Alan Wake Dev: New Consoles Are A "Quantum Leap" Forward
A lot of developers are working on next-gen projects right now, as indicated by multiple job listings and every now and then, the developers themselves.
The most recent studio to reveal they're working on something for new hardware is Alan Wake designer Remedy Entertainment. In speaking to the German branch of GamesIndustry International (and as translated at GameSpot), Remedy head of franchise development Oskari Häkkinen said the new machines will indeed be much more powerful.
"Right now we're working as always with a relatively small team on a next generation project. You always ask yourself: Can the new consoles really be that much better than the old ones? Be assured: They are. It is a quantum leap forward."
There's no knowing if he's talking about the new PlayStation or Xbox (or both), but he did use the phrase "they are," so you have to assume he's referring to both. Then again, translations can be wonky. We're just hoping Remedy decides to bring Alan Wake into the next generation; it was only available on the 360 this generation but it was well worth playing. Still one of the better stories told in the past five or six years.

I can't say it's true/false for the majority of 360 players, but in the little slice of XBL live I and my friends live in, we're a pretty diverse group. I play mainly RPGs and games like the AC series. A good number like the sports games while others enjoy both TPS and FPS.
I like a good FPS, too, but that usually isn't my game type of choice when I have one to make.

I knew the next consoles would not cater more towards the casual gamers, or be no real leap forward or whatnot.
Can't wait. This will be friggin' GREAT! This will mean Crysis-3-on-max-settings type of great. This means Skyrim-engine-on-full-effect kinda great. Time to kick that seven year old box out of the livingroom, time for an upgrade!

Check out the new screen I added. This is from Nvidia's "New Dawn" demo. This isn't a game, or nothing. Just a tech demo that showcases the real time power of current high end gpu's. I would imagine we'll be seeing detail ballpark to this. Pretty cool, eh? You can see individual hair fuzz on her face and stuff. And check out the detail of her eye sclera.

But from a practical perspective I've never been too impressed by those kind of demos, simply cause that level of graphics traditionally forces a very restricted, linear gameplay, something that I just can't stand.
But I love games like Crysis and GTA. And I heard the other day that a maxed out Crysis 2 on PC looked *better* than RAGE. Better than RAGE!?
And that, coupled with the latest Crysis 3 video clip that claimed to be realtime rendering, well that is just so insanely more than enough, visually, for me as a starting point for the next gen consoles.
That, and it really bugs me how they had to nerf Skyrim to squeeze it into the PS3. I don't want that to happen to Fallout 4 as well.
Damn how psyched I am for new hardware now. I am dying here I am sitting. Dying, I say!

crysis 2 with the right mods installed is pretty much the best looking game out there!
especially if you can run the crysis revival mod, oh my f*cking lord that was beautiful!
made the original crysis look like a snes game!
makes me cry that my 4500 dollar gaming laptop cant play it!
:(
curse you nvidia, and your anciently long driver development times!!!!!!!!!
the 680Ms have been out for 3 f*cking months now and they STILL have not released a proper driver for them!
no wonder sleeping dogs is struggling to get above 20FPS!

You must be a fun character to meet in a MMORPG, team up with and go somewhere out in the wilderness with a backpack full of medkits and ammo to seek fortune and phat lewt.
The stuff that goes on in your head would add so much to what actually happens on screen :D (and I mean that in the most lighthearted way possible)

Crysis 2, on the other hand, tries much harder to emulate reality, more like cinematic sfx reality, but still very realistic. There are effects, like tone mapping, which mimics the light properties of "radiance," where as light rays hit an object and bounce off they carry now a bit of the hue of the object they bounced from. In games today it's smoke and mirrors with it being faked, but the fact that Crytek tries to represent these very lifelike elements creates for a strikingly real experience. There's a whole lot of this stuff that the Cryengine does that makes it technological feast of brain melting goodness.
Anyway, while Rage on PC doesn't have the realism of Crysis 2, it one ultra fine looking game. I just love that that the crappy texture grow in issues from console are virtually non-existent. It's great! And I only had to wait 7 months to play it on a PC that didn't crash every time.. hehe

(I'm not very far in the game. Half the time I just load these and run around for 15min, oogle, then call it good for a day haha)

im worried about just 1 thing though.
current generation games were hurt by such amazing technology.
developers this gen have been concerned by only 1 thing.
graphics!
f*ck how fun the game is!
f*ck how good the gameplay is!
f*ck the story.
f*ck the controls.
ect, ect.
all they care about is michael bay big explosions!
so, what im worried about is next gen will be even worse!
given more power, im wondering if it will help the problem or make it worse.
im a graphics whore as much as the next guy, but its come to a point where its getting way out of hand!
games need to be fun to play first, THAN look good!
not the other way around!
just wish developers would understand and remember that...........

BTW, Alan Wake is on PC as well. And yes, it's a freaking great story.
