Shadow Fall Multiplayer: No XP, Spotlight System Introduced

In most games, especially shooters, you earn experience to progress online.

But that won't be the case in the PlayStation 4 exclusive launch title, Killzone: Shadow Fall. In a new blog post, Guerrilla community editor Victor Zuylen explained some of the intriguing alterations we'll see in the game's multiplayer.

First up is the fact that there will be no EXP advancement. Instead, your character will advance by completing a series of challenges. There will be over 1,500 to accept and conquer and they will vary widely in difficulty; everything from "destroy one turret" to "kill one enemy player with a laser tripmine while they are carrying a beacon." Timing is kinda essential in that latter challenge. With each challenge completed, one point will be added to a player's rank.

There's also a new Spotlight System, which will boast the top three players from the winning side of a multiplayer match, and the top player from the losing side. One of the winning players will have a certain amount of time to perform a crowd-pleasing Spotlight move on the losing player, who has the chance to perform a swift counterattack if the aggressor fails. Don't choke under the pressure of public scrutiny!

Lastly, Zuylen made it plain that the game's weaponry is based on skill; there will be no auto-aiming and all firearms have at least some recoil. Each weapon can support two attachments as well, so those decisions will be significant. Oh, and no jetpacks, unfortunately. Well, maybe it's "fortunately" for some fans of the franchise.

This is fine but what this does is limit unlocking items if items are unlocked through advancement/rank. What I mean is some people may struggle or rather just never complete challenges thus not ranking up. CoD and most mp games had found this balance of giving more xp by completing challenges but still awarding players for playing the game.

In all honesty trying to complete challenges to advance can be a distraction to the gameplay. You can't just complete challenges like the trip mine one listed above in mp whenever you please because the gameplay changes constantly. It would be a matter of happenstance rather than skill. Because that player carrying the beacon just happened to run into your trap but could easily change course before running into it.

Not a huge fan of this idea but I typically try to conplete challenges in mp games anyways so this wont be a big deal. However if it limits what players can unlock it wont be successful. Eventually frustration of not being able to complete a challenge will prevail.

Otherwise everything else sound fantastic and Ive always been a firm believer that the top player from the losing team should be recognized in some fashion.

I think this just makes the game more challenging, which is good. It's also something new, at least compared to the same old formula of recent FPSs. I'm not really interested though; I'll be mostly playing the campaign. The spotlight thing, however, sounds kind of cool.

I would suggest they are going for a whole different multiplayer feel than CoD, instead of logging in to do whatever you want you are joining an army with objectives.

For me it makes a lot of sense. in most shooters you can be a crappy player and still level up. Completing challenges requires skill, so the whole experience should be more rewarding. Leveling up will mean something

YES No auto-aim! R*, take notes. lol I can't stand being the only living person to play games like RDR and not use auto-aim. Anyway, this sounds extremely interesting. I like it. Its that thing gaming needs "New"

I kind of like auto aim in FPS since my reflexes are shot, but not in TPS.

Bud, you aren't the only one. I speak out against auto aim VERY often.

Sounds like a great idea. Say, does anybody know if anyone plays Resistance 2 online co-op anymore?

Thats one of the few I liked, that's why multiplayer is such a throwaway investment of my time. The good ones just empty out anyway. I liked the MP in White Knight and Two Worlds II as well but good luck finding people to play with. Waste of money.

I threw R2 in about 2 months ago. You can still find coop parties. Still the best coop mp I've played personally

It doesn't look that hard to earn points though. Sure some challenges may be hard but it looks like you can get paints for various types of kills.

Here is a Shadow Fall multiplier game play video if anyone is interested.
