The 2013 FPS Battle: Does Killzone Beat BF4 And Ghosts?

Obviously, there's absolutely zero chance Killzone: Shadow Fall outsells either Battlefield 4 or Call of Duty: Ghosts. The latter two franchises are far more popular and of course, they're multiplatform.

But in terms of quality, do you think the PS4 exclusive will outstrip both heavyweight first-person shooter contenders this year? In the eyes of some, Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 were better than any CoD or Battlefield entry during the current generation, although many multiplayer aficionados will inevitably disagree. Multiplayer is the bread-and-butter mode for EA and Activision and while it's important for Killzone, developer Guerrilla Games has always focused quite heavily on the campaign.

Maybe it's more accurate to say the single-player portions of Killzone have been better than the competition, and the same may be true of Shadow Fall. But what if the multiplayer segment is just as good, if not better, than what we find in BF4 or Ghosts? At this point, that seems unlikely. The multiplayer reveal for this year's CoD has proven that multiplayer is once again a top priority for Infinity Ward. Thus far, all we've seen of Shadow Fall is footage from the campaign.

Do you think the new Killzone has what it takes to become the best overall shooter of the 2013?

I'm guessing KZ will be the better quality game, in as far as graphics and tech impressiveness go. Everything else seems like it's up in the air. True, KZ has that great AI, but CoD and BF don't need it as much as they don't push the same sort of Helghast bullet sponge kind of enemy. No, CoD is more shoot 'em down quickly by the numbers style. Those AI calculations could just be used somewhere else with more pay off.

Personally, I'm more interested into the pseudo-Star Wars vibe KZ has going on for it.

In the end of it all I can only say my excitement for next-gen FPS games are nominal at best. I'm much more excited for stuff like the new SPlinter Cell.
I got my SC: HD collection today. I love it. And I can't believe I fell for the training level lock-pick design flaw YET AGAIN. Haha!

Those people in those military games still take more bullets than a human should and still be able to function.

That's why I prefer to play Arma. One bullet can drop you at anytime. Get a vital shot to the leg and you can't stand any more. Can even die from blood loss from some wounds, if a medic doesn't get to you in time.

to be fair temjin, they may have bullet sponges in killzone but i rather have them instead of call of duties endless enemy spawns. most of the time those spawns are in tight places too. not to mention how cheap vetaran mode is. i got stuck on a hill in a call of duty in veteran for about an hour dying. endless super accurate enemies shooting at you, useless ally AI, and a main character that would carefully walk down some stairs while all hell is going on around him.

John I'm not ragging on kz for it. It's just how it's style of play is.
Besides Killzone did rip that infinite respawn stuff off in some kz2 levels if you've forgotten.

I'm inclined to say that Shadow Fall will go under appreciated in not only sails but also review scores. But then I remember how popular the PS4 is shaping up to be. GG is known for AAA console pushing quality. With out much out there this early in the next gen this could be a grand welcoming for some KZ take over.
I loved KZ2 and 3 and hope they keep the style going with SF + some subtle next gen innovation.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Shadow Fall the only true next gen game in the mentioned bunch?

I think in terms of quality KillZone will prevail as it always has, followed by BF then CoD. But in terms of sales its obvious the winner. But honestly as rewarding as sales are for a company itll should be very gratifying when (and of course, if) KZ rakes in some good scores the high praise.

No question about it, if the scores of Shadow Fall are lower it will be because it dropped the ball on somewhere other than the gameplay and technicals.

No matter how I look at it when I think upon my KZ experience (even though I didn't like 3) it was more of an actual experience and the others are more like driving a camera on a dolly cart through a set piece.

It already has. Killzone is actually a video game. While BF4 and CoD are just excuses to kill each other. Space Nazi's on a mission for vengeance is way more unique than Russians teaming up with middle easterners cause they got a nuke from koreans and they want to destroy stuff cause they want to.

It even gives the multiplayer some story driven edge to it. You're either the ISA trying to fight off the pissed off space nazi's or your the pissed off space nazi's trying to kill the ISA. But i didnt like Skyrim so no one listens to me anyway lol

Can't speak for multiplayer, but I've found all three series to be pretty droll from a campaign perspective. I'd say it comes down to which one can be the most impactful and my money would be on KZ. At least Guerilla is delving into a cold war kind of scenario than the balls-to-the-wall mentalities of Ghosts and BF4. On the other hand, Ghosts does have that guy writing and the comments about him looking at gaming as an artistic project because you never see the protagonist and yet must still make an emotional connection, are intriguing, to say the least.

Man... I just want another FPS to hit me as hard as Resistance 3 did. That felt like a leap in the storytelling of that particular genre that nothing else (besides Bioshock and I don't think of that as an FPS in the same vein as these militaristic titles) has matched before or since. But then, my experience with FPS games is rather limited, so I'm probably just talking fluff. Whatever, you all know what I'm like when I start to waffle on.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Killzone has NEVER beaten any of these games. Don't get me wrong, I play all 3 of these FPSers and I love'em. But every Killzone feels like you are playing in a clunky, heavy suit. It feels slower and has a ugly brown look and feel to it compared to the other games.

NOw Im not sure how the new Killzone will end up. Now, because of all the good games coming out for the ps3, and me buying an Ouya for playing all the old rpgs on my tv, I might not get it anyways. Then again, I may have preordered it and forgot about it. heh.

Slow? I've never really felt that with KZ. But in any case, what's wrong with it not having the same speed as the others? Not everything has to be played at 100 mph you know. I don't understand why people nowadays are so obsessed with everything being fast and Hollywood action-movie paced.

It feels like a human moving, not like a robot sliding along a pane of glass.

That might just be one of the big reasons Killzone 2 outscored every CoD and Battlefield title by a fair amount. Guerrilla actually tried to legitimize a stale, predictable genre.

Well, it didn't outscore Modern Warfare 1 or 2 but, hey, it's just numbers.

Guerilla gets an A for adding weight to movement and an D- for the camera speed. Real people don't slowly turn their body to shoot in the opposite direction They pivot. And watch any real marksman or soldier and tell me how much 'weapon sway' there is. It sure as hell isn't visible, if any. Battlefield struck a way better balance. KZ2's campaign was good on par with some of the lesser CoDs, but KZ3 was horrible and boring.

I agree with most people here, the slow feeling of KZ2 was a breath of fresh air. Feeling like I'm on multidirectional rollerskates is not what I want in a shooter. I like weight and feeling like I'm controlling a human.

Yeah i think KZ will have a far better campaign. Multiplayer should be fun but i don't think it will hold a candle to Bf4. Graphics speaking... KZ wins it hands down although bf4 is looking awfully purty. I think the new frostbite engine is going to be quite impressive to be honest. Either way i look forward to both. My most anticipated at this time though would be the division. That game looks super slick and really unique. Can't wait!!!

I find all those FPS boring. How about we get a new Resistance (asking for a miracle right?) or a Far Cry 4 that takes place in Alaska or Africa. That would be very neat.

Killzone as others have said feels like you're playing in a heavy suit. Battlefield is just too realistically boring for me and COD doesn't have enough replay value for me. I have a life, I'm not going to play COD multi player every day and I'm not going to buy COD for it's single player lol... who buys COD for it's single player anyway? A small percentage.

I'm not convinced that they fixed the stuff that the old games had/have. I was watching the MP reveal and I seen a guy get shot around a corner. I have a feeling the lag comp isn't gone either. That stuff is really annoying, you shouldn't be penalized because you have a good internet speed, i used to have bad net before and i still pulled weight, but this is crazy.

I was disappointed with KZ3s storyline and how they made the story follow the CoD template that KZ2 didn't.

However I do love the KZ universe so I am willing to bet that KZ will have the better story and hopefully more inspired single player scenarios.

I actually think KZ2 before it was patched to feel more like CoD was an incredibly experience, the weighty feel guns had and the movement was just so incredible and really immersed me in the game.

KZ3 didn't control anything like a CoD. The idea that Guerrilla copied CoD with KZ3 has gotten blown WAY out of proportion. All it needed was one or two headlines to that effect and before you knew it, every gamer (most of whom had rarely, if ever played, CoD, and only knew Killzone) was ranting and raving.

KZ3 also had a narrative that, while not as good as KZ2, was still ten times better than any CoD or Battlefield I've played, with the possible exception of the original Modern Warfare. Again, blown way, way out of proportion, mostly by people who really aren't familiar with CoD, but love to hate it.

Ben, while KZ3 did still have weight to it, it didn't feel nearly is awesome as KZ2 did. I actually didn't read any articles on this I just noticed it myself when I was playing the game. Everything in KZ3 felt a little faster to me.

KZ3s narrative was better than CoD and BF games, which is why I said it wasn't as good as KZ2s, which felt more directed. The idea of KZ3 was awesome but I feel like they missed some great opportunities, hopefully Shadow Fall will deliver a story at least as good as KZ2.

As for the controls, KZ2 multiplayer before they patched it felt incredible. It had a great sense of weight and the aim assist was very limited. A couple weeks later they patched it and it really changed the feel of the game, and while it didn't feel exactly like CoD, it had a feeling somewhere in the middle of KZ2 and CoD or Battlefield and I just didn't like it as much.

So what's your point? That Killzone 3 is still better than any CoD or Battlefield? ...isn't that essentially my point? My point is also that it's still a lot heavier than either of those games, which is true. There's nothing else to talk about. As far as I'm concerned, all you're doing is comparing the two best FPSs of the generation, with the exception of Resistance 3.

My point is that this is a Killzone article, and I was just saying how I hope they go back to having it feel like KZ2 instead of KZ3 because KZ3 in terms of control and story were a step back from KZ2 in my opinion. I was mostly comparing KZ with itself even though your article is comparing it with the giants. I think that only Guerrilla can destroy its own game by trying too hard to mimic its competition.

As for it beating the other FPS giants, well it never will sales wise unless it ends up being some sort of anomaly, but I do prefer its SP to those giants hands down. Multiplayer is at least on par with CoD but I think Battlefield just has the scope and scale that I want in an online shooter.

There's no doubt in my mind that Killzone: Shadow Fall will be the best of the three games, by far. In fact, I'd say it stands a good chance to be the best FPS of the year. The campaigns in 2 and 3 have me confident enough that the campaign in this will be solid and I've always enjoyed multiplayer in this series. Shadow Fall won't sell as many copies as the other two games, but as long as it does well enough and has a good online community so the game is supported for a while after it launches, that's all that matters.
