Next-Gen Hype Levels Rising: Can PS4 And Xbox One Live Up?
As we close in on the new generation of hardware, the hype continues to rise at a rapid rate. That's expected.
On the one hand, it's great for the industry. Gaming really needs this massive shot in the arm because sales have been diving all year. Having two new systems arriving within a week of each other in the middle of the holiday rush is a good thing; it has infused our industry with plenty of healthful excitement. It's fun to be amped up!
However, hype is and will always be a double-edged sword. Sure, we've seen plenty of footage for PS4 and Xbox One games so far, but there's always a chance that some gamers will come away disappointed with the new consoles. And if that happens, and if there are enough bitter gamers out there, the headlines will begin to reflect that bitterness. You'll start seeing articles about how the new consoles aren't all they were cracked up to be, despite the fact that the current generation limped to the finish line. "Limped" is the correct term, by the way.
It's bad enough when one new piece of hardware drops amid a flurry of hype and expectation. But when two launch at almost the exact same time, the hype will go through the roof. Are you staying grounded? Are you being conservative with your expectations? Or are you really anticipating the second coming of interactive entertainment in November?
