Plus Version Of DriveClub Includes A Platinum Trophy

If you're a hardcore Trophy collector, you'll probably be interested in this.

Evolution Studios design director Paul Rustchynsky posted up a bunch of new DriveClub information in the NeoGAF forums. Included in that info was the fact that those who purchase the PlayStation Plus version of the PS4 racer will be able to nab a Platinum Trophy.

He also said that you would be able to upgrade to the full retail version of the game at a discounted price. The Plus version will be available "well into the new year," so you've got plenty of time to take the leap. Rustchynsky didn't confirm the significance of that discount when you upgrade, but at least it's a discount. He also clarified:

"When you upgrade from the PS+ Edition you get the full digital edition which doesn't require a PS+ subscription."

As a reminder, the Plus edition of DriveClub is still the full game, only "minus a few cars and tracks." I'm not sure if there will be enough incentive to "upgrade" to the full retail version, but maybe die-hard racing fans will take the plunge. Unfortunately, Rustchynsky confirmed there will be no split-screen mode but hey, online racing action is always fun!

What? So they're restricting trophies if you're not on PS+... Have I just read that wrong, if so I won't bother with a PS Trophy ever again.

Yeah that didn't actually make any sense to me. The Plus version is free, so you can't purchase it, but you can purchase the upgrade, but it doesn't say if you need to purchase the upgrade to get the platinum.

I think you read it wrong.

Edit: I also read it wrong. But what Im taking away from it after a few more reads is that it doesnt matter which version you get you can get a platinum trophy. But the better jews is that you dont need PS+ to access the full game. That seems to be a concern for a few readers in this thread.

Yeah agreed, this was very confusing.

Does this mean there will be multiple platinum trophies?

That's a really weird stance on the free games for PSPlus, sounds like they are toying with the idea of offering us incomplete games for our Instant Game Collection to coax a full purchase. That could lead to some horrible doings.

yah there shouldnt be a special ps plus edition. thats just shorthand for an incomplete version of the full game.

I couldn't care less about trophies, but this is a big deal for some people and I don't think this is a smart move from Sony. In a way, the game could be considered "incomplete" with this restriction. Not very smart Sony.

imagine if the Wii U came bundled with a special 'download' version of Zelda Windwaker, missing just a handful of dungeons and items
=p

Oh man! They have a slick looking Wind Waker/Wii U bundle coming out. Curse my early adoption of Nintendo hardware! Argh! =P

In seriousness, yes...withholding dungeons would be bad, bad, BAD! Though I suppose it works better with this type of game than it would with Zelda where the dungeons are needed to advance the story. Still seems like an odd strategy though.

Once it gets down to $249.99 and a game I'd probably consider getting one. By then the better games will be out as well.

Nintendo will need to cut the price of the Wii U to $149.99 if they ever want me to buy one.

I've already played enough Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong games to know what I'm missing out on, and I will be fine to keep missing out on the 3 or 4 exclusive games that come out each year that remotely interest me.

Nintendo has been afflicted with H.U.A. syndrome for the last 12 years, and I just can't support them until they do more than just cater to casual gamers, ultra-hardcore fans, and little kids.

Pft, c'mon dude, there is more value in it than that. If Nintendo titles aren't worth the $300 buy in then lowering the price to $150 isn't worth it to you either. Nintendo offers unique expectancies. But they're obviously not for everyone.

Ugh, his damn apple auto correction. More trouble than its worth.

Supposed to be *Nintendo offers unique experiences. :)

JR, not harping on you, just pointing out that if you aren't all that into their exclusives why would the Wii U ever be worth it considering all the core games you are irked they don't have show up on your first console of choice anyway?

Nintendo found what works for them and if what they offer doesn't interest you then stick with the PS4. For some reason Nintendo is held to a different standard by gamers. I have a hard time believing that if Sony was in their position, and only offered their exclusives, Playstation fans would defend Sony like I do Nintendo. Now that might be because Sony fans prefer Sony exclusives, which is exactly my point.

Seen this before with DC Universe Online, not at all surprised. I know people who won't even play old games if there are no trophies on the PS3.

Achievements and trophies are distracting people from what makes gaming fun.

Nah more like after ive had my fun, I look at the trophy list to see if there is still things I didn't do in the game. I think it adds a lot of challenge plus it gives you recognition for passing these challenges. Doesn't mean you can't do what you like in a game. Just adds value and replayability.

I don't think anyone is really throwing a fit, but here's the confusion: "those who purchase the PlayStation Plus version of the PS4 racer will be able to nab a Platinum Trophy."

The PS Plus version is the IGC one, hence you can't technically "purchase" it unless you want to call downloading it a purchase.

There does appear to be a new feature that allows you to upgrade from the free version to the full retail version, and it is ambiguous as to whether THIS is the "PS Plus" version that you "purchase" or the free one that you download is the PS Plus version, since you aren't going to have the free version unless you have PS Plus.

Your conclusion is the logical one, but all this strange new stuff confuses the issue without an announcement by Sony about partial games in the IGC.

Easy World, my comment was only made in good fun.

I agree that the details are a bit ambiguous, but I think you can agree that it is fun to watch people get riled up over the confusing bits of the article, yet not get happy or excited over the bit that tells them that if they like the game well enough to want to buy it, they can get it at a discounted price.

I think every game should come with that feature as standard if it is bought digitally going forward.

What is your opinion?

I wasn't freaking out or anything, just chatting as usual.

I think it's a good idea to offer the game for ownership at a special price (so you don't have to let your Plus scip to run out in order to buy it permenently) but holding back content from the initial offering is too manipulative for me to support.

I just think they couldent afford to give the full game away to almost every potential buyer? (Who would buy this without mp) Its build around social experience.

I suppose this benefits the PS4 early adopters without PS Plus. Only in that with the 2 week free trial they could opt out of renewing PS Plus but still get a great deal on keeping the full game of Drive Club.
But the irony I see here is that isn't Drive Club a online social game? Don't you basically need PS Plus to experience it?

Since it says the free (don't know how long it will be up for free when the PS4 launches after the 2 weeks is done) PS+ digital version is the full game, minus some cars and tracks, I would wait to buy the physical copy of the game. Doesn't matter either way to me since I'm planning to wait for a while to buy a PS4.

Well, there goes my pre-order for Driveclub from GameStop.

Now that I can get the full game at a discounted price digitally, I don't need the physical copy anymore.

I'll just put that pre-order money towards Destiny, inFamous, and Dragon Age instead. :)

this shouldn't even be up for debate since he clearly meant: Even if you get the free version you get a platinum. Where did he say that full retail version wouldn't have it? Nowhere. People just jump the gun lol
