Is It Possible That The PS4 Will Be Better Advertised Than Xbox One?

For the most part, Sony hasn't been able to compete with Microsoft in terms of marketing and advertising.

I still find it inexplicable how few commercials and ads I've seen for top-tier PS3 exclusives in the past generation, while I couldn't go ten feet without seeing or hearing about the next Halo.

But going into this next generation, it appears that Sony is well positioned. Furthermore, they've obviously learned from past mistakes; the entire PlayStation 4 system is a testament to that hard-earned education. Might they also remedy another of their biggest failures over the years? Might they finally promote like crazy, almost to a point where we're seeing PS4 ads as often as we are Xbox One ads? Heck, I've already seen a PS4 commercial; that Taco Bell "Play the Future First" promotion. I haven't seen the Xbox One yet.

But in the long run, do you think the PS4 will be better marketed than the Xbox One? Or at the very least, do you think it will receive more advertising assistance than the PS3? Sony understands just how important this country is; it's part of the reason why, for the very first time in history, a new PlayStation console won't debut in Japan. So, they must understand the necessity for advertising in the US, for pushing the hell out of the PS4. And not just for the launch. They'll have to push and keep pushing. I'm just not sure they can compete with the marketing juggernaut that is Microsoft.

No, but I think I'm a bad anecdotal witness, I don't watch anything mainstream. I have no clue what these taco bell commercials are people are talking about.

I think Ben did an editorial on the whole deal about winning a PS4 by purchasing the 5 buck box. Anyways thats all the commercials are about. Nothing special just regular advertisement.

However, anything you purchase at Taco Bell has the PS4 all over it.

@WorldEndsWithMe - The Taco Bell deal obviously goes after a very specific demographic.

I won't go into it too deep as to not offend anyone. But both Sony and PepsiCo know perfectly well what they're doing with that promotion. And it will work for them.

Now, if you haven't heard of it or are not interested in it, its because you don't fall into the target audience that this campaign is aiming at. So don't feel bad about it.

ok so yea, have seen commercials for ps4 even before the taco bell promotion. now im no fanboy....but msoft managed to piss me off w their xbox one advertising. yes they are dong advertising but get this...for the most part, i've only seen it advertised during football and yes it's about football. If I were casual or rarely played games, im thinking xbox 1 is a football machine because i've only seen football ads for it. im talking about those the consumers who dont really go to gaming websites...which are obviously what audience msoft is going for but i'd be confused if i were in that group

That's all I've seen too. I think making the XBONE the "official console of the NFL" is stupid also.

I'm not ashamed to admit I've already bought a couple of $5 box lunches at taco bell. I'm not a huge taco bell fan, but I wouldn't mind saving $500 on that sweet bundle, especially before anyone else gets their hands on it.

a $ony product?
better advertised?
HA!
thats funny!
yea, sure, ps4 will be better advertised than xbox one.
just like the vita will go on to be the worlds best selling electronic device.
$ony never advertises their games here, i mean no TV adds, no adds in cinemas, no adds for billboards, hell even stores dont have much posters up.
M$ on the other hand, well, they had a halo 4 add running every 10 minutes last november, the streets were littered with posters, every bus and bustop had the posters, and so did every game store.
ps4 being better advertised........ donald duck has a better chance of becoming president of the world!

Well I would be one to say or suggest this...

They need another KEVIN BUTLER personality!!!

Yep I remember seeing all those Halo commercials as well as CoD with celebrities, etc. Sony once and a while brough Kevin out. In as much as the KB were mostly great commercials they were few and far between. And see Treton get on board for some of them was brilliant. Putting execx or CEO's in the commcercial and poking fun it great. Along with KB and his antics with the average joe and joet gamer.

MS seemed to focus on the hardcore, Sony on the casual. BUT MS seemed to be always there on the TV, Sony not so much. They gave us updates off the PSN and in Home, but not the cable.

And its holiday season coming up now for NA and Europe and other parts of the world. Now would be a good time to turn the marketer budget on and just ride the current wave of excitement that will diminish gradually.

Keep playing!

Id have somebody that's cool this time, Butler was funny but TV viewers still see a guy in a tie at an office. We need a badass.

I'm not so sure about that. Time will tell of course but I think Microsoft is going to do an absolute marketing blitz. I was at the Redskins/Eagles game a few weeks ago here in DC and the XBox One Logo was EVERYWHERE. I think that is indicative of the marketing partnership they have in place with the NFL, and the audience for the NFL is positively enormous. Give it a month or two, we're going to get SLAMMED with XBox One exposure.

What I hope Sony does is capitalize on its ability to create humor (who doesn't laugh at Kevin butler)....in this day and age I think people ..'re desperate for fun and laughs....anything to take our minds off the chaos and dysfunction going on all around us.

No Way. I drive all over NY state and have barely see an add for the PS4, one would think it is still vaporware. MS has X-1 billboards all over town, you could be driving or walking around NYC and you will see it everywhere, bus stops, subway, sports arena, you name it.
PS4 adds? You would think it launches next year :(
It's shameful indeed that Sony won't advertize its products properly. It would be nice to go back to the good old PS1 advertizing craze...

I think they should amp up the advertisement more if they want to draw in the newcomers.

During the late PS2 era, somebody at Sony (my guess is Kaz Hirai, or maybe Ken Kutaragi, lol) accidentally left the gate to the corral where they kept their marketing team open, and like you would expect, they wandered away, just like cattle.

Far away.

Sony only just recently found the last couple missing marketing team members that had vanished 8 years ago, and they put them right back to work making PS4 ads. :)

Let's hope Sony keeps that marketing team locked up and kept in a safe place for future use. ;)

I am going to guess Microsoft will still have a larger amount of TV advertisements but I definitely see Sony pushing out a lot more than they did this generation.
The one point I could easily see Sony beating Microsoft is in Viral marketing. I see Sony doing more light hearted and poking fun at Microsoft videos like the "This is how you lend a game." They could also bring the Kevin Butler character back for a small series of PS4 commercials.
