Sony Offers PS4 Info: Power Consumption, Noise Level, More

Think you know everything there is to know about the PlayStation 4? Well, maybe not.

SCEJ and Asia Senior Vice President and Director of Business Unit 1, Masayasu Ito, gave an interview to Japanese publication AV Watch (as cited by DualShockers), and he offered some fresh technical information for Sony's new gaming hardware.

After confirming that being online will help you get the most out of your system (which we already knew), Ito added a few intriguing details. Here are some of the highlights:

"The secondary chip for ultra-low power operation will mostly activate at night from 1 to 4 AM and download any required update automatically. It will also activate when software is purchased through external means like the PlayStation App."

"Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played."

"The noise level of the console during operation is generally much lower than it was on the PS3."

"The PS4′s cooling fan has a low noise level and stepless speed control (meaning that it will increase its speed to match heat smoothly and not in sudden steps like the one on the PS3)."

"The Audio/Video performance (for movies and music) of the PS4 will target PS3 levels at launch, but will be improved through updates, for instance with the addition of 4K, as Sony is also an Audio/Video company."

Is this about what you expected? Or are you at all surprised by any of these new details? I want the thing to be quiet...

"Your future gaming console will come alive between the hours of 1 and 4 AM to stay up to date with what's going on."

If you had said this to me back in like 1987 while I was playing NES (terrified I would mess up the saving procedure for Zelda) I'd never believe ya.

If the PS4 by some chance is able to play .MKV files, that'd be awesome haha

Doubt they'd implement it, even though it's a simple thing. They know where a majority of MKV's come from. Either way if you have you ps3/ps4 connected to your pc via router or so then it can stream mkv without additional needs.

Thing is, automatic software downloads will probably be an entire system thing, meaning any games you have will be updated as well as the systems firmware.

I learnt from recent PS3 corrupted firmware updates that automatic updates is sometimes a bad thing :/ I don't want my PS4 to brick itself while I am sleeping.

Damn straight... I am still pissed about Firmware update 3.21 and the removal of Other OS. There are also the risks of a bad firmware escaping into the wild... Auto updates risk bricking systems or screwing users. I may very well unplug my ethernet when not playing!

I think that all of these features were to be expected of a next gen console. I like that the fan adjusts its speeds automatically to the level of heat rather than waiting for the system to get super hot and then blast the fan.

I feel like the majority of gamers shouldn't worry about how loud a fan was (up to a point) considering the audio from the TV will easily drown this out.

Hmm, I never noticed the fan being that loud on my 60GB. Can't test it now though, sadly. After years of faithful service, it finally went out. I repaired it a couple of times, but it didn't last very long.

If there is one thing we should know by now, it's that all fans will at some point in time start to make noise. It's the fate of anything mechanical.
I like the stepless speed control though.

"Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played." - well, *duh* :D

really hope the audio quality will be greatly stepped up in ps4 games.
its such a jarring and disappointing experience watching movies than playing ps3 games, especially sound wise, its like playing NES games after playing PC games!
one minute your rushing to the door staring at the skies swearing a tank just rammed your door in and a jet flew over your house, and the next, well, it sounds like all thats happening, but 200KMs away.

wish $ony would bring us a half decent headset too, especially after the really good MDR headsets they offer for home theater use i really expected a metric sh*t ton more from the pulse headset!
to call that disappointing would be understatement of the millennium!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! 1-4 am, can't we choose when to have it update like with the ps3? I do most of my gaming during those hours, granted this thing will download it all in the background, but I still want the option to choose when it does system updates and the like.
