Single-Player Data Won't Transfer Over For "Upgrade" Titles

Well, of course not. Who the heck cares about single-player, anyway? Nobody, right?

Some of the fall's biggest titles can eventually be upgraded if you so choose. Basically, if you buy a current-generation copy of a game like Call of Duty: Ghosts, you can later upgrade to the next-gen version for only $10. Publishers like Activision, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are on board, but these upgrade deals are only available for a limited time (and they only pertain to digital copies).

There's another catch, too, as various representatives of the aforementioned companies confirmed with Kotaku: Single-player progress for Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will not carry over to the PS4 iteration when you upgrade. However, all multiplayer progress and previously purchased downloadable content will. Watch Dogs is another title on the list, but Ubisoft didn't say whether or not the campaign save progress would transfer over.

As far as I'm concerned, that's even less incentive to do this. Why not just wait a bit? Patience is a virtue.

Yeah I plan on waiting for any game that is releasing pre-ps4, but will be available on ps4 later. I'm looking forward to the new Lego Marvel game on ps4, but I'm not going to buy it twice or pay upgrade fee when I can just wait until christmas and get it on ps4 probly uber cheap with some amazon game deal.

I'm still hoping GTA:V will come out for PS4/PC soon after launch. But there's really no way to know right now. Maybe I should just go for it on PS3. Although, if it came out later for PS4 and I couldn't transfer my save data, that would suck. Even more so if they didn't offer an upgrade deal as mentioned in the article. Who wants to pay full price twice for the same game?

A PC version is pretty much guaranteed as every one of them has gone to PC. There's coding for a PC version that has already been revealed as well. They also put out a want ad for a graphics programmer to "help bring our latest titles to the PC platform." Since they only put out a game every few years, what other "latest" title could they mean?

I guess I should have worded that differently. I hope they come out with a PC version sooner rather than later. If they release a PS4/Xone version soon after the consoles launch, it would be too easy to go ahead and release the PC version. They create the games using PCs, and the PS4/Xone hardware is (finally) more PC-like, so it seems like a no-brainer to me. More sales for Rockstar.

But I have a feeling that wouldn't happen. I can dream though, right?

This shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone once you think about it. Single player progress is only stored locally on the machine (no cloud service on the ps3), while online progress is stored centrally on the game servers.

That's the true beauty of cloud storage: The accessibility of your saves across machines and platforms.

I'm still amazed by the experience of installing Half Life 2 again last spring, starting the game and find all my savegames from many years ago listed. Not only was it a new PC but a totally different operating system (Linux) - it was all there, fed to the game via the Steam cloud.
Awesome.

PS3 has cloud saves via PSN+

I think because of the change in architecture it may be unable to read those saved files. but what the hell do i know lol

Are *all* save-files stored on the cloud with plus? Or only those who support this feature?
Can you continue on a saved game from whatever other PS3 if you are a plus member?

Cause if so then I really do not see why the PS4 can't read those data too. It's not related to file system.

Don't quote me on this

If i'm not mistaken there is an automatic which automatically uploads your saves to the cloud. As well as a manual feature.

You should be able to since you can sign in to your PSN account and download/access your save files.

True but logically speaking if all things made since in this world what you're saying would work flawlessly unfortunately this isn't that perfect world and companies don't work in "it makes perfect sense" fashion. Therefore there may have to be some sort of internal work done in order for the games to recognize the saved data. I agree with you though buddy but like i said what the hell do i know lol. I would love to try that out and let you know except when i adopt the new hardware i want physical copies not downloaded versions so I will just wait it out till November 15th. I am not much of a COD fan maybe ill get that one and test it out for ya i don't care much about it

Any game save can be saved to the cloud through PSN+, not just those that support it, as everything supports it. You can't save something to the cloud, download it to a different PS3, then use it on someone else's profile though if the save is locked to one account. Learned that when my brother wanted to use my Skyrim save. He could however play on my account with my save data. He uses my save data on just about all my games spanning from games like Super Stardust HD, to GTAV.

Then I have no rational explanation as to why you can't pick up on the PS4 where you left on the PS3.

It must be a design issue then, in one way or another. But it really does not make much sense cause the data on file should be the same for the games, and the underlying file system should definitely not matter.

I already have BF4 pre-ordered on PS3. I also plan to upgrade to the PS4 version when the PS4 arrives.

I have no issue playing the single player campaign over again, so I can compare the upgraded graphics and framerate.

Another example of Sony not respecting the user's data... I will not be buying an Xbone, and I'm excited for the PS4, but that doesn't mean i have to like Sony...

How Sony and Microsoft handle user data is really evident of the origins and primary focus of each company:

Microsoft, being primarily a software company, recognizes that the data is the important aspect, and openly allows you the easy ability to move your data, with everything from data transfer cables, to memory cards or thumb drives, to the ability to pop your drive off of one machine and drop it into another. While Microsoft often ticks me off, this I will always respect.

Sony, on the other hand, has always been a hardware company. They are notorious for locking down data, and trying to tie it to the hardware. You can't pull the hard drive from a failed PS3 and install it into a good PS3. It will simply ask you to format it. Sony offers no data protection or recovery when your hardware is serviced. They expect you to pay of a cloud service, there THEY hold onto your data, or you are expected to make your OWN backups... WHEN they leave the files unlocked. I have nothing but disdain for Sony's handling of data.

Having save files locked down prevents people from being able to take the save file, modify it, then reload it back with extra health, abilities, God mode, etc.

It also prevents possible exploits into the system itself.

These are just safety measures. Sony isn't locking down the save files just to piss you off. There is reason behind it.

So, we're to pay 60 for the game on Ps3, 10 more for the game on PS4, and not get our current game save transefered? So, we spend 70 to play and then start from scratch. Either wait for PS4, or don't play the PS4 version. Too stupid to do it their way.

MEGATON! Biggest thing evah!
Pretty great, but not mind-blowing.
Something decent but that's it.
A waste of hype.
