PS4 And Xbox One Pre-Order Update: Xbox One Gains Ground

The updated numbers show that as of late, the Xbox One is the hotter next-gen console.

VGChartz has tallied up the latest pre-order statistics for the US and while the PS4 still has a significant lead, Microsoft's console has gained ground.

For the week ending October 19, the PS4 sits at about 725,000 pre-orders, while the Xbox One has earned 525,000.

However, this means that since August 24 - the time of the last count - there have been an additional 175,000 Xbox One pre-orders, as opposed to only 125,000 for the PS4. Week one sales for both new systems are expected to be quite similar, in fact. As for the top 10 pre-ordered next-gen games, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 are 1 and 2 respectfully for both the PS4 and Xbox One. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs are both in the top 5, although the latter anticipated title has now been delayed until 2014.

Do you think the rise in Xbox One pre-orders is a sign that the US market is already swinging back to favor Microsoft? Well, maybe it's inevitable.

I think a lot of people are looking at launch lineups, and to be honest. It really looks like the Xbone has the better showing, though I don't think we really know how GOOD any of either console's lineup is going to be.

It's just pretty much this -> "I had a Xbox 360, all my friends have a 360. Obviously we should just get another Xbox so it's the same." That's most of the talk I hear, though I'm sure there's a lot of the same for the Ps3 -> Ps4.

Ryse could be something great or it could be a shallow QTE fest.

That really depends how much interest you have in Ryse and Dead Rising. Because let's face it, they are the only difference between line ups.

I personally have no interest in either games, so the Xbox One launch line up looks equally as stale as the PS4. At least I can have me some new Killzone.

A lot of people are weak-minded children that can only play "follow the leader" when it comes to buying and playing consoles.

I always hear people say: "Well, my friends all bought (insert console here), so that's what I'll buy too."

What that translates to in my brain is: "I have no mind of my own to make decisions for myself in life, so I'll just get what everyone else has so that I can fit in and be 'cool' like them."

I buy what system/s I want, and could give a damn what my friends play. If they play the same stuff, that's cool. If they don't, that's cool too, because at least that's their decision, and not them trying to be "cool", attempting to fit in.

I think you're being a little too harsh. A lot of people enjoy gaming with their friends and you can't blame them for wanting to do so. It has nothing to do with them not having a mind of their own. But if the differences are minimal between consoles, then that is gonna be a strong selling point to some.

For the people I know who had a 360 they bought a PS3 and will be buying a PS4. The people who never bought a PS3 are getting a PS4 over the X1. So its actually the other way around. I was the only person I knew who had a PS3 back in 2007-2009. Now everyone I know has a PS3 and will be getting a PS4, even the biggest Halo and Live fans. The common denominator is that the PS4 is better, cheaper and have the same online features which means the COD fans (COD has more pre orders on PS4) will just migrate to the PS4. The exclusive games do no matter as the most popular titles on Xbox are multiplat. None of the X1 exclusive launch games are appealing to the masses.

@ JROD I agree, but then I am not an online gamer and the PSN will be as good or better than Live this generation so expect a lot of Live gamers to make the move.

@Temjin Ryse is the type of game that does not sell on the Xbox. hence why NG, DMC, and Beyonetta all sold poorly compared to Halo and Gears. Ryse will not sell that system compared to Killzone selling the PS4.

No surprise. Everyone was saying that the Xbox1 would suffer even if/when MS did a 180 degree on DRM and others wildly contested setups.

Gamers Xbox1/PS4 can gripe all they want, but they eventually change their tune and buy the system because they do not want to feel the odd person out.

As for Sony, I do not think it is as much a gain for MS as it was for Sony. If things had remained the same like the PS3 gen, I think MS would have been sorta where it is, maybe a bit better, but Sony would have been way down in numbers. BUT Sony did the smart thing so MS won't be in the far ahead in the lead this time.

I can see MS after launch picking up more speed and possibly pass Sony, but I do not think it will be like it was for the PS3. Well, after launch it will come down to the games which really will be the longevity and success of either system.

Keep playing!

PS3 was one of the worst console launches in history. But yet it managed to catch up and has now beaten the Xbox 360 in world wide sales.

How did they achieve that? Software was probably the major reason.

So the PS3 gen has captured a huge number of people who enjoy Sony's first party exclusives. Unless MS can create exclusives to rival and/or beat the Sony exclusives, I don't see them over taking the PS4, ever.

Sony has the hardware edge but M$ Xbox 1 will utilize blu-ray for the 1st time, so yah at this talk it's mainly down to the exclusives and what particular game a person is interested in.

i believe the reason the for this is because many retailers have stopped taking ps4 preorders all together.

There is that too. But there are some also not doing it for Xbox1. In all likelihood they will hold back on supplies because they will want them at Xmas and for the duration of the holidays.

The whole idea of them holding back stock so that they have some on shelves is a little silly though.

I mean, if that is the case, then it is better for me to NOT pre order, and be at the store first in line? First in, first served is a shitty way of selling a product.

The local store I deal with said that their final PlayStation order, to guarantee product in on the 15th of November, had to be in on either October 10 or 11th.

In my opinion, playstation 4 numbers would be quite a bit higher & XBone would not be catching up so much if for the last 3-4 weeks absolutely no retailers could take any more PS4 pre-order's. I've been trying to get a PS4 pre-ordered now for 4 weeks. From any & all retailers from Amazon, Game Stop, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sear's, Toy's r Us, Fry's Electronic's & even Newegg. No one is or can full-fill any more for PS4. But since the XBone has been available I like other's could just go ahead, get one of those & not be left with nothing while so many of our friends are playing "the next great system of the decade. I for one will wait it out for the PS4 at the midnight release way early for the hopes of getting my hands on one.

Australia has been all pre-ordered out for a couple months now. While the Xbox One still has plenty left lol.

Not sure what that says.

Uhhhh. This is a silly article.

Xbot:"Hey the Xbox One got more pre orders this week than the PS4"
Person:"Oh really? How many pre orders do they both have in total now?"
Xbot:"Xbox has 100, and PS4 has 5,000. But only 5 people pre ordered a PS4 this week, ZOMFG PS4 is dead in the water already. Sony will be bankrupt in a week."

That is basically a typical Xbot reaction to an article like this.

No offence, but who cares who sold the most since Aug. There have been many conventions since Aug where thousands of people would have had a chance to go hands on with the Xbox One, probably made them want to pre order one. Word of mouth is also very powerful.

But isn't the most important thing, who is leading the total pre orders?

There are a lot of young children in this country that simply have their parents buy them the next xbox because it's what they've had and the parents simply buy it because their kid tells them to.

So many people in this country never read reviews and even parents who have heard some talk about the xbox 1 sucking they still will go out and buy it because there kid wants it.

In the end, both will sell well regardless of games, advertising, and quality.

the drop of drive club certainly did not help the ps4s preorders.
especially since weve gone from getting a full priced retail game for + for free, to getting contrast a downloadable game which on PC is 20 bucks here!
BIG difference between a big budget epic exclusive retailing at 100+ and a small low budget multiplatform game retailing at a FIFTH of that!
not to mention releasing a new console without a racing exclusive is like releasing a new car without air con!
kinda become standard and expected within the past decade.........

Sony has had a few unfortunate things lately making them lose momentum while Microsoft seem to have been able to throw all the garbage out there months ago, with the market slowly restituting after the shock.

Sony must now just hammer into the collective skull of the market that they offer the most powerful console. It's their strongest card.

Some people have money to burn and want to see for themselves if Microsoft is sincere. I don't need to ask anyone that question, myself.

The U.S. and U.K. markets are still Microsoft's at this time and Sony must convince these people to buy their console. Giving them all the bells and whistles to "be themselves" is a start. Maybe Sony should release a Dubstep game in the U.K. market. I hear the U.K. 360 fanbase loves Dubstep.

Just checked Amazon. PS4 tops the chart @ #1 and #3. While XboxOne is #17. Only XboxOne game in the top 40 is COD Ghosts @ #38. Forza is nowhere in the top 100 while Ryse, Titan Fall and Dead Rising (#100) are all after 90. Both Knack and Shadow Fall are way above any of those games. Why are people saying the XboxOne has the advantage in launch games again? Their so called big game Forza does not even rank and Ryse is #90.
