Sony Details List Of PS4 Features Granted By Update 1.50

There will be all sorts of cool features available for the PlayStation 4 launch. Well, provided you download the new update, of course.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced system software update 1.50 for the PS4, which will be immediately available upon the North American launch of the console on November 15. Updating will let you enjoy a variety of great next-gen features, and here they are:

Remote Play

Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link. SCE anticipates that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play.

Second Screen

Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation®App for iPhone, iPad, and Android™ based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation®App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on THE PLAYROOM, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation®Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Record, take screen shots, and upload gameplay effortlessly

The PS4 system provides dedicated, "always on" video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the "SHARE button" on PS4 Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4), take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system's launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter.

Broadcast and spectate gameplay

The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services. SCE provides two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation® application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation® users. Second, users can spectate friends' PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation®App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation®Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Play as you download

This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

Multi log-in

A maximum of 4 users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multi-player game together on a single PS4 system.

Party (Voice chat)

By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

Face recognition and voice commands

Users with PlayStation®Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DUALSHOCK®4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DUALSHOCK®4, or PlayStation®Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation®Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features.

Background music player

Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music.

Online Multiplayer

PlayStation®Plus (PS Plus) members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

Blu-ray Disc and DVD player

Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents."

My only question is, why are these features available only after a software update, and not on the PS4 in-box?

Welcome to gaming in 2013. I love the way company's can update at will, but it seems there might be a dependence on the whole internet system.

Hardware was probably beginning to roll off the line in August and they hadn't finalize all the software yet. It was more important to get hardware in production as early as possible to make sure they could make enough units so they could launch this year.

Exactly this Simcoe. We do it all the time in the CPE and STB industry. You can't wait until all the final software is ready to go to production, especially when you have to produce a few million units. You build hardware, and when software is released you patch.

I dont see why this couldnt be included on a disc jn the box. The ps4 was touted as a non-online gaming console, it was one of sonys big eff you points to MS. But you need a day one patch to even play blu ray movies? Wtf is up with that? Are you telling me they hadnt worked out how to play blu ray movies on it before production began?

I'm guessing like the PS3 updates, you can download them on your computer and transfer them to the PS4 via DVD or USB stick. Or like PS3 disc-based games, I suspect that PS4 disc-based games will come with the latest firmware included on disc. When I first got my PS3, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction had also just been released and when I inserted that disc into the machine it said it needed to update the PS3's firmware (and my PS3 had not yet been hooked up to the internet).

Good to see it still has the ability to play DVD's, first time I've heard of it and I have 100's. Also, does the PS4 hav a community section like The Wii-U. On the Wii-U you can go onto the games page and post commments, photos and ask questions. I happen to find it really active and really well implemented.

This is the kind of thing I want to see about a console, up until now we've not know much about what the console delivers. I'm still waiting for a proper walkthrough of the interface. Which will no doubt happen at launch.

Now I'm worried, " SCE anticipates that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play." Highlight on the "anticipates" and the "most"

I'm so irritated at how few ps3 games could be remote playable but sony refuses to unlock them and they were saying all ps4 games would be, but now they are anticipating most games.

I feel another bait and switch. I love my sony products, but it seems my vita was promised a lot just to have those promises swept under the rug.

Anticipates? I could've sworn Sony said Remote Play functionality for the Vita was mandatory.

I don't know, I guess if they put all PS4 titles can be used with remote play and an odd one can't, they can get sued for false advertising? Just a guess.

It's been some time since Sony announced that not all PS4 games will be playable on the Vita. They're referring to the games that utilize inputs not available on the Vita (e.g. the PlayStation Eye). I hope that that's all of it though. We'll all see when the PS4 launches.

I understand that certain games, like move games, probly won't fly on the vita, but with all the back tracking they've done with vita, it just worries me.

They need to use the word "anticipates that most" because they even said before that games that utilize the ps4 camera for controls will most likely not be able to remote play. But everything else can remote play. I'm sure it was said on stage at one of the events

No CD player?

It's kinda bizarre that they need an update to make all of this work day one, but it's still better than the X1 needing one to work at all.

Hmm, the EB Games I went into this evening didn't have any on display...or were they just sold out??? I did however see an actual PS4 that I could actually touch (not behind some piece of acrylic), setup for use at a Sony store. It's actually much smaller than I was thinking it would be.

left 1 thing out, the suspend/ resume function wont be ready till a future update.
sigh, another day, another ps4 delay.
and this is the results of SEVEN years of work!?
i just cant understand how $ony can get their systems up and ready for release within 5 years each release, but now, weve given them seven, two years longer than normal, and now is when everything falls behind?
we can get it done in 5 years, but not in 7.
right.
everything about this system just SCREAMS RUSHED!
which is extremely concerning considering weve been waiting SEVEN freaking years for it, and even more concerning that were going to have to put up with it for probably just as long if not longer.

I thought you cancelled your PS4 pre-order. Why do you care about suspend and resume? By the time you get your PS4, if you do get one, they may have already updated for that feature.

i care because its the exact reason why i wont be buying one for a while.
SEVEN freaking years in development, by far the longest ever, and there by far the furthest behind as well.
how the blazes does that work!?
far more simpler system, more time to do things, so that makes things take LONGER!?

The exact reason you're delaying buying one is because the suspend and resume function wont be ready day-one? It's not like this feature was ever available on previous PlayStation consoles. Besides, they just announced that suspend and resume wont be ready day-one (and these other features will be available via a day-one update), you stated weeks ago that you had already cancelled your pre-order.

I think they are further ahead this time with the PS4, compared to the PS3. At least they'll have more units available at launch, in more places, before Christmas this time compared to the PS3's launch.

Article is about day-one patch.

You: Mention that suspend and resume won't even be ready on day-one. You list no other actual delay, just rant that the PS4 is releasing seven years after the PS3 (because you think it should have been released within five years). Then you claim that it's rushed?!

Me: I question why you care about (and only about) the suspend and resume function, when I though that you had already cancelled your PS4 pre-order.

You: Respond to my question stating it's (suspend and resume) "the EXACT reason why I wont be buying one for a while."

Me: I point out that you previously mentioned that you had already cancelled your PS4 pre-order prior to any confirmation from Sony that they would not have "suspend and resume" ready at launch. Essentially pointing out that you could not have used the excuse that suspend and resume was THE reason why you cancelled your pre-order.

In your most recent post you again state "the constant delays of pretty much everything" but then fail to list any features that are actually being "delayed". The only feature that you do specifically list in this entire exchange is the suspend and resume function - that's it! Your other argument is that you're upset that the PS4 is releasing seven years after the PS3. You seem to believe that Sony owes you a new console generation every 5 years, just because you believe that does not make it an actual "delay". Sony never promised the PS4 would be released in 2011. You're upset because Sony took extra time to "ask" third-party developers what they wanted, instead of Sony "telling" them what they wanted? I'll also point out that Sony has never released a new console generation in less than 60 months. The time between console debuts:
PS1 (Dec. 1994) and PS2 (Mar. 2000) - 5.25 years,
PS2 and Ps3 (Nov. 2006) - 6.67 years.
The time between each iteration appears to be increasing, and the PS4's release is not that far off between the debuts of the PS2 and PS3.

To cancel a pre-order because one feature (of many) wont be available seems odd, even though it's delay was announced well after you claimed to have cancelled your pre-order. Then to try and claim that the reason why you're delaying (or not) getting a PS4 (again after you cancelled your pre-order) is because it's coming out this year (2013) instead of 2011, is just bizare. You knew when you placed your pre-order for the PS4, that it would be coming out "Holiday 2013", seven years after the PS3, yet you then decide to cancel your pre-order? And when was that again?

The only other actual feature/function delays that won't be available day-one, that I know about, and you failed to even list, are: wireless USB compatibility issues (even though the DualShock 4 is designed to allow any wired 3.5 mm headset plugged into it to work) and the delay of two games Drive Club (not strictly a PS4 problem, but nevertheless a Sony owned developer) and Watch Dogs. GaiKai was said to begin roll-out sometime in 2014 and was only purchased in 2012 (so certainly could not have even been in development for five years).
