Miss October Wants To See Lotsa New Stuff Next Generation
Yesterday, we told you why Playboy's Miss October, Pamela Horton, just isn't interested in playing shooters online. Short version- Too many idiots.
But we talked about other topics as well, and that included the onset of the new generation of gaming hardware. When I asked her what she wanted to see from the upcoming consoles, she said she quite simply wants something new. In other words, new IPs and not necessarily a slew of seemingly endless sequels.
"As much as I love a lot of the shooters and Assassin's Creed and all those games, I'm really looking for something new. It seems like no one is really trying new titles these days, so I'm hoping the new systems give way to some new games that can become the next big thing.
People are all looking at the Wii U and going, 'oh, I want a new Mario,' and they're looking at the PS4 and going, 'oh, I want a new God of War,' or 'what's the next shooter going to be?' I just want games nobody has ever seen before. It's almost like they've run out of ideas, but I have a feeling there will be new games [on the new consoles] that I'll really want to try. I have high hopes."
Sounds pretty sharp to me. We all love the heavy-hitting sequels, especially when they're Game of the Year-quality. But the industry will always require fresh blood, so new IPs are absolutely essential to continued health. As I reminded Pamela, huge franchises like Assassin's Creed and Uncharted were brand new at the start of this generation, so what she's asking for seems like a possibility and a darn good idea.
Catch the full interview with Ms. Horton in a few days.

Basically, there are quiet of bit of new IPs this generation. I think next generation will be the same, but I think it's unfair to say developers aren't trying to bring something new, if that's what she's implying.

Aside from that we've gotten plenty of new ip's this generation and they continue to come. I mean Dishonored just dropped today. The last of us is coming along with Beyond two souls. Also some of the most memorable games have dropped this generation. Yea we've seen a lot of sequels like AC, Uncharted, Bioshock, and so on, that also made their 1st appearance this gen. But we've also seen games that are just one of a kind and really, really good for the industry that we probably wouldn't have seen previously; Journey, Heavy Rain, LBP.
So to say we need something new; I dont agree with. We get plenty of new every year, problem is the sequels just overshadow anything else because they keep getting better.

Already mentioned is Dishonored, Last Of Us and Beyond Two Souls, allow me to add DUST 514 and Watch Dogs to this list, two games I am very excited to learn more about.
Of course, I'd love to see even *more* new IPs, but we still get'em...! And a new generation doesn't change the fact that there will be another COD, another Battlefield, another GTA, another Assassins Creed, and so forth.

I agree. And it's a very good point that sequels are inevitable especially upon pending success of the series.
Btw - OT: have you finished borderlands 2? I finally got it last night started an assassin class and a siren class. Played a little with a buddy. Next week I'm
Gonna real start getting into it, I want to finish Leons campaign in RE6 before I move onto another game entirely.

And since there's nothing but money to be saved with waiting before buying a game, I'll wait with B2 and Dishonoured until i can start playing them. :)

not to say we shouldent get sequels of current franchises, one big mistake we saw happen with current gen is allot of people were slow to adopt because of its high price points and not many sequels till later.
but new IPs need to be the push, the drive to next gen.
and new IPs as in new fresh unique ideas.
we VERY rarely see new things, so hopefully will see allot more of new genres so to speak next gen.
we have had heavy rain come in and create its own sub genre, so lets see what other styles are out there awaiting to be discovered.

GoW2 did well, so it should be a non issue for The Last of Us.

If you want to get away from shooters and the like, there are ways to do it.
Ms Horton if you're reading this....try The Idolm@ster 2 for PS3, it's an import from Japan, but it's completely different from anything you'll find released here. Personally I wish that Namco would release a version of the game in NA/EU with subtitles in English/Spanish/French/German/etc... You could not change the audio, that's an intrinsic part of what makes the game what it is. There are online guides to help players who don't read/speak Japanese, and they make the game very possible to play.
