Guerrilla On Their New IP: Don't Expect Another Killzone

Guerrilla Games has proven itself several times over with the esteemed Killzone franchise, but they want to try something new.

We've heard that the talented developer has begun work on an all-new IP, and lead designer Eric Boltjes told Eurogamer that we shouldn't be expecting another shooter. Well, that's what he implied, at least:

"As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don't want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh."

The studio hasn't released a non-Killzone title since the team's first game, Shellshock: Nam '67 back in 2004. They really only know shooters (at least so far), so maybe when they say "very different," they mean a differently themed FPS. Still, I'd like to think they want to spread their wings a bit and try something really new. For the time being, we'll assume this new project will be another PlayStation 4 exclusive and if so, it should be something to look forward to for new PS4 owners.

Guerrilla's confirmed PS4 launch title, Killzone: Shadow Fall, will be on store shelves on November 15.

I still have yet to see anything from this, single player wise, that doesn't look like familiar-to-the-genre territory. Having KZ mixed with Crysis ain't gonna cut it if it really wants to stand apart as something more than another shooter with a new shinier coat of paint. I really think the majority of critics aren't going to play nice with this one if it ends up being just that.

EDIT: On the bright side it'll be between this game and Ryse to show who flexes their tech muscle strongest.

The character models in Ryse just got a big old downgrade in poly count.

I would love them to do something like an loot driven action RPG "dungeon crawler" or a really deep beat em up game like dragons crown.

It would be awesome to see them try at a genre that is polar opposite to shooters.

yah, they need to get away from doing this 'last gen' heavy genre. Between CoD, BF, Crysis, Borderlands, and Destiny we're pretty well covered, especially with some hitting annually. This feels more the case for those owning both leading platforms. I have no problem with Sony continuing the KZ franchise but place GG on something else.

Though, I can't say I'm much for looting personally. But I know there's a good many who like it, especially them PC folk.

Yeah. I guess the loot isn't the most important aspect. I just want them to do something completely different.

A Zelda or Darksiders style game would be awesome to see them do too :)

Personally, to qualify as completely different and NEW, it would have to involve no guns, otherwise, it would be within their element, in a way. Of course, it's probably hard nowadays to make something that doesn't involve guns, but that's the challenge I dare these guys to tackle.

I'd like to see them attempt something in the first person RPG realm, or even a third person action game, but we will probably get another FPS.

I'd love something like that. We don't have enough quality FP RPGs (IMO). Hell, Fallout doesn't have any strong competition. Give it some. I love Fallout, and so do millions of gamers. We'd love more, too, especially considering that Bethesda Softworks takes its time (and far too many years for this eager gamer!) developing new iterations.

hell yeah, I know the persistent and huge worlds of Fallout are something of a specialty (that's why they have bugs) but I'd like to see a good team like GG at least enter that realm. There's still tons of room for innovation there.

I'm still impressed by Killzone. I can't always explain why, but its top-notch visuals with actual voice acted scenes and tough opponents have always made for quality games, and I'll continue to buy 'em.

However, I'd like to see something other than a shooter. Far too many talented devs seem locked down in shooters. Yes, that's where the money is but not my interest. Or if they're going to do a shooter, make it story based, with 20+ hours of intense and emotional narrative and no online multiplayer. Be bold enough to be different!

I know more than a few people are gonna say "Do an RPG do an RPG." I'll probably get crucified for this, but I'm not an RPG fan at all. I've got my reasons which I may or may not explain one day on here. Anyway what I feel we don't have enough of are hack and slash and beat em up games. They don't have to be bloody and gory, though that would be a plus. Give us something like Lords of Shadow. A story driven hack and slash with awesome gameplay,a deep and intricate story, and just some really bad ass weapons. Something 25-30 hours long. Not many have touched Norse mythology. While not my favorite mythology I will admit it has some pretty awesome warriors, weapons, and creatures at their disposal. That's just my 2 cents. It may be a better project for someone like Santa Monica studios, but I'd like to see them get out of their comfort zone and try something new. There's that or if they could get a hold of the rights and make a proper sequel to Dante's Inferno. I wouldn't mind that either.

Last I heard was that they were looking for people experienced in FPS gameplay for two projects, so I'm expecting the new IP to be a shooter as well. I was really hoping that they would launch the PS4 with that new IP, considering they've been talking about it since before KZ3 launched, but maybe it's better to go with the established brand for better sales figures. Resign thyselves to it being another shooter and you can't be disappointed... much.

Whatever their new IP is I just hope it's not a "free-to-play" title.

Good. The studio needs to move on to a new IP. SP did it moving from Sly Cooper to inFamous... and with success I might add. Guerrilla probably has storys to tell. Hopefully. :)

Keep playing!

Don't want anything with RPG or Dragon's Crown. They can not just go to something that they are unfamiliar with. They should stick with SciFi. i would like a space combat game or a Mass Effect type of game and a third person game. I think they can pull off a Rogue Squadron style game perfectly. Fantasy would be out of their element. Shadow Fall looks better than COD and Destiny to me, but I have always preferred Killzone as far as FPS goes and Mercenary is a great game.
