Ghosts Is A Native 1080p On PS4, While It's Upscaled On Xbox One

Considering the sheer popularity of the game in question, this is a big win for Sony.

For a while now, there have been resolution rumors concerning Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. To clarify those rumors, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin hit Twitter to confirm that in fact, the PS4 has the edge:

"Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven't had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we're 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we're native 1080p on PS4. We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both."

Okay, so maybe you don't think there's a significant difference between an upscaled 1080p and a native 1080p, but ask one of those technologically proficient people and they'll tell you otherwise. We're also hearing more rumors that Ghosts won't be the only multiplatform game that hits a native 1080p on the PS4, while still being an upscaled 1080p on the Xbox One.

Does this mean many big-name multiplatform titles might be best experienced on Sony's machine...?

Glad to see that they are starting the trend of making the better system run the game better, I was worried that we might see a lot of dumbing down for the sake of equity. With CoD doing the right thing, hopefully others will too.

Booya.

This was to be expected, just judging by the GPU strengths between the two platforms. Honestly, this is a BIGGER jump then what I imagined. Whatever special sauce XO has it's one of those discrete harder to reach things. The benefits of PS4's added GPU power is much more readily tangible for devs.
I really think this is a massive blow to MS. XBox has been the platform of choice for CoD. Having a 2x increase in rendering resolution will make everyone stop and turn their heads and say, "hey, that looks much sharper, with more detail and more exacting color."
My only question from here is how do the frame rates compare? If 1080p has been achieved, I hope it's not at the expense of a more stable frame rate in comparison to the XO.

That 8GB GDDR5 and the new DS4 really help as well. I can see CoD/FPS gamers really embracing the PS4. The DS4 is that good, cannot wait to put it through the motions myself.

I hope Xbox diehards take a look at the resolution gap and ask themselves, "did MS really force me to spend $100 extra on a camera and left me, their core who got them where they are today with Xbox, a gimped console?"
Really, Xbox gamers have been royally screwed. They're both paying more and getting less than ever. All because of MS's deluded pursuit of being in love with themselves. No one wants MS's new ideas as much as MS does and they're making you pay for it.

I mean really, the Kinect has launched nothing but crap. Nintendo showed us with the Wii that marketing to that crowd is a "here today, gone tomorrow, crowd"
And to think MS saw fit to bundle that crap camera hardware and force so many who wanted nothing to do with kinect, as they saw exactly what it was, to support it.

EDIT: MS is going to loss so much of their base this next gen it's sick. They're both more expensive and significantly under performing in areas that matter a lot to us gamers. MS will experience what S-E is experiencing with FF. Trying to make your product more for the masses will just make the ground founded on the core fall out beneath you.

Well maybe they need to get out of the gaming business and make room for a serious competitor instead of just another greedy corporate entity bent on destroying the competition and controlling the market.

Sega can't make software for sh*t anymore, maybe it's time for the Dreamcast 2.

Things will just get uglier for MS once Titanfall's sequel releases. Apparently the exclusivity is ONLY for the first game. And knowing how these sort of games work, we're sure to see 8, or so, TitanFall games by generation's end.

Well only by a week, and considering the game launches on current gen 10 days before that, I don't think it's going to matter, if there are extremely hardcore cod fanatics who can't wait a week then they're not gonna wait the 10 days.

Before people start saying you can't even notice the difference 8 ft away from your TV. I want to know why a company with massive extra loads of cash skimped on their next gen console? The PS4 only needs to sell 1 game to break even. Microsoft could have really kicked Sony's butt on specs. I am floored they didn't see this coming. The ESRam is a joke and looks to be just as hard to program for than the cell was. It's like the companies flip flopped. I cannot wait to see the sales numbers come 1/2014.

This is Sony's gen to lose. As long as we see the Sony that took over last gen they will win this gen. The X180 is weaker than the PS4, fact. In the footage I saw it was obvious that the PS4 version of BF4 looked better. Heck the WiiU verson of BF4 is 1080p even though there is probably less going on graphically with the WiiU version. Got my DS4 today and it's amazing. I am very excited for this next gen and the PS4!

There are a lot of rumors going out there by some who "supposedly" have friends in both camps stating it will only run at 720 on both systems or both will be upscaled.

I get the feeling, regardless, that trash is surely passing through the communities to do damage.

Just not sure where the damage is suppose to be.

Its going to be interesting to watch how this all ACTUALLY develops on launch for both systems. Wheres my popcorn?

Keep playing!

one thing thats really interesting is looking at the BF4 comparison videos yesterday the xbox one seems to be a bit brighter and more vibrant, where the ps4 version looks a bit more dull.
which is really strange considering the 360 has always been the darker one and the ps3 much more washed out.
i was really hoping $ony would fix this looks like they finally have!
one thing thats really been bugging me allot of games looked so washed out they look like a painting made with water based paint instead of oil based.

How did we all know that you would jump on the BF4 looks better on Xbox band wagon.

There are multiple versions of the next-gen BF4 footage, and not all of them are the same, some of them don't have the 'haze' on the PS4 version, so it's theorised that it is caused by the capturing hardware/software used.

Also, several sites have done detailed analysis of the footage and determined the PS4 wins by a large margin, and is a lot closer to the PC version than the Xbox.

It's funny what marketing can do, just because it's next-gen and the Xbox One can't do native 1080p Microsoft is now calling it "upscaled 1080p", while what they're really saying is: The game's running in 720p, which is what current-gen has been using for the past 8 years.

"Upscaling" to 1080p is what every HD 1080p TV already does with everything you watch on it, whether it's from your PS3 or Xbox 360, or Xbox One.

It's like when blu-ray was new and upscaling DVDs was all the rage, because that way you could make your old movies look "like" HD movies, which of course is a joke, because you're still using the same SD video frame, and "filling in the blanks" to show it on an HD display, there's no extra detail shown.

Does the PS3 actually upscale to 1080p? I know when I check my output settings when I play games it always says 720p - Apart from Metal Gear Solid 4... but that could just be my TV...

@Ultimadesires on the XMB your tv should be reporting 1080p (if not then you may have to check your PS3's settings). Some games are also 1080p but most are 720p. If you PS3 is set for 1080p then it should automatically downscale to 720p when a game is played that is only outputting a 720p signal. Now some games, developer dependant, might have a native 720p game but then will take the time and resources to upscale to 1080i/p. One example I remember (though it was with 1080i) is Burnout Paradise, on the PS3 it output at either 480i/p or 720p but with an update allowed 1080i as some older tv's could only do HD in 1080i (rather than 720p)

Ultimadesires, no the PS3 doesn't upscale, but my point was that your TV does upscale 720p to 1080p (if you have a 1080p TV that is) automatically regardless because that's the native resolution of your TV. If it didn't, your game would take up only 50% of your TV screen, since 1080p uses more than twice the amount of pixels than 720p does...

Akuma07

TV's upscale images by default, if your TV didn't upscale, then your DVD's would only take up half or less of your screen.

Upscale basically means, stretching the image to the desired screen resolution.

Take an image as an example.

Image 1: Taken with a high resolution camera.
Image 2: Taken with a low resolution camera.

Take both images, and stretch them to 1080p (1920x1080px). Image 1 will still be crisp and clear, while Image 2 will be pixelated and very ugly.

COD runs @ 1080p on the PS4, while it runs at 720p on the Xbox One. So basically, the Xbox One version needs to be upscaled (Stretched) to that resolution, while the PS4 version runs that resolution natively. So naturally the PS4 version will look better.

We should be at full 1080p HD resolution by now. For every game. If they can't even manage that this generation isn't ready yet. People whine about the Wii-U's hardware but from my understanding it's in full 1080p.

As games arent in the deciding factor this gen as both the consoles seem to have them all it is down to hardware. So within the next month we will be finding out sneaky details like this. Im not getting a PS4 yet, but I will be interested to see peoples reactions and full videos exploring the interface.

I've been saying for years, software development is lagging behind hardware capability.

This just proves how badly it is lagging behind.

Most software doesn't even remotely take advantage of multi-core processors.

I actually suspect this has more to do with the memory than it has with the GPUs. But either way, I expect to see more like this the years ahead.
What's great is that it shows this early. Surely every console gamer must understand that this is a hands-on real life example of what hardware has the edge?
