Report: PS4 Sales Will Reflect On Kaz Hirai's Performance

Many people thought Kaz Hirai's promotion to Sony CEO was the right move.

But you still have to deliver. And according to what Macquarie Group analyst Damian Thong told Bloomberg Japan (as translated by DualShockers), Sony really needs to hit their PlayStation 4 sales expectations. If they don't, it will reflect poorly on Kaz.

Sony expects to sell 5 million units before the end of the fiscal year on March 31. That's somewhat ambitious for a new piece of hardware, and if the goal isn't hit, skepticism about the company's stability will rise. Here are a couple quotes:

"Sales of the PS4 will be seen as an indication of the ability of Kaz Hirai as President."

"If the PS4 sells below expectations, skepticism will strengthen on whether Sony can really restore (it’s finances) or not."

The PS4 might get off to a running start, though, as GameStop may have seen significantly more PS4 pre-orders than Xbox One pre-orders. But of course, as always, any console requires great software, so we hope to see more of that on the immediate horizon.

It will depend a LOT on console availability, but the lack of must-have software is going to make that goal hard too. The wait to release in Japan makes more sense with the lack of software in mind.

And games. It seems the ps4 is headed for a drought right after launch for quite some time. Sony needs to show more worthwhile stuff coming from their studios, and fast.

Infamous Second Son is released in Feb. That's only 3 months after release. Which isn't bad, and still gives them time for a last minute Second Son infused push before the end of the quarter.

Much better than the 6-9 months between game releases with the PS3 launch.

Also, fingers crossed that Destiny get's released before the end of fin year, I believe that will push a fair few systems too.

EDIT: @ Temjin, well there is rumour that Sony will have some new game announcements at Spike.

I think Sony has it's key studios tied down to too many different platforms.
Media Molecule is on Vita. Polyphony is on PS3. Naughty Dog just finished the Last of Us. Same with Quantic Dream... and Beyonds sales appear miserable. That Game Company has gone multiplat.

Don't know here. Ambitious goals for a single platform without ambitious support doesn't seem like a success plan.

If I were Sony I'd want all my Vita devs working on console games, that thing was not ready. Then I'd have a pow-wow with David Cage about making games that aren't for gamers, remind him that scores matter.

When I look at the Wii U I see a company who wasn't prepared with their own ip's. Who then relied too heavily on multiplat support. This next gen is riddled with Trans gen games. Looking back on prior PS eras it would seem a very high percentage of software was exclusive to the new platform. And judging by the sales of Ghosts one has to wonder how many are really waiting to play a full HD version of the same game.

You're forgetting that for 10$ these people will be able to upgrade to ps4/xbone version. Why wait?

It has more pre orders than ps2 and ps3 did so reaching their goal will be easy.PS2 had nothing after launch and PS4 looks to have more. You seem to not realize there is no competition since X1 is not affordable or appealing.

Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerilla, Japan Studio are the first party studios that I know of that are actively working on at least one PS4 game.

With other second party studios like Ready At Dawn, and Quantic Dream also working on PS4 exclusives.

I'd say they are pretty focused.

I'm pretty much sure that the release of Infamous: Second Son will greatly boost the sales of the PS4...

Not concerned about Kaz Hirai. You can't blame him for software delays. The power of the console vs the competition, the $399 price tag ($200-300 lower than the launch PS3) and the trust factor all are in Sony's favor. 5 million is a bit high but it's doable. If not March 31 then shortly thereafter.

I was somewhat disappointed with InFamous 2 but I think Second Sun will be Sucker Punch's BioShock Infinite.

Not every single product launch will decide the fate of a CEO. They are charged with running the company, for the short and long term, they have both short and long KPI's.

The PS4 is a rather large product launch, and the biggest since Kaz took over, being a previous Playstation executive, if the PS4 fails, it will reflect extremely badly on Kaz.

I very highly doubt that any executives at MS lost their jobs over the XB1 crap that has happened. Nor will they if it goes badly.

seriously?
so why did don matrick leave?
why did # deal with it leave?
and i dident say every product release would have that effect.
most products if there f*cked up who cares there replaced by the following years model.
hell, some even get replaced after a few months like $ony did with their xperia z.
and people complain about apple releasing a new iphone every year.........
better once a year than almost 3 times a year!

you cant blame the CEO for bad sales when it comes to a console the problem is Sony can only attract a select audience its up to the other Devs to attract the rest

people need to realise if theirs no JRPGS on a console at launch you will not get those sales til the JRPGS come out

if theirs no Action games at launch you wont get your action game audience

if theirs no Beat em up games you will lose that audience

Sony is only 1 company it takes many companys to make a video game system great so instead of blaming their own they should be encouraging other devs to make games

Knightzane i will disagree for 1 reason nobody likes to admit
a decent sized of your 3 to 5 million that buy Naughty dog games don't just buy Naughty dog game you Find me 5 million people who buy a system just for
1 companys games and then ill agree with you

i myself have bought a few Naughty dog games but they weren't my top choices nor were they the reason i bought any system

i bought the PS1 for JRPGS but also bought crash 1 2 3 CTR crash bash spyro
twisted Metal FF7 8 9 Legend of dragoon Breath of fire 3 4 Monster rancher 1 2 list goes on but my point should be made clear i didn't buy the system for crash

also i bought the PS1 2 and a half years after it came out

PS2 was around the same 2 and a half years after it came out

PS3 i didn't buy until like 3 years after it came out

PS4 most likely will be 2 years after it comes out ill pick it up
