Rumor: GameStop Expects PS4, Xbox 720 To Hit In 2013

Well, you know...GameStop employees. How the heck do I know if they're telling the truth? Maybe they're about ready to quit and they just want to have some fun. Maybe they're freakin' delusional.

I don't really know; I only know what a few of them have told me in the past week. In digging around, trying to see when the retailer is expecting to stock either the new PlayStation or Xbox, a handful of employees said GameStop is indeed expecting both next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft to be on store shelves some time next year.

Not that that would be a huge shock to anyone, but it's interesting, especially because neither new system has been officially unveiled just yet. But it seems the company has been informing managers of stores that they'll begin "prepping" for the next generation in January, and they're even talking about early hardware pre-sells. Anyone who has walked into a GameStop in the past few years knows just how hard they push their pre-orders, so that isn't surprising, either.

As for when, from what I could gather, it seems the retailer is actually expecting the PS4 and Xbox 720 to launch relatively close to one another, perhaps in the same financial quarter. That, I'm not buying. I believe there may be another gap of at least a year between the two systems, but that's just an opinion. Anyway, take this with a grain of salt...like I said, you know...GameStop. 'rolls eyes' Fun to think about, though, isn't it?

It could happen but not until holiday 2013. I am sure Microsoft and Sony will give us specs right away as well. Unlike stupid Nintendo who is releasing a new console in November 2012 and still hasn't told anyone what the specs are!!!! I smell fear and Nintendo knows they have a slightly better console than the current gen. If it was a quantum leap forward don't you think they would be bragging right now! Also, Sony and Microsoft really don't want to give Nintendo a 2 year head start. Well, maybe they will because they aren't really in competition with Casual Nintendo.

Im ready to know what's next! I'll be getting a PS4 for sure at launch or down the road. Im not sure if Ill get a Xbox 720 because I bought a Xbox 360 for the few jrpg exclusive so it depends on the games. I would love GTA V and MG5 to be launch titles.

There was a recent Wall Street Journal article about the ten worst companies to work for. My old bosses at Bank of NY made the list. So did Radio Shack. But for our interests here GAME STOP made that same list. Seems there are quite a few disgruntled employees at that company judging by the boards watched for the story by the Journal. I woudl say it makes sense that Game Stop workers wouldn't mind leaking info just to screw with their own company's sales. Why sales? Well there is a group of consumers who will assume that if there is a new system coming out then they should wait for the new system so the current one gets dirt cheap along with this gen's games. I can easily see that; hell people I know at Best Buy (Think they were listed too in the article.) are told to downplay upcoming units or ignore them when talking to consumers. Again no one wants people with money in their pockets waiting around with it instead of spending it now or spending it now and then upgrading later.

Could be, could be. On the Sony side though I see a lot of fancy exclusives coming out next year that will deserve as much focus as possible since talk of a new console can only harm their sales. We don't know if PS4 will be B/C although they'd be insane not to offer that we saw what happened to PS2 b/c.

MS needs new hardware pretty bad and we know Sony doesn't want to let them have that big upper hand this time so I think we could see a lot of positioning going on in the near future but it's hard to see them going into next E3 by revealing systems that would need to come out very soon after.

I'm ready...maybe not for the gaming but certainly for the expanded media function I'm sure it's going to bring to the table. I use my PS3 for so many things other than gaming.

Knowing gamestop, they don't know and don't care when they're being released. They'll probably let you put a down payment down now if you want to.

Im not ready yet. I really cant see much improvement between this gen & next gen. Im not impressed with the WiiU and this coming from a former nintendo fanboy. I perfectly happy with my Ps3 & Xbox 360. One things for sure im never buying a console on launch day, week & or month again no matter how cheap the price is. After beening burned by microsoft at this of this generation.

I highly doubt they'll be here next year. If you think about it, E3 will probably be the unveiling stage as usual. And that doesn't happen until halfway through the year. Then they'll need to build hype for a while as they get the production lines rolling and more importantly, get the software ready for launch. They usually announce it and then give themselves a year to launch if not a little longer. Unless they have been super busy for the last two years on all of the above points. But, I'd be surprised if it launches next year. Some PS3 games keep getting pushed back for longer than that, never mind a new hardware platform. I also doubt that SONY and MS will launch at the same time. There will probably be a few quarters in between them. Just my guess!

GS probably shouldn't factor next gen hardware sales into their budget; if they were the Titanic they would have already broken in half and started sinking. Yeah the lights might still be on but that place is hemorrhaging.

I would believe it. I mean it's not the most reliable source but it's not so farfetched that a GS employee would just spill the beans on this information either.

I'm excited to see the new consoles, but not excited that this generation is coming to a close.

On a side note, I do really think that these next-gen consoles are going to be very heavy on the digital side of things. I forsee Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation Store having their own retail websites (similar to amazon, or iTunes store) where you can scroll through content and simply purchase items with a click of the button and have it ready to go already downloaded to the system back at home. If that's the case then I don't know how much Gamestop would benefit from "factoring this into their 2013 sales". But we'll see.

Plus I still have over 100+ titles in my PS3 backlog alone, never mind all the other backlogs in all of my other console & handheld collections too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sony will not get beat to market with the new console. I don't doubt they've got announcement plans already done and waiting. They could announce PS4 tomorrow if MS spilled the beans on what's next for Xbox. My guess is Sony will let MS announce first and let MS give a release date first as well. And then, and only then, Sony will announce as well.

Whatever date MS picks, Sony will announce a release within two weeks of that date. Before or after. But within two weeks. The general perception is that Sony "lost" this gen because WW sales are only now looking equal and they played catch up the whole gen. Regardless of the fact that the RRoD existed, humans memory's are short and they will only look back at the numbers sold. Sony will do whatever it takes to fight the perception of being in third place, despite making hardware that lasts a long ass time. Launching a year after automatically places you in third place. Won't happen this time. Will not.
