PS3 Supports 7 Controllers, But PS4 Will Only Support 4

It was recently revealed that the Xbox One will support up to 8 controllers simultaneously.

Inevitably, the question was asked of Sony: How many Dual Shock 4 controllers will the PlayStation 4 support at once?

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida just gave everyone the answer on Twitter. As you can see, the PS4 will support no more than 4 controllers simultaneously.

For the record, the PS3 can actually handle up to 7. However, as most games released don't take advantage of that capability, you probably didn't know that. We also don't know how many Xbox One games will let the players use 8 controllers, or how many gamers will actually want to use 8 controllers at once. In the days before online multiplayer, this would've been cool as hell but now, it feels a tad superfluous.

Then again, maybe in the eyes of some, the Xbox One having the edge in this category is a good thing. By the way, Yoshida has not responded to the questions asking why the PS4 supports fewer controllers than the PS3.

Is this important? Not really. Is this interesting? Very. I can never understand goinf backwards in technology so this is a mystery. I'm sure the "Who actually has 6-7 friends over" will come up but still, why downgrade when there is no (apparent) advantage?

The controller itself is so advanced if you had more than 4 being processed at once the PS4 would explode.

There is no technical reason for this. I believe it is just a business decision.

How many people actually used the full 7 controllers? probably not many.

The Xbox One having 8 means nothing, it will barely ever get used. Until the PS3, every console only supported 4 players.

I don't see this as going backwards at all, it is just a decision.

For me its not important but for some people it might be. I dont think I would ever enjoy having more than 4 people playing at once anyways. But in the circumstance of some indie games creativity and also family or popular digital board games it might be convenient. For instance Risk: Factions supports local co-op but each player has to have their own controller (up to 5). A lot of games are designed that way for some reason, and that could cause a hoopla.

But I couldnt imagine more than 4 people playing Little Big Planet. Or even my latest endeavor, Diablo 3.

Edit: also what about Rockband? You can use up to 5 instruments: 2 guitars, drum set, keyboard, and mic. Does this mean one of the band members has to sit out? OH NO!

I never use more than 4 controllers other than playing as a group on Rock Band, and then it's rare that we have 5 people for Rock Band. But still, hopefully there'll be a way around the limitation for any future Rock Band or similar type game.

Potentially hiking the price by possibly 10% for a feature used possibly by less than 1% of the customer base doesn't really make sense. Hell, I'd like to know how many of you have even used 4-player local mp? That's generous enough. I'd take the gddr5 memory over 8 player local mp support and Kinnect any day. At least I'd see the benefits of that in just about every game I'd play.

Allowing 8 controllers instead of 4 would hike the price of the system by 10%???

Think about it. The ports would, of course, not cost that much, but redesigning the ps4 and the manufacturing process to very well could. Ten percent of 400 is 40. Even if it cost half that much additionally, it still wouldn't justify the extra price for everyone to pay for.

I barely ever used two controllers. Of course, I'm a single-player type and I realize this may be important to the ever-growing multiplayer crowd.

Umm,Rockband or the like???
We have a guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, and singer. How is that going to work if this game or one like it is released???

I count 5 right there...

They are talking about bluetooth controllers.

Nothing will stop the devs from having a usb dongle or w/e.

No problem there.

Considering there were only a small handful of games that utilized 2 controllers and even a smaller collection of games that used 4 controllers, I don't see what the big deal is.

Four is good, the only people that will be care are the rare "Bro Gamer" that plays 8 player sports games, and Xbox loyalists that will boast about the XB1 supporting 8 controllers.

I have three controllers, never played a multi player game with more than two players (including me).

I guess this is not important to me because I mostly play single players games.

I can see this important if you a play a lot of sports games with buddies. But what I don't get is why the PS3 enables a odd # of controllers? At least that feature is fixed with an even # for the PS4.

It's because of the numbers on the PS3 controllers. (1-4). For additional players the first light would remain on as would another of the following three digits...so player five would have lights 1 and 2 lighting..player six 1 and 3 and seven 1 and 4.

they could have done one with player eight as lights 2 and 3 I guess if they wanted.

I was just thinking about that ? because what's say you start playing NBA 2K14 and have 7 good players who are good in baskatball games; 4 human + AI vs. 3 human + 2 AI is a unfair advantage.

@shaydey77

I believe that it was more a technical limitation to the then-existing Bluetooth technology used in PS3 more so than a numbering issue.

I don't think that any more than 7 could operate at one time without interfering with each other's bandwidth, if I remember correctly.

8 is overkill. I cant imagine 8 people playing on anything less than a 90 inch tv so everyone can see and even then they would be all cramped up together smelling each others arm pits and feet. I'm good with four, hell I'm good with 2 controller support

pretty much the only time I ever used more than 4 was on fifa, where we had 3v3, but that was just a big mess, nobody could set up any plays or even work out which player they were controlling

Do developers even make local co-op games anymore? Nearly everything is 'HOPE YOUR FRIENDS BUY THE GAME AND PLAY OVER THE INTERNET, CHEERS!"

WTF!?
so what happens when you have a DS4, a move controller, and a nav controller all hooked up at once?
then add a bluetooth mic for voice chat, and your full.
so what about everyone else that wants to play?
or even games that require wireless accessories like music games?
why place such a stupid restriction on essential features?
typical $ony, yup you can sync your facebook account over to your ps4, but nope you cant have more than 4 bluetooth devices connected.
is this a gaming system, or a mobile phone!?

really i mean who's acutally gunna buy or use more than 4 controllers unless you have a big party or gathering of people like really who agree's with me.i'll never need more than 4 controllers cos me y 2 brothers and a friend thats all i usually have or me and a brother and 2 friends or me and 2 or 3 friends so yea for me 4 controllers or maybe 5 will always be enough you know a back up for one of the 4 controllers or as you say a buck up for playing just you. i can't see anyone needing or wanting or actually getting and using 8 controllers but i guess MS just wants max money aye greedy beggars and hey i didn't know bout the ps3 7 controllers i've only ever have 4 'working' controllers anyway.

happy gaming =)
