Nomura: PS4 Is "Too Much," But That RAM Will Help A Lot

Sometimes, you can't have too much of a good thing.

The PlayStation 4 will boast 8GB of RAM, which developers just adore. That includes Square Enix boss Tetsuya Nomura, who spoke about the PS4's great capability and power during a recent SCE interview (as cited by DualShockers).

When asked about the PS4, he laughed and said it's "too much," but he added that the console will have plenty of capability and it will be a challenge for developers. They'll have to step up and as such, expectations will be through the roof. The good news is that that 8GB of RAM "helps a lot" because the virtual worlds they create can be as seamless as possible. The number of actions and animations has also been significantly increased, which is good news for all you Kingdom Hearts fans.

Nomura hasn't figured out what to do with those extra Dual Shock 4 features just yet, but he does want to use the touch pad in some fashion. Personally, I say he can just ignore it on focus on making Kingdom Hearts III a gem. The followers deserve it!

cool.

but the devs actually have access to 5GBs. The remaining 3 are reserved for other purposes.

yah, a lot of things. I believe it in part helps with the 'play as you download' feature. And with 50GB sized game downloads and such, that could be useful. Other uses could be for Gakai elements and the multi media functionality.

Heh, 5 is excellent still. Wii U only has 2gb split evenly between the OS and gaming. With double what the PS3 was, I already can see an improvement.

That is just a rumour.... it was never confirmed by anyone. Just a random anonymous source who came out and said it.

There was an equally plausible rumour earlier saying that only 1GB was reserved for the OS.

Microsoft did confirm that the Xbox One would reserve 3GB for the OS. But the ps4 is all conjecture.

it's not a rumor. The Digital Foundry ran an article that cited a developer in that the PS4 only had access to just 4gbs. DF speculated on this. Then Sony themselves informed DF (so DF would correct their article) that there's 4GB hard cut for games and another 1GB used at the option of the developer in a non-trivial way. The total is 5GBs available to games.

and my mistake in claiming the controversy was over 4gbs, where instead it was over 4.5GBs with 512MB being in contention with the OS.
I know. I know. despite having an embedded 'neuro net processor' from Cyberdyne, a learning computer, accidents can still happen.

but hey, 5GB's is nothing to sneeze at so happy days for everyone

I Highly doubt the small PS4 OS needs 3GB of Ram when the X1s Three OSs need the same amount. All the info we received from the early 4GB dev kits had only around half a GB reserved for the OS. I wouldn't be surprised if this 5GB limit is just temporary and Sony is simply playing it safe for now so they do not run into any hardware issues in the first few months which are the key for gaining an install base.

So I guess FFXV is coming in 2014 and KH3 in early 2015. (I hope).

one, nvidia releases chart comparing graphics cards over the past few years and shows next gen systems are around what we had in 2010.
http://i.imgur.com/ro4mwGT.jpg
two, ps4 spec sheet revealed the GPU has 1.84TFLOP of power, http://kotaku.com/the-ps4-has-a-500gb-hard-drive-and-other-misc-details-512521805.
3 which is equivalent of a AMD HD 6870 which released in 2010, http://www.mydaily-gadget.com/news/2500-amd-radeon-hd-6850-and-6870-release-date.

and thats the GPU, lets not forget the jaguar 8 core chip that both systems use was described by AMD themselves to be a ENTRY LEVEL CHIP DESIGNED FOR WEB BROWSING NOT GAMES AND HIGH INTENSE 3D APPLICATIONS!
a THREE year old GPU, and a 1.75Ghz 8 core compared to PCs THREE Ghz 6 cores!
hell up that to 4Ghz, ive got one of the worst cases for air flow and ive got mine overclocked to 4.4 stock without barely touching the voltages!

apology accepted!

O, and i would like to point you back to the original graph, see how when the 360 released its GPU was MORE powerful than the 800 dollar plus PC GPUs?
now were not more powerful, were not same powered, were not even slightly less powerful, were THREE years less powerful!
so ill state it again, if THREE years behind is "too much", than $E truly have lost their minds!

I'm sorry underline but none of those links tell the full story.

Your references talk about GPU *only*. Nothing else is taken into consideration. And that is the problem with most of those who come with these kind of claims: They stare themselves blind on that single component and draw ALL conclutions based on that.

If you only talk about the GPU then sure - it's not the most capable GPUs money can buy. But GPU is *not* all that counts when power of a system is to be considered.

There are no - NO - system, not five years ago not three years ago - who could offer a 8gb gddr5 ram with the unified memory handling like we got here - simply cause such a system did or do not exist.
The world have not yet discovered what a game optimized for full 64bit eight core code and the internal bandwidth of a unified processor architecture AND memory architecture can do. We do not know yet. We have not seen it.

This is just the plain truth.

right, so just because it has GDDR5 memory and a unified memory pool it suddenly turns a 4 year old low spec GPU, and a CPU that was designed for web browsing NOT gaming, into "too much" of a machine.
sure, whatever, theres no point arguing with a stubborn mule.

O, btw, you do realise the reason why we only have articles on the GPU right?
thats the only thing thats been revealed, kinda hard to do articles on things which are not fully detailed.
$ony havent even come out detailing the CPU yet, everything has come from AMD and all they have said is its the jaguar 8 core, even clock speeds have not been confirmed only M$ have detailed their whole system.

"Too much" is not my words. All I am saying is that this machine has a *much* higher performance potential than a three year old PC simply cause there's more than GPU that decides the performance of a machine.

That is what I so patiently am trying to explain to you, and has tried to several times in the past.

What you spread is pure FUD. You pick out what little we do know and talk about the GPU like it was the entire console.
So sure, talk about the GPU all you like. Just make sure you specify that it's what you keep harping about, cause the world has not yet seen the performance of code written for eight core 64 bit 5gb gddr5 ram yet. That is what I am saying.

To directly compare a dedicated console to a PC in specs is just ignorant.

and i keep saying 8 core GDDR5 is not going to turn a 20 year old beetle into a veyron SS!
simple fact of the matter is the ps4 is by far the smallest leap weve ever had in a console generation, and its also been the biggest wait.
so excuse me for being bitterly disappointed when were expected to wait 2 years longer than normal, and rewarded with something less than what we normally get.

not to mention the systems hardly feel finished.
all the overheating videos turning up online, the now infamous red line of death pictures, surprise surprise theres been no article about that here.......
i bet if it was the one that had that there would of been 5 by now!
2 launch titles delayed 1 week before they would of been due for manufacturing, the weakest first party launch lineup weve ever seen, this is the fruits of 7 years worth of labour?
hey, $ony really must be using underage workers to create the ps4 like those complaints filed last week stated.
surprise surprise there was no article about that here either........

"all the overheating videos turning up online, the now infamous red line of death pictures"
Point me to those videos please. All there is is a photograph of an overheating PS4 that was enclosed in an acrylic case. Of course it'll overheat. A few minutes after the case was open it went back to its normal state.
Is anyone going to keep their PS4 in an acrylic case? Or in a generally enclosed space (with little ventilation)? If there is, that someone is probably not very smart.

Again, it's not smart to directly compare a console's specs to a PC's. I've had this discussion multiple times, and I won't elaborate again but the keyword is optimization. Having a guarantee of what hardware your software will run on is a massive advantage. If you run a PC with "equivalent" specs to the PS4's with Windows and tried playing games on it, you wouldn't play anything visually close to what the PS4 will produce.

I'm rather entirely confused by this statement. And very worried that Square-Enix is going to continue to disappoint. Reading between the lines, I get the feeling that Nomura is saying that the expectations are going to be too high for his team to reach.
