud change in games and won't buy it it's just that simple. and yes i'm much more impressed with bf4 and i think i will take some market share away mostly in the older gamer 17 to 24 to 35 the 13 yr olds will probs still go COD.

happy gaming =)

still not sure which platform Ill get COD Ghosts for. Leaning towards the PS3 as most of the guys i play with will not be early PS4 adopters.

I think the new consoles, and mainly their new ip's, is just what we needed to turn the video game world drones away from cod. It had a good run and this game will sell a lot too, but with new consoles and new ip's, there should be enough content to draw the drones away from future installments and into new games. These consoles can only help speed up this process. Fingers crossed.

Stay Classy PSX...

I think the generation of the new consoles will be the open-world/sandbox era thanks to the drastically significant increase in RAM.

the much touted COD demise - good luck with that.

COD has never been about awe inspiring graphics or innovation (well since COD4 anyway) its about an adrenaline 60fps team death match.

Open world is fine and all - and GTA5 may sell more than Ghosts - but when you consider 3-4 CODs will be released by the time GTA6 shows up and the multiplayer map packs keep a coming - COD will continue to make major coin for Activision.

I'll take quality over quantity. COD can have their yearly release. I'm going to be sticking with GTA5.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but, since we are talking about Bungie and their new IP, I might as well mention one of their old IP's.

Oni is what I consider one of the most memorable games I have ever played, with great fighting mechanics and crazy guns. I still find the combat more enjoyable than the likes of Sleeping Dogs, Batman, or even Yakuza. Oni did suffer from poor level design, pacing, and production values.

I fail to understand why, when Bungie was thinking of creating a new IP, it had to go with the FPS mechanic, when in the past it had created an entire new genre in a game like Oni?

Already got my pre-order in for the PS4 version of Destiny. I'm giving Bungie a chance to win me over with this despite the lack of a traditional singleplayer campaign because its games are very fun to play. But if the game is a disaster I don't know if I'll be too quick to buy anything with the Bungie label on it again. Not surprised that so far Ghosts pre-orders are tracking behind Black Ops but we all know the game will be a massive seller once it's out. The only game I give a slight chance of outselling Ghosts is GTA V, and I kind of hope it does. I'm actually not a CoD hater (personally have no interest, I go to Killzone or Halo for my FPS fix) I just think GTA V looks fantastic and if it lives up to what Rockstar is trying to do it deserves to outsell everything else.
