PlayStation 4 Launches In Japan On February 22, 2014

For the first time ever, a new PlayStation console will launch later in Japan.

The PlayStation 4 has been given a November 15 release date for the US and November 29 for Europe, but Japanese gamers won't be able to purchase it until 2014.

During Sony's pre-TGS conference, it was revealed that the PS4 would launch on February 22, 2014 in Japan. They also announced the PS4 First Limited Pack for the region, which features the new system and a digital voucher for the first-party exclusive, Knack. This will retail for 41,979 yen. Another pack that includes the PlayStation Camera will be available as well; this will be priced at 46,179 yen. As for games, Japanese consumers can start pre-ordering PS4 titles as of October 5.

Having grown up in a world where all video games and game systems were made by Japanese developers, this news seems exceedingly odd. But hey, I think we all know that times have changed.

Why is this?! I've always been used to waiting up to a year from content to come from Japan. Is this a sign that the western side of gaming has completely dominated the industry? I know JRPG's have struggled immensely and I have no facts to back such a statement, but it is still quite a shock.

One region offers 10x the amount of customers...and you're shocked?

Yes, but LV, those regions ALWAYS boasted 10x the amount of customers, from the days of Atari.

It's just the fact that the ratio of gamers vs. non-gamers in the countries in question has changed so drastically.

I can see that, because they probably dont have high interest in the games we like that are coming out this year. Therefore Flood Euro, Asia, North and South America. All because they can wait !

There's no competition for Sony in Japan. It makes complete sense.

It may not be so this holiday for Japan. Im sure the Wii U is dead in the West, but the Japanese are die hard fans for Nintendo.

Watch'em get epic multiple colored ps4's day one. A silver one would be something i would love to get, but considering we waited till last year for a colored ps3...

What the what? Why would that be? It's a Japanese freakin console. The only reason I can think of is to avoid having a console out without any interesting games, Japanese devs are always late to the party.

Still, seems like one of the signs and wonders of the apocalypse or something.

wasn't the PS3 launched nearly the same time as the rest of world as well? Granted, the US is now getting the PS4 a few months before Japan but the real change happened post PS2 when the gap closed from a year to something within a season.

Maybe so, but why not just go worldwide again instead of leaving them out this time?

How many PS3 were actually sold in Japan that they would cause supply issues? I doubt PS4 can sell 400k in the three months of delay.

I think a big part of this is the threat of competition. Sony doesn't want to afford launching behind MS in Europe or the US. Japan is a territory MS wouldn't dream about leading with first. So it's best for Sony to mount their offensive in the bigger territories.

I dunno man, if it's just a question of allocating resources Japan isn't exactly a huge area to conquer. It just seems totally strange to hold it back there, they will still have to do all the same stuff only a little bit later and without the advantage of world hype day.

maybe there's not enough Japanese related content ready to make a decent launch line up. After this last gen it seems a lot of the eastern gaming studios are a mess anymore.

Ok. I was annoyed that Europe was getting the PS4 two weeks after the US. However, it's even worse that they aren't releasing the console in their home country first.

Whatever about saying the offensive must be made on western territories I think they should look after their home market first.

I can understand the reasoning. Most of the PS4 games coming out between day one and then are very much Western. I know that that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll do poorly in Japan, but Sony wants a line-up more in-tune with the local audience.

Well, Sony had the lead and this just cost them. This is like the time they arrogantly said the ps3 costs $600...that went well and so will this.

I hope i'm wrong though.

yeah nah japanese people don't like xbox so it wudn't surprise me that they are holding the ps4 back from japan till nxt year. but i wud think it wud have something to do with the games line up too but i sure there are multiple reason for what they are doing and trying to achieve.

but yeah i think we all hope it doesn't come back to bite sony come years end.

happy gaming =)

really not surprised by this at all.
as they have clarified since the announcement, asia is seeing it last simply because that the regional specific games, ie the japanese developers, are a little further behind than their western counterparts.
ie we wont be seeing many japanese games till next year, so releasing the ps4 there this year would be pointless.
knack, KZSF, infamous SS, driveclub, are not going to sell too well in that region and thats about all $ony is offering till the feb asian release.
theres going to be stock shortages for quite some time, so why send what precious little you have to a country which is not going to buy many games, when it could be spent on a country which will?

not to mention theres less competition for $ony in asia.
well, none really.
M$ has long abandoned asia.
ninty, well, there not exactly very popular ATM.
the wiiu has gone over worse than the frigging vita!
plus theres the other side where the two companies are catering to two very different demographics.
simple matter of the fact is, whether $ony release the ps4 in asia in november, or feb, its really going to make zero difference to its sales!
so might as well send what precious little stock there is, to regions where it will make a difference.

All of you are wrong. The reason why the Japan launch date is later than US is a marketing strategy. Most of Asia doesn't celebrate Christmas.
Most of the western cultures do ... Sony knows the best sales will be for Christmas. The February launch in Asia is due to Chinese New Year. The Chinese are huge fans of passing money filled red envelopes to each other during this time, not presents. So again, marketing strategy; wait until after the money is passed around and people will spend it on the new system.
