PS4 Red Line Of Death Reports Spread

The PlayStation 4 isn't having the smoothest launch in terms of reliability.

After initial problems supposedly related to the HDMI port (later confirmed as being a system issue that might be easily fixed), rumors of the "Red Line of Death" have started cropping up around the Internet.

They're a little more than rumors now, though, as evidenced by this report at VGN. Multiple users in various communities and forums are saying their PlayStation 4 systems are essentially dead, and they're seeing a red light on the system. A few months ago, there was talk about the PS4 overheating and giving users that red light, so perhaps some people are simply playing too long. But other problems have been encountered, such as a "grinding" Blu-Ray drive.

Combine this with the fact that the PlayStation Network remains down, and Sony might want to move fast to reassure consumers.

Ack! Doom and gloom! After glancing at a video I'm reasonably certain some people are destroying their consoles on purpose in order to put up the video of their red line to get hits on N4G.

Seen a video of a dude walk out of the store with one, set it on the ground (while in the new box) and start hitting it with a baseball bat. Not sure why but whatever.

Im not sure how this thing can overheat though, its super quiet, has enouvh air flow availability and literally uses no power. It doesnt even have a ground for the power cord.

Bigrailer,
There were similar videos back in 2006 after the PS3 launch. It's just Microsoft fanboy posturing. Fanboyism in general is stupid, but spending hundreds of dollars on a console only to immediately destroy it is certifiable behavior.

bigrailer, the PS4 actually does get alarmingly warm to the touch, no matter how well ventilated the thing is.
It's quite shocking, actually. I'm scared that my PS4 will break down, given the heat.

Still working as of now, but I just thought I'd point out that it isn't as 'cool' as most people make it out to be.

I believe a lot of the bad news is XBox fans talking trash and making it look bad.

This is the sad result of the console wars being worse then they ever have been.

This is going to continue for a while I can tell. However, if this red line has to do with overheating the manual plainly says shut the machine off. Im sure people are continually resetting and starting it up again causing failures. The red line is a warning, cant fix stupid.

I guess over heating isn't a surprise when you beef up a machine. My Vaio I bought for gaming gets really hot when simply using it for simple tasks. I stopped playing games on it because it got even hotter while playing. I miss the good old days when consoles get get so hot.

Yeah my PS4 isnt getting hot though, so im confused by all this. Its gotta be just like the PS3 where people finally realized they couldnt put it in a closed space, on carpet, or in small spaces. I would assume thats the only reason these things heat up.

I never smother my consoles. I'm so paranoid I move them back and forth from basement to the bedroom when seasons change. Speaking of console failure worries, my slim PS3 sounds like it's going to take a dumb. The disc drive is way too loud. Hope I don't have to replace it.

The first slim model. It failed on me once already but it was the power supply and was easily fixable. Was able to fix it at a local shop for $40. If it's the disc drive this time, it's going to be a bigger problem.

If its getting louder when accessing the disk you can clean the interior and blu ray Len using rubbing alcohol on the end of a swab. If the pro Lem persists you only need a new laser. It'll run u about 25 bucks with shipping or $80 to $100 at a shop. Good luck

Wow, I expect some issues with some users and likely software issues like Wii U had, something easily fixed with an update but what I don't expect is having a broken console out of the box. Never happened to me, I hope it never happens. Definitely waiting to get a PS4 until these issues are sorted out.

Xenris-

Killzone is epic. So far the story is decent but the gameplay is unreal. The guns are sweet and yeah it actually has some freedom to it. And its beautiful.

The mp, so far is definitely up there as GG bes productions. Its balanced very well and you get the classic feel of KZ2 on top of the fun amd addoctive gameplay with well constructed maps. I also tried out Resogun. That game is an addicting little number. Man its fun. And looks great!

Bigrailer does KZ multiplayer and SP in general feel more like KZ2 than KZ3? Or is MP more weighted and SP more floaty like CoD?

I will probably pick KZ up eventually but money is tight right now so I'm going to wait for that and Knack to get price drops.

I played warframe on the PC and I am really enjoying it on the PS4 it feels really god on the controller. For a free game its loads of fun you should check it out.

Xenris- both feel weightier than KZ3, I think the sp feels a little less weighted though only to accomplish whats being done. Like in the stealth portions of the game needing to take down two enemies at once isnt uncommon and a weighted feeling might hinder that. However if anything its a miniscule difference.

Brother in law's PS4 is DoA, won't even boot so it isn't a failed update. Not a "red line of death", though. Throbbing blue line that never ends. Unfortunately, Amazon is saying it could be quite some time before he can get a replacement.

you'd think after the whole rrod fiasco no manufacturer would release a console that would even show a red shape of any kind during a system failure. just for the simple fact of knowing that it'd turn into an internet trigger phrase in no time flat.
It should be more like how PC motherboards do it. where it makes like Morse code beeps at you. Where you're left wondering, "don't know what those beeps mean, but it can't be good."
And crap. that can't work because it would just be known as the Beeps of Death.
Okay, fine. The console should just laugh at you "Haha sucks to be you because I just died!"
yes, that would work =p

N4G is a community driven website, which means all news stories are posted by our members. Stories must have a valid source, which can be found via the Read Full Story link beneath each story. Instead of just having a handful of staff members N4G has thousands which search the net for the most interesting stories. This way N4G is able to cover many more news stories each day than traditional gaming news site. -N4G

any of us can be a member. any of us can host our own site and self-submit it to N4G! Free advertising!… just like the hottest PS4 story… you know this one being cited right now from the article here. Go Red Dragon go! Go for Broke! Tabloids rule

I cant believe how big this has grown over essentially nothing. Im just going through the manual and it says that all the red light means is the system is getting to hot, that the temperature is elevating. It specifically says turn it off and leave it be for awhile. If people are neglecting this and calling this the red line of death because they ignore the system giving them a precaution thats on them. This is pretty lame.

I camt believe people are neglecting the history of the 360 and on top of it calling the ps4 the failstation 4. Im not ammused by that at all.

I've owned 3 PS3s and 3 Xbox 360s and I never shoved these consoles in a tight spot on the entertainment center. They are always placed on a table with plenty of space for them to breath. It can never overheat that way. Too many people just slap it into a tight space and think nothing will happen. My nephew does have his 360 on a tight shelf but he rarely plays it as much as these video game addicts and his basement is an icebox.

I've had no problems with my PS4. I had it on for about 2-3 hours. I didn't put any disc-based games in it but it is quiet, the build of the machine is solid and I played games such as Flower and Resogun and watched and talked to a guy playing Knack. Even used the Internet browser. Still, my 2 year in-store warranty might come in handy with these launch consoles.

Most of these people "complaining" are angry Xbots who know they have no legs to stand on any longer. The two advantages they had on the 360 (better machine for multiplatform games due to the PC innards and better online capabilities) are gone now. They are stuck with an underpowered machine with a camera and a company in Microsoft that cares more about getting schmucks who don't know that a $299 laptop can be a great social media and entertainment hub to buy an Xbone for that.

Now these Xbots are spamming Amazon, Sony and every other site with their BS because they can't take it that Microsoft have "abandoned" them and their needs. These same guys probably got 3 of their consoles banned because they cheated in some way and 3 more because they treated their console like dirt. Hypocritical. I expect the Xbone to be yet another poorly constructed machine that will have issues as well.

Nothing but a smear campaign from people who refuse to wake up and smell the coffee. Love that they also make no effort to sound professional, either. All caps, spelling errors, terrible use of punctuation and theatrics = bratty and hypocritical kids who will change their tune if people can mod the PS4 in order to steal games. Hell, the 360 was a magnet for piracy.

"Playing too long" shouldn't be a thing for these new consoles. They bill themselves as multimedia devices similar to a PC, and they should be designed with extended use in mind. I'm pretty sure they have been, too, and that 'playing too long' isn't the cause of these problems, whatever they are.

Its not that playing to long is the culprit. Its playing too long amd ignoring the systems warnings. Even in the manual it says a red line appears if temperatures elevate, this is a warning ir precaution to give the system a rest. This doesnt happen in well ventilated areas. This isnt uncommon either as the PS3 and 360 both had overheating problems.

Consumers need to realise how to take care of their things and ignoring essentially what the system is telling you could be a huge deal. It appears people are mistaking the red line as a sign of "death" of the console because they arent seeing it as a tool and continue to play.

I wouldnt doubt it for a second. You combine the heat with extended play and you get failures. Combine that with new anxious consumers and those just looking for problems and this is what culminates.

If you would rather ignore those facts, and give consumers a pass thats fine with me as Im sure there are those unlucky enough to have legitimate issues. But placing all the blame on a system (that technically hasnt been proven faulty) is neither healthy for the industry or responsible.

I'm not blaming it on anything, because the system has been out for less than 2 days. There might not even be anything to blame anyone/anything for, but I really doubt that consumers 'playing too long', even combined with any other factors, is going to be the issue. The 360 was a hot mess when it first launched and even then 'playing too long' wasn't causing failures.

The people having these problems are playing for 6+ hour periods straight, u add that to heat from an enclosed area and/or negligence and im not surprised by these reports at all. You have to factor all this in. Those two things are culrpits in this.

Now just play time and due diligence, well theses issues shouldnt occur.

This is STILL not a problem.

It is just the fear mongering media trying to hype the whole thing up to increase their site traffic.

Combine that with the fact that the console wars are more pathetic then they ever have been, thanks to social media, then yeah, this is not a problem.

I can't wait to see what happens next friday.

Also the PS4 failure rate is STILL at 0.4%

.4 failing in 2 days seems incredibly high. What will that look like in 2 months? I really don't see any reason to be an early adopter. The machines will fail and there is not one must have title that I am aware of that I can t play on my gaming laptop or ps3. Even next year I'll be on dark souls 2 which is ps3.

You are correct. Anyone can post a message claiming their console failed.Come on now fanboys are the most pathetic type of gamers. It goes both ways as the same will happen with the X1. I am not getting an X1, but I will not post messages of having one and it not working either. These people are sad.

i think its getting blown way out of control, over 1,000,000m ps4 consoles sold in 24hrs!,i expect very few to be defective, time wil tell when sony releases accurate defective units, But awesome first day numbers, an they say the console age is dying?

Every electrical product has failures no matter how long they been on the market. I do believe that most of the reports are from trolls. I was reading a review on Amazon of one star and the person claimed that they ordered it on Nov. 14 and it was broke out of the box. That is impossible since Amazon has been sold out of pre orders for months. The fanboys take the issues that some people who actually own the console and make posts about also having the same issue. The general feed back from consumers have been positive and hardware failures have been small. PS3 and PS2 had their share of hardware issues at launch and plenty of Wii Us and 360s were dead on arrival.

There are reports now that someone at Foxconn has been posting in online forums, claiming that some of the process workers were sabotaging PS4's in an attempt to get back at Foxconn for bad working conditions.

People like this, don't deserve freedom.

The problem about these reports, is that that guy was posting in Chinese forums back in August with these claims. And he mentions one of the issues that the consoles will have, is that it won't output to HDMI, which is the biggest problem we are seeing with the PS4 right now.

So this could very well be true.

Not a surprise if they are overheating, very bad cooling and hardware cramped into badly ventilated box...lol. Xbox will probably see the same issues. Might want to think of investing in a PC I can play all I want and it will always run cool & quiet. BTW bigrailer your coming off as a very defensive fanboy..
