GameStop: One Next-Gen Console In 2013, Another In 2014

It seems the Nintendo Wii U will be hitting store shelves this fall, but when will the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft arrive?

That really is the $64,000 question these days. Last week, we told you we had heard from a few GameStop employees that one or both next-gen systems will release in 2013. We also told you to take that with a grain of salt but now, GameStop CEO Paul Raines has told Polygon that in fact, one of those next-gen machines is set for next year.

"This week, I'm getting a lot of rumors that are very interesting about 2013. We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumors change every week, but we're hearing more about next year."

Any bets that the new Xbox is 2013 and the next PlayStation is 2014? That seems most logical, in that Microsoft is definitely in need of new hardware, while the PS3 clearly has some capability left in the tank (The Last Of Us and Beyond: Two Souls are statement enough). Either way, it appears one next-gen console will be here next year, so get ready.

Damn, I really hope it's not the PS4 that releases in 2014. If they do release in that year, they will take another back seat in sales just like Sony did with the PS3. They have to play this one smart.

That's probably a reasonable assumption, though with how little we know about Wii U I wouldn't be surprised if it got pushed to 2013.

I'm sure both Sony and MS are playing it smart and keeping each other guessing...do they rush it out or wait? I know if I was one of the big two I'd be ignoring that has been Nintendo (it makes me sad to say that) and focusing on keeping the other one on their toes.
I hope we see them both next year actually, but a years delay on either probably won't hurt sales.
I'm sticking with Playstation as long as they remain the reliable and most affordable option with the games I really want.

Why do we care about the rumors GS gets? Are they really more reliable than what I read elsewhere? Probably not.

If the PS4 has backward compatibility, I'd be considering getting the PS4 in 2013. Just because the PS3 still has momentum in the games, doesn't rule out a PS4 release, especially if it's backward compatibility and maybe even an option to extra anti-alias PS3 games.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure there will be plenty that will stick with the PS3s for a bit, especially knowing how unreliable many of the PS3s was at launch.

i wouldent be surprised if it was the other way around, if we were to see the xbox after the playstation.
$ony has said countless times they wont be late to the party this time, and $ony have commented plenty on ps4.
M$ though wont say a word about their next gen system!
rumors going around that there having allot of reliability issues with it too, so that would delay it.
in fact today there was a source saying exactly that, its been pushed back from its originally planed release.
will have to wait and see, but i really honestly would not be surprised if this time the tables are turned.
$ony seems plenty interested in next gen, where as M$ quite the opposite!

MS is more interested in cross pollinating it's new Windows 8 tablet devices. They need more users of those things and Windows 8 in the non-business world. I wouldn't be shocked if they focused on tablets and tablet gaming for a while, possibly even going down the route of leaving the console world for their own proprietary Win8 tablet world.

nah, i doubt it there making far too much money off it!
plus kinect, they did not spend millions in R&D just to release the thing for 2 years than say goodbye and not release it anymore, or build a successor.
not to mention all the leaked papers, prototypes and such.
theres no way M$ is dropping out of the console market just yet!

its interesting to see though the reactions of windows 8 from developers.
i havent had a chance to play around with it yet unfortunately but its looking good.
i especially cant wait for a unified OS, IE windows 8 on my laptop, desktop, ipad, and next xbox.

theres allot of rumours going around that samsung and google are not exactly in the best of terms ATM, especially because of the lawsuits from apple google is trying to distance themselves so apparently samsung is in communication with M$ to go phone 8 exclusive.
new HTC mobiles announced in a few days time are suppose to be phone 8 as well.
im starting to wonder if the days of androids dominance, and google itself are numbered.
i hope so, because 1 thing is for sure I HATE ANDROID!!!!!!!!!!!!
really, really, really hope the iphone 5 announced next wednesday is 100% totally different to the 4!
if not, if the leaked videos are real im going to be so disappointed!
i left apple and bought a s3 simply because i was bored with the look of the phone and OS, but i really want to go back because only now have i realized how much better it is!
but i cant, i just cant if its going to look the same as it has!
apple is turning into Porsche, whats the point of releasing a new product if it looks the same as the last?

I wouldn't be suprised if M$ pulls out all together for the next gen it's been rumoured that they might. Either way i'm happy with my ps3 and will always be a sony fan. For the WiiU i can see it being pushed back but we'll see nintendo needs something to get people excited for this console lets say I loved my Wii now it just sits an collects dust and is worth nothing and no one has no interest in purchasing it from me eveyone want a Ps3 or xbox so nintendo needs to stop being lazy and get amazing games i have more games and have more fun on my 3DS then my Wii.

MS wouldn't pull out without releasing another broken console and some rehashed games that totally screws over the public in favor of a cash grab. Then they would bail.

Wii U is still a mystery to me. Nintendo seem very tight lipped about it's specs, why?

Anyway, if the PS4 arrives in 2014, that is fine by me...

The world is ending December 21st so what does it matter?...

I still say it's a bit too soon for either Sony or micro&soft to be kicking a new console out the door... I still ain't gonna hold me breath on all these rumors...

Interesting, since Sony and Microsoft both said prior to E3 they have no plans to release new systems just yet. I'd think 2013 for WiiU(yes, late 2012, close enough) 2014 for XBox 720 (Please pick a better name) and 2015 for PS4.

Gamestop isn't what I'd consider a solid source of info. But if any console is going to be out in 2014 it'd probably be the PS4 for a Spring release.
