GameStop's Midnight Launches May Not Be Well Staffed

If you're planning to attend any midnight launch event at GameStop, you may have to wait in line for a while.

Midnight launches have become awfully popular for massive games like Call of Duty, and there's a darn good chance that many GameStop locations will have midnight launch events for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this month.

However, according to a source speaking to OmniGamer, the retailer has been forced to cut back midnight launch employee hours by 30-40 percent. That's pretty darn significant and it could impact any and all upcoming launch parties your local store(s) have planned. Lower-than-expected sales of this past week's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 have resulted in the cutback, so only one employee might be present at a midnight launch.

Of course, there may be a great many people who are waiting to get either or both of those titles for a next-gen console. I know I am.

1 employee? Ridiculous. That's just begging for trouble. On many levels. Irresponsible.

Also seems ridiculous to compare a game launch to the launch of a new console. Even if you don't pre-order a game, discs are so easy and cheap to produce that the publishers and the store would be stupid not to have more than enough games available to all who want one. Hardware is much more finite at launch and unless you've pre-ordered and want one for Christmas, you might want to wait in line for those midnight openings.

Well, a corporation wouldn't want to squander their profits on those pesky employees now would they?

I guess they have to pay them all for at least an hour, right? If four employees can process them all (or until supplies run out) in 30 minutes, why not just pay two of them to process everyone in 60 minutes! Who cares if those front-line employees take all the customer rage for having to wait twice as long to get their new system. The store will have saved $20 in labour costs!

In Canada, it's the law to pay 3 hours minimum a shift. If you get called in and sent home after an hour, they have to pay you for three. If you are scheduled to work, you show up, and they change their mind about needing you that day, they still pay you for three.

Exception is if you agree to it. But you are always entitled to your three hours.

4 people at 30 minutes = 2 hours
2 people at 60 minutes = 2 hours

There's no saving labor costs there.

Save the trouble and just preload a digital version. really, games like battlefield and cod already rely on an internet connection to enjoy so why not just save yourself the trouble and play it the minute it turns midnight.

I don't believe Future Shop will be doing a Midnight opening but I've been there for Black Ops and Boxing Day and they are well staffed. I'd rather buy the system Friday morning anyway.

And that one employee will be the Store Manager. Most likely in a pissy mood, and full of bitter rage! At least that's how it goes down at my local GameStop! So happy to not be working there anymore! Midnight Launch "party's" were always a nightmare to work!

The GameStop store manager in my town is the best one in the entire corporation.

He just got bribed to come back by the district manager after trying out a managerial spot at the B-Dubs next door for 6 months or so.

The store manager that came in to replace him during his absence was one of those stereotypical douchebags that everyone always seem to complain about having in their stores, and he was fired a month or so ago for being really sh***y to his employees and customers.

I wouldn't be shopping there anymore if he hadn't come back, so I understand how others feel about GameStop.

Somehow, I think "well-staffed" is a lower priority to many gamers. ;-)
