Deep Down Confirmed As Free-To-Play

Love it or hate it, you're going to be seeing a lot more of it in the next generation.

We've heard that Capcom's PlayStation 4 exclusive title, Deep Down, would be an "online RPG." We're still a little hazy on the details, but the publisher did confirm during the Tokyo Game Show that it will also adopt the popular free-to-play model.

This was confirmed by Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida on Twitter, and he added that the game will enter an open beta phase "near the launch of the PS4 in Japan." So, that would mean Japanese players will get a shot at Deep Down some time around February of 2014; no word on whether or not Western gamers will get it. Featuring Capcom's new Panta Rhei engine, Deep Down will boast procedurally generated dungeons and the setting is New York circa 2094. And yet, it still looks a lot like Dark Souls...

What's your take on this being free-to-play? Me, my interest almost fell off the map when I heard it was an "online RPG;" now, my interest is off the map. But really, that's probably just me.

Free to play can be done right but only a handful of games on the PC are doing it right.

Most of these games if you were to buy all the content would costs hundreds of dollars and to be frank a lot of the games are not worth that price.

Free to play games I always give them a try because they are free but I'm always looking at how they are trying to monetize them. Are they making money off of purely cosmetic things? Is there some sort of playing restriction?

For example will Deep down cost you some sort of currency to go into the dungeons and that currency regenerates every 24 hours but you can buy more with real money?

A Pc game called spiral knights used this method and it was a great game but that METHOD was terrible. It basically wanted you to pay I kid you not 20 bucks a week to play for something like 4 hours a day I think? Maybe less I can't remember. Of course you could collect money in game and trade it for the stuff you bought with money so in theory you didn't have to pay and could keep playing but that market was player run. So eventually it became impossible.

They recently removed that system because the community basically left.

Anyway I will try this game out if it comes to the west but I will be watching to see how they try to make money from the players. Whats funny is if I find the monetizing method ethical I usually give them the amount of money I feel the game is worth.

If its trying to nickel and dime you at every turn well, there are plenty more games to play so why waste your time and money?

My issue with free to play is that they are rarely done well, and even the good ones towards end-game often turn into pay-to-win.

The free-to-play model is outrageous for a console game. Sure it lets more players play, but the fact is you still need to buy things to get the full scope of the game. Id much prefer a subscription but even then id be against it.

I think DC universe had the right idea. Different tiers and you let the player decide. I dont remember prices or what was included in each tier but basically the player could choose free-to-play and have the minimum experience or you could pay the top subscription fee and have the maximum experience. Or you could fall to tiers inbetween. This is a far better model because it lets players play how they want qhile still coming back. Where the free-to-play model encourages people to purchase certain things individually most of the time.

Personally im against all of this pay to play crap. I already paid when I bought the product. UUnfortunately I understand from a business standpoint, the idea of it.

I do play a couple of F2P games, so this isn't exactly bad news, just troubling. It's been done right very few times. Of course, the very advantage of the model is we can check to see if it's being done right without wasting any money.

hmm lets take a look for 1 minute this isn't capcoms first MMO Capcom has made a monster hunter MMO

you guys are bashing a game that is a "New IP" just because its a F2P online RPG
lets take our blindfolds off for a minute and look at capcoms RPGS

Breath of fire series
Monster hunter series
Dragons Dogma
all of these are good games except breath of fire V
now honestly whats wrong with expanding your fanbase with a F2P online RPG

ok now to address the F2P MMO Market comments yes i understand 80% of F2P MMOS end up turning out to be something we MMO players call P2W Pay 2 win

now lets look at a couple F2P MMOS ive played that aren't really P2W

Dynasty warriors online Developer Koei NA publisher Aeria games the cash shop lets u buy stuff for more inventory but you can only use 1 weapon a battle 1 set of gear a battle meaning if you payed to hold 20 sets of gear your still fighting a person on equal grounds because you cant use everything

Lunia Korean MORPG developer Alm games the cash shop no longer is truly a cash shop they give you cash shop points every 2 weeks just for logging in
and you no longer can buy points with real money

next we have PSO2 phantasy star online 2 developer Sega only JP and asia atm

which the only real thing you could call P2W is premium which gives you full access to everything its basically a monthly sub which before i explain premium i should explain the fun scratch which everyone has access to for free

the fun scratch works like this everyday just for logging in you get fun points which are used for the fun scratch which has various items and its like a lottery
now it has extra hair styles items for enhancing weapons accessories
furniture for your room 3 day my room tickets and 3 day my shop tickets

now to explain my room its just a room you decorate no real purpose
my shop lets you sell items to other players everyone has access to buying from other players my shop tickets lets you sell to other players

now back to premium you get my room for 30 days my shop for 30 days and double fun points for 30 days for approximately 15 US dollars a month

the other stuff you can buy extra skill trees which you can only have 1 equipped at a time and you cant switch in a quest

extra mags yet again you can only have 1 equipped at a time so no advantage their

costume scratch which is a lottery and everybody sells the costumes through the auction house which anybody can buy note costume are purely for looks give no bonuses so no advantage their

accessory/ hairstyle scratch these are tickets that can be sold to anybody and give no bonuses so no advantage their its just extra customization for LOOKS only

ok ok i know im boring you with this wall of text that wont be read so ill stop here

Honestly I wasn't going to go deep down, on Deep Down... But free-to-play is f2p. I wasn't going to pay to get Deep Down, but since it is free, I may reconsider getting Deep Down. DC was F2P and I played that and enjoyed it outside of its many glitches. People even paid me to keep playing it because I'm that useful. They bought the first five expansions, several months of Legendary, and enough money to get a PS2 classic, three Psone Classics, and a couple hundred extra bucks I gave away to a friend.

Now, I don't expect things to happen like that this time around, but free to play is always nice when you have time to kill, and no idea how you want to kill it.

Very, very few F2P games are worth playing. I haven't really seen anything about this title will make me want to check it out, so it's a pass for me.

as soon as they said free to play i was like urg i have come to dispize it because it is becoming so common it wasn't so bad when it was like a niche ish thing but now it 's a pain in the ass being brutally honest.
it was like this guys was saying pay for the game straight up then never again.
but i guess it's just that most of the games out there like this are over priced in game items just like DLC it just costs too much.

rant over

happy gaming =)

Will I get it? Sure it's free. The question is whether or not I'll bite with the micro-transaction stuff. Chances are, I won't.

F2P and great story/single player experience, does not go together. F2P and raping our wallet for us to enjoy the game, does.

Don't mind F2P games at all, when they are done right. Actually I'm playing DotA 2 all the time and I'm having a blast. Didn't cost me a penny.
