Rumor: Sony Liverpool Had Been Working On PS4 Launch Titles

HEY. If they were working on stuff for the PS4, why stop 'em?

Yesterday, we learned the sad news that part of Wipeout developer Sony Liverpool would be disappearing. But that wasn't interesting (just a little sad); the resulting info is most certainly interesting.

According to Eurogamer citing a "reliable source," the team had been working on a Wipeout installment for the next PlayStation console, which would've been "dramatically different" than previous series iterations. They were also working on a stealthy, Splinter Cell-type game, which is a definite surprise. As another surprise, it had apparently been in development for 12-18 months... Both games in question were initially slated to be launch titles for the PS4.

So, that implies that PS4 projects have been in the works at various Sony first-party studios for a year and a half, right? This leads us to a whole lot of questions, the biggest of which being- "So...um...when's that PS4 coming, anyway?" On pins and needles much?

I didn't like reading that Liverpool was disolved. While I never felt I gave WipEout HD the time I wanted, I do really value the franchise. THe Vita game is on my first batch of games list. That with Madden and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Stealthy game, eh? hmm. I like stealthy.
A year and half, eh? Man, nearly seems like they had a Nov 2012 soft date for PS4. Doesn't look like that's going to happen now, but intriguing nonetheless.

Wipeout 2048 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are by far my favorite Vita titles so far. Though running at only 30fps each (presumably for conserving battery), both games surprisingly don't feeled nerfed, and bringing the console experience mobile, while packing so much content on the go never before experienced on a hand held.

Hey master shams, long time no see.
Crap so NG Vita is 30fps?
...
I'll still get it

Yea and WipeOut vita is nice I tried it a few weeks back and thought it looked pretty slick. Effect wise it seemed better to me than Wipeout Hd.

Whenever the time becomes right I'll pick one of 'em up.
I'm sort of hoping for a product revision with longer battery life. Not a deal breaker or nothing of course.

I've been around, Sensei Temjin, just not commenting as much (I got a long work commute these days). And no sweat about the battery life. Even with Uncharted:Golden Abyss, I'd get about 6hrs on flight mode before needing a recharge. Surprisingly, I get less battery life playing Rayman, which runs at 60fps, confirming my suspicion about framerate and power consumption. The Vita really is a joy.

Wonder why they canned em and if the games survived with anyone else. PS4 is gonna need a helluva lineup. Any decent game needs 2 years of dev time, maybe 3 for a new console so it's getting to be around that time. I'm more interested in having the best software than the MS threat so I hope they don't just release PS4 as a reaction to the 720 or whatever they decide to call it.

I think 2 years is cutting it close. 2.5 or 3 seem to be the sweet spot for games. But yeah I too wonder if they were canned or given to another studio.

Depends on the developer, Sony's top tier are pretty fast like Naughty Dog.

I hope the talent from Liverpool is not let go by Sony even if the studio dissolves. They could use their power in other areas in other studios.

Studio Liverpool (aka Psygnosis) used to be one of my favourite studios. I have so many fond memories going back to the mid 80's playing their games.

A sad moment indeed.

Yes me too. This studio has been around for THREE decades.

Why shut it down? Why not sell it instead? Surely it must be worth *something?

Perhaps the projects were rationalized into other locations and those working on them are moving with them. Remember it's not the entire campus, and they announcement talks about some moving to other roles/locations. If you look at their game production over the last 6-7 years it's been pretty much limited to 1 Wipeout game on PS3 and 2 wipeout games on PSP and 1 wipeout game on PS Vita. It's tough to justify keeping a whole studio for that kind of production, rationalization may have been the best choice.

That's probably so, High.

But still... We talk about a brand that has deep, deep roots in gaming history. Why did they even change the name of the company when they bought it? I didn't even know this is where Psygnosis went until now!

Sad about Liverpool Studio. I really hope that WipEout lives on, if only because of the legacy that it holds. Maybe it'll go to Evolution or someone. As for the other game... that sounds really interesting. I hope that it is shuttled off to another studio to aim for a PS4 launch.

Don't forget the taser. Nothing better than spontaneous combustion begun by tasering.

How many in the last 5 years? How many in the last 10? Most of their output happened in the 80s and 90s.

Colony Wars was the bomb. Too bad there aren't any great star ship games anymore. Anyone do X-Wing or Tie-Fighter back in the 386 and 486 days? The very best those types ever got. The sequel X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter wasn't too great.
