Which Developer Will Impress You Most In The New Generation?

As the new generation looms ever closer, one wonders: Which developer do you expect will impress you most during the PS4/Xbox One era?

There are the usual suspects, of course, but what specific reasons to you have for selecting say, Naughty Dog, or Rockstar, or Irrational Games, or Kojima Productions?

I almost want to say Quantic Dream because they're going to emerge from this generation with two pretty amazing games (Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls). They're both highly progressive in terms of interactive storytelling and entertainment and remember, they're two brand new IPs that have no connection to each other. Quantic boss David Cage is one of my favorite people in the industry, as he clearly understands that if we're to take the next step, we have to rise above the concept that every successful game needs to have guns.

Then again, Rockstar always excels in the open-world aspect of gaming; hell, they're pioneers in that field. And as the industry is clearly heading towards a more open, sandbox, freedom-oriented format, Rockstar is the developer perhaps best positioned to take advantage. Looking at GTAV, can you even imagine what they could do with the new hardware? I mean...holy crap. But at the end of the day, I think I might have to go with Naughty Dog, simply because they also produced two brand new IPs this generation, and both are considered several of the very best video games ever made. Uncharted and The Last Of Us speaks to a ridiculously deep talent pool at that studio, and it'll be really interesting to see what they can do with the PS4. Expect them to push and innovate yet again.

What's your pick?

I think Naughty Dog, given what they've done for the PS3, is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Beyond that... I'd really like tri-Ace to get back in the game and blow us all away. Even if it isn't a continuation of Star Ocean or Valkyrie Profile.Resonance of Fate - regardless of your feelings toward it - was proof that tri-Ace does not NEED S-E to make a solid game.

I'd love to see Tri-Ace return in some capacity, maybe collab with Level-5.

Its Naughty Dog. They push the boundary farther than any otuer developer. They put more into trying to get things right on a console thats been known for being hard to develop on. Think what they can do with something easy to grasp. The thought is limitless, just like their talent.

With tjat said im anxious to see what all the developers can do.

I think KojiPro is gonna go down in quality, Rockstar, Naughty Dog, and Irrational are all so good it's almost impossible for them to surprise anyone with top quality games.

I think Blizzard will be making a splash next gen for the home consoles.

I'll take the unlikely pick and say Ready At Dawn beginning with The Order: 1886.

As a top portable developer I think they have something to prove by going AAA with the PS4 tech so they will be highly ambitious and have the backing of Sony to fulfill an alternate history vision that I think I will connect with (as I have with Bioshock, Dishonored, Fallout, etc).

Also as cool as sandbox games can be they are more "fun" than actually "impressive" to me. I find a really well done linear experience to be the most impressive because it is highly focused and everything from the mechanics to the visuals to the story reflects that.

Ready At Dawn is primed to do what Crystal Dynamics did and jump from solid developer to AAA powerhouse.

I think money really limits the potential of a game/developer. A million seller vs a multimillion seller is a huge difference. Naughty Dog does not have any constraints to explore their creativity.

Sony would never allow Naughty Dog to take chances like Last of Us without the huge success of Uncharted.

If Ready At Dawn sells 1 million, the sequel will probably need to sell 2 million provide them with enough budget for us to see a huge difference in game size/length/quality etc.

I'm going to have to go with Bethesda. I think open world style games have the most to gain from the hardware we're getting. Ever since hard drives and large pools of RAM came console side open world style experiences have really exploded over the last 10 years. I think the future is there with these dynamic open worlds for a lot of the hardcore single player market.

Naughty Dog is a given. Sucker Punch improved the most in my opinion. Infamous 1 has a good idea, but the design was pretty repetitive, buildings and decorations etc. THeir interview even said that they had to simplify the game to have hexagon maps & streets.

Infamous 2 was a huge jump, as infamous 2nd son will also. So im definitely excited about their games.

Just one? C'est impossible!

Naughty Dog absolutely must be mentioned. One thing I noticed with TLoU is that it felt more open than Uncharted, and I hope that their next game follows that trend (but doesn't delve into open-world).
thatgamecompany - Jenova Chen is amazingly good at concepts. Take that to the next generation, greatness will ensue.
Ninja Theory - Every current-gen game has seen improvements over the former. If that trend continues, they should be counted by most among the top tier of developers by their second next-gen game.
And I'm hoping that Insomniac sees a return to form.

Surprised no one has brought up Sony Santa Monica. I believe with what they did with the PS3 with God of War 3,which I still feel is the graphics king of this gen. I expect nothing but great things from them whether they decide to stay with God of War or go in a different direction. Another couple devs I expect a lot from and I expect them show up big is MercurySteam and Rocksteady. I love the Arkham series and feel that Lords of Shadow was mostly overlooked as it was a great hack n slash and am really looking forward to LoS 2. Both developers will undoubtedly come up with great games. Can't wait for next gen to start.

The usual suspects BUT my hope is... this is tenuous... my hope is Ready at Dawn with their game "The Order: 1888". What little has been shown and the revealed of the storyline, I have hopes that this game will be an experience.

Naughty Dog I think is a given. The have aced storytelling and know how build worlds. I am sure they will continue to grow on that. My hope for them is they create better AI interaction both environment and character. With the PS4 they should be able to leap over that hurdle. Same goes for all the devs.

AND still hoping for Team Ico. Although that has dwindle considerably over the last few years.

Overall I think most of the top players in game dev will try to impress the gamer. I think its a lot of pressure now with all their talk of limitations with the current systems. Graphics won't cut it for me personally. Since I will not be on board probably for a year or so, this is going to be interesting to watch. And perhaps with a little jealously as well.

Here's hoping and keep playing! Cheers!
