PlayStation Plus Trailer: Why Your PS4 Begs For Membership

Yes, it's true that you require PlayStation Plus in order to play games online with the PlayStation 4.

However, there are plenty of other reasons to subscribe to the premium PSN service, as this new trailer indicates. And for only $50/year (or barely more than $4/month), you get some seriously cool bonuses.

In addition to the online action, there's the Instant Game Collection, which can quickly expand your video game library, exclusive discounts on hundreds of games and other forms of content, cloud storage, and early access to beta tests and demos. Yeah, I think that's worth four bucks a month, don't you? Some may not like the idea of being forced to pay to play games online but then again, is anyone "forcing" you to do anything? Of course not.

There's no doubt that PS4 owners will get a lot more out of their new system if they're Plus subscribers.

I still don't understand why we can't play PS3 games that we bought from PS Store on the PS4. Instead they are going to make us buy it again only this time it's on a cloud service. Pathetic.

^What kind of a question is that? You can't omit b/c in hopes of making a flawed point. It's ridiculous to not allow content purchased through PSN to carry over with the PS4. This is where I get a little pissed as a console/pc gamer. Consoles need to catch up with the times...geesh.

Yeah I know they haven't really said much on the subject but regardless I l know that we are going to have to pay something. The least they can do is like a $5 fee and even then it still sucks.

Perhaps I am giving it away, perhaps I am selling it. Whether or not I choose to keep my PS3 shouldn't effect the content I've bought on the PSN that will be marketed and sold on the PS4. When I build a new computer (something I did over the summer) I didn't have to make sure I kept my old one so I could still play content I bought 8 years ago on Steam.

@MeXiCaN,

I don't understand why you (and everyone else for that matter) find it so difficult to just play the PS3 games you bought off of the PS Store on your PS3 while Gaikai gets sorted out for PS4.

How difficult is it really to have a PS3 and PS4 connected to the same TV, or different ones for that matter?

It's not, unless you want to make it out to be.

I know all I have to do is keep my PS3 but it just seems a little fucked up that we can't play PS store games on the PS4. It's probably going to be possible in the future but since this world is all about money we are probably going to be looking at a fee. So to summarize it all up Ill use this sad face ":(" LMAO Worst ending to a comment ever.

Nobody will be putting a gun to your head to pay the fee if Gaikai winds up being an optional paid service.

Yes, I don't want to pay fees for Gaikai either, but we don't even know how that is going to work, and it's pointless to worry about things like that before we even know all of the details.

Well that's just stupid...it's all about personal choice. The government should not grossly tax something simply to force choice on its citizens. The same thing was attempted in NY involving soda and thankfully it was ruled illegal.

It's easy to not care about something that doesn't concern you but as a responsible citizen you should care about everyone's rights, not just the ones that impact you.

Hate to break it to you but just about everything we consume causes cancer. Again it's all about choice. You clearly need to be informed, last year was the first time in recorded history that more people died from overeating than starvation. Perhaps you should campaign against the fast food industry first. You could save more people, that's for sure.

@MeXiCaN,

I couldn't agree with you more on the subject of cigarettes.

@Jawknee,

That is one of the most clueless and ignorant comments I have ever read on this site.

While adults have more than every right in the world to consume cigarettes and ruin their bodies and lives by doing so, all children regardless, and any adults that choose to not to be exposed to second hand smoke, have a right to not be forced into being exposed to that garbage.

Most especially and importantly, it's the children that should be protected from things that can do them harm, cigarette smoke being one of the very tip-top things that they should be kept far, far away from.

Imho, saying or doing otherwise should be more than fair grounds for denying a person the right to have or raise children.

How did an article about the benefits to PS Plus become a discussion board about the cost of cigarettes, government regulations and parenting choices.

As far as the benefits of PS Plus I feel it is a necessary expense and and overall good value. I hope the Gaikai service fee will be included in the price and not separate.

Why does it seem like the UK gets better PS Plus games?
I feel the US PS Plus has been too heavy handed on the indie or cheapo titles. Not that I don't really enjoy Star Wars Pinball Episode V table (22 million!) but I'm jealous nothing's been said about AC3 for the US.

Did you ever consider that EU gets better games because they have bought more PS3s then NA? I don't have proof, but I do assume they have more PS+ subscribers therefore they can offer the developers and/or producers more money to allow their game to be free on PS+.

Well, lets be frank about it. The main incentive is that you will be forced to get PS+ to go online,... I'm sorry but there is no other way to look around that, otherwise I will be paying full price for a game which I cannot access all of its content and I cannot see them giving you discount for buying a game when you're not on PS+ :P I was content with the PS3 online and there will be game I want to play online on the PS4 like the next MGO, but paying a yearly subscription for that when I haven't had to for 5 years on the PS3 just seems like a con.

You can say, "Oh the 360, always had a subscription." Fine, but the Playstation hasn't and I don't see why It should have to now, other than as their upgrading the console, it is the perfect time to slip the system in, so it seems normal...

I should be grateful that I was not charged for on capability for the PS3, sorry I am afraid that is nonsense. I paid for my console and I pay for my internet connect, I shouldn't then have to pay for an online account. The PS3 proved successful without a subscription fee. So now that they're adding a subscription when it is no necessary... yes I am angry.

It was a great feature of the PS3, it is sad to see them cave into the norm. I would have hoped they stood up to this just as they stood up against DRM business, DRM could have easily become the norm' too, but Sony stood up against it and now that backlash has been a success. From a business stand point, it's easy money, from a consumers standpoint its submission not subscription.

If they are going to beef up their online offerings, one of the things they really have to do in order to continue to compete with the xbox, they have to make up for the extra cost somehow.

Every improvement that they do to your online experiences, such as a cross game chat feature, costs them money both to implement and to maintain. If they continue to eat those costs, it will drive them under and then you will be forced to go with the Xbox or the Wii because PS will no longer exist.

Running servers is extremely expensive. A feature like cross-game chat can't be handle by game servers and therefore must be done by Sony servers. Gaikai servers will be another huge expense. Even if these services don't really appeal to you, it is a huge section of the market, and an area in which the PS3 was seriously lacking. They had to seriously enhance their offerings to be competitive, which equals lots of extra costs. If you want PS to continue into the future you have to pay for the services you receive. I think that it's a fair trade. If you don't think so, don't pay for it.

I honestly don't care that it costs to pay online now. Sony was awesome with the PSN being free on the Playstation 3. Now I'm sure the network features will be even better since Sony will have some revenue coming in to better maintain the online service.

I think PS Plus is an amazing deal anyways, NA may not always get the games that other regions do but Sony is always good about making a plethora of games available for free every month. As long as they keep the deep discounts and free games going, PS Plus will continue to be WAY more than just 'paying for online'.

I get where people are coming from when they want to keep the games they bought from the psn like on pc (I would love that), but the nature of console games (excluding bc which isn't an industry standard - Sony has been generous to carry ps1 as far as it has) isn't the same as pc. Yes I too would like them to make our psn libraries available on ps4,, but whether you downloaded them from psn or not, the fact still remains that they were designed FOR PS3.

When you bought your Dreamcast, you didn't expect to play all those Saturn games you bought on it. The difference in this gen is digital distribution, and that is blinding us to the fact that despite both the ps4 and ps3 using the same platform, those games were still designed for PS3.

ARGH! I absolutely articles where everyone has a place to complain about playstation plus. I understand people are broke and don't have enough for it for a year but those same people have enough to pay GameFlop for their Pro memberships. It's so overrated and pointless, you don't save anything racking up points there unless you buy their "x" amount coupons and buy a game with it. GameFlop's membership/point service is such a huge gimmick to get you to keep buying from them and not eBay or amazon. Half the time I find "Like New" games with manuals and everything cheaper than if I used a coupon on a used game at GameStop thats getting off topic. PlayStation Plus is amazing with all the free games and faster internet service which honestly I never had a problem with being a standard member, I get 1 mb/s on standard and 1.5 - 2 mb/s on plus which either way is fast for me. Heres what I suggest, wait till christmas, you know when you get a shit load of money from family, buy a year of Plus...and every tuesday go to the store and buy (not download) everything and you watch how many good games pop up that you'll actually play. Plus is awesome stop being so cheap people its the price of one new game but you'll download over 20 titles over the course of the year...how do you beat that.
