Call Of Duty: Ghosts Hits $1 Billion

It didn't take long for the latest Call of Duty to once again make $1 billion.

Less than 24 hours after the game hit store shelves, Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Ghosts reached the $1 billion sell-in mark.

The publisher also noted the new title's #1 ranking on Xbox Live, and said Ghosts is the most pre-ordered release at GameStop. Over 15,000 GameStop locations held midnight launches for the anticipated title, but it's interesting that we're not getting a total sales figure. Said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg:

"Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty.

Hirshberg added that Ghosts is the "must-have launch title for next gen consoles," and the company expects the new CoD offering to be "the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin." Well, that's probably true. However, the "amazing game" quote may not jive with the acquired review scores, which seem to indicate a somewhat disappointing production...

I usually don't take the publisher at their word, especially Activision. We should look for retailers statistics.

If this title "ushers in the next generation of call of duty" then fans don't have much to look forward to in the next eight years.

Its not like they had much going on the last 7 years anyway. What's another 7 years into the next generation?

its funny that ps4 (at 1080p resolutiion) preorders for Ghosts are well ahead of xbone (720p resolution)after microsoft paid them the big $$$ to appear as the COD console. If xbone ghost sales don't improve - I can see micro$oft hitching their wagon entirely to Titanfall and paying huge monies to ensure that franchise stays an xbone exclusive and not just for the first game.

I wonder will activision try and boost sales numbers by claiming all of us who paid the $10 for the upgrade from PS3 to PS4 versions as another sale. That should count as one sale only.(and the same with BF4)

I'm actually surprised to hear that X1 pre-orders for CoD would be higher. Also wondering if that is for Canada or Europe? USA pre-orders for CoD on VGChartz still seem to have X1 ahead of PS4 (as of Nov. 2).

That would be really weird if they manage to get an MP only game to release every year.

pretty nuts. it would seem the CoD franchise is a self perpetuating beast. Doesn't even need anything better than ~70% in ratings to smash the competition. critics can complain all they want about the lack of innovation but it would seem something like CoD has more in common with the NFL and professional sports (same game different year) than it does your general single player focused affair.

It takes 3 days for GTA V to hit a bilion and this does it in less than 24 hours? I'm dubious, especially since it took Black Ops 2 more than 2 weeks (15 days in fact) to manage that. The franchise is popular but it didn't become that much popular in a year!

Not sure if the term "sell-in" is some fancy way of saying shipped. I read on other sites that they have "shipped" $1 billion worth of games, so if games are $60 a pop, then they've shipped close to 17 million discs to retailers world-wide (including PC, PS3, PS4, X360, X1, and WiiU). Ultimately, some of discs may end up being returned to the publisher where they will ultimately be destroyed...perhaps in a New Mexican landfill.
