Tretton On PlayStation: "We've Always Been Console Leaders"
For many a core gamer - like me - PlayStation has always defined gaming.
So, not many were surprised to hear SCEA CEO Jack Tretton tell Bloomberg that the brand "defines gaming," and the recently released PlayStation 4 console is the company's "best effort yet."
"We've always been console leaders. We're at 80 million plus on the PlayStation 3, which is on par with our competition. We're relevant on a worldwide basis and have been for three generations in a row. So we really think that PlayStation defines gaming and PlayStation 4 is our best effort yet. And the consumer reaction has been phenomenal, the development community is behind us, so we really have a lot of headwinds behind us."
Tretton argued that at $399 ($100 cheaper than the Xbox One), with 180 games in development, 23 available on day one, the PS4 is easily the better buy. He also said it's "by far and away the most powerful console" and it boasts "the best lineup of games." That last point is arguable on day one but we have no doubt that such a statement will prove true in the coming years. The exclusive software will see to that.
