Next-Gen Hype Levels Rising: Can PS4 And Xbox One Live Up?

As we close in on the new generation of hardware, the hype continues to rise at a rapid rate. That's expected.

On the one hand, it's great for the industry. Gaming really needs this massive shot in the arm because sales have been diving all year. Having two new systems arriving within a week of each other in the middle of the holiday rush is a good thing; it has infused our industry with plenty of healthful excitement. It's fun to be amped up!

However, hype is and will always be a double-edged sword. Sure, we've seen plenty of footage for PS4 and Xbox One games so far, but there's always a chance that some gamers will come away disappointed with the new consoles. And if that happens, and if there are enough bitter gamers out there, the headlines will begin to reflect that bitterness. You'll start seeing articles about how the new consoles aren't all they were cracked up to be, despite the fact that the current generation limped to the finish line. "Limped" is the correct term, by the way.

It's bad enough when one new piece of hardware drops amid a flurry of hype and expectation. But when two launch at almost the exact same time, the hype will go through the roof. Are you staying grounded? Are you being conservative with your expectations? Or are you really anticipating the second coming of interactive entertainment in November?

Hunkering down for the long haul. I think after Christmas there will be a hangover when people realize that all the cross gen games like Watch Dogs, Cod, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed 17 are shinier versions of gameplay that is now firmly in the past while the new exclusives aren't much better.

Sounds cynical I know but I'm still very excited for the new tech and hopeful for what Sony will bring to the table as time goes on. It's just gonna take some time and anybody who isn't enamored of online multiplayer is going to have some time to kill. Hopefully inFamous 2 will provide a great stopover point early next year.

Guess that's why we have backlogs.

yes, after the honeymooning of the new console wears off, the disillusioned will realize they're actually waiting for the big games, and not the cross-gen, semi-better-than-now games. The hunger cycle starts all over again.

As a PC gamer I've always been realistic about a new generation of consoles. I'll never forget the hype surrounding the PS2 demos shown with Ridge Racer. I may be showing my age but I'm most looking forward to the PS4's media capabilities. My PS3s are used daily in the house for this function.

Got to admit I feel sort of naked. I've always gone into every new generation dreaming of what the newest Final Fantasy would be like. Now I'm alone and afraid on that front.

I've seen a huge increase in detail on ps4 games, and screen tearing on the xbox one games. Well, besides Halo. Im kind of hoping to see more of Final Fantasy. So long as Nomura doesn't allow 15 to be dragged down in any shape or form, i'll probably be good for the entire gen. I'm still playing FF from ps1 days, im hoping to get a final fantasy that can withstand the changes in generation of gaming. Also, seriously, why so much screen tearing? That Forza demo drove me crazy with all of its screen tearing. Halo did look super awesome though. If they weren't a sci-fy CoD, and i didn't have to pay Microsoft anything, I'd definitely give it a try.

Going to Xbox One will drag it down somewhere, be sure of it.

While I do like Halo I remember being let down that the 'mounting to be epic and cool' game trailer ended up ONLY being another Halo ;)

The next-gen systems will satiate most users, but there will still be some moaning about some banality or other. That being said, I'm waiting for that evolutionary leap in gameplay...

And I'd argue that "limped" is precisely the wrong word to use. From a sales perspective, you've got it right, but what about the games? A couple of truly great JRPGs in NnK and Tales of Xillia after a generation of disappointment; the fantastic Tomb Raider and genuine Game of the Generation contenders in Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, not to mention that GTA V, Gran Turismo 6 and Beyond are still incoming. We don't play for the sales, we play for the games and that is hardly limping to the finish line, especially when there are like... three next-gen exclusive games that are actually looking good.

nope.
simple matter of the fact is we have been waiting SEVEN freaking years for these systems, by far the longest weve ever waited for new systems, and there no where near the technological leap you would expect.
sheere time its taken for them to release, what they release to, and also how there going to progress.
console games have always seen steady spacious increases in quality due to their alien architecture.
now there keeping it simple with x86 were not going to see that trend anymore.
oh, plus the fact that everyones expecting the knight UE4 tech demo, and $Es luminous tech demo.
well, those were running on high end PCs so sorry your not going to be seeing that.
anyone notice the same knight demo showed off at the ps4 reveal back in feb lacked allot of the texture detail and particle effects?
yup, developers really shot themselves in the foot with that one.
started showing off tech demos too early claiming this is what next gens going to offer, and now only PCs going to be capable of that.

All i have to say is if games look as good as TLOU or better then i'll be satisfied. I don't expect gameplay to change at all. Really... who would. You still have the same ol' controller and same fundamentals of gaming whether it be a shooter or rpg. If people are expecting the gameplay to change drastically then yes they'll be disappointed. I'm hyped as all hell and i don't see myself getting disappointed because in all honesty, i just love gaming. Past, present and future gens...

Not really sure what people are expecting out of next gen but I look forward to great stories and awesome mp games, just like with the ps3. LOL. Tis going to be awesome!!!

I am expecting gmaeplay changes, and I'm already seeing them in late gen games like TLOU. Most of them are actually just shifts back to old styles too, which I like. I hope it's a mix of the old and the new in the next gen, less gaming for dummies and more gaming with common sense.

Example: A human being is going to feel more alone and lost without a full map, radar, and objective indicator.
