Black Flag Director: Next AC Entry Will Be "More Next-Gen"

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a damn good game. But even Ubisoft admits it might not be truly "next-gen."

The game was made for both current- and next-gen consoles, and many gamers don't consider that to be a true-blue example of the new era of gaming. And Black Flag lead designer Jean-Sebastien Decant sort of agrees.

In speaking to GameReactor, Decant said that the most recent entry, despite its size and polish, was "really on the edge" of what "next-gen" means to him:

"I think 'next' next-gen is going to be for the next games. The next games are going to be much more on the next-gen side. This one is really on the edge."

He added that when his team began working on Black Flag, they had no idea what the system specs would be for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Therefore, we can expect a more significant leap forward the next time around, and that will include improvements to the franchise's lauded stealth and combat elements. Decant also said that gaming is going to become more "shared" in the next generation.

Well, that's fine. But I ain't sharin' sh**, thank you.

So, the opposite of what they said prior to release.

ha, yah, but it's to be expected.
This gives me some hope the next AC will ditch the current-gen frame work.

That's nice. Can we have a break though and let Watch_Dogs pad out Ubisoft's sales for next year before seeing AC5 in 2015?

one thing that really has me worried.
how long are developers going to hold onto last gen systems?
no way the next AC will be only for next gen systems its far too big a franchise to kick away 90% of your sales.
so then you have to ask where do you draw the line?
do you create the game for next gen systems than chop and change where need be, or do you keep those restrictions in mind to make your life easier in the long run.
exactly what im worried about developers are too lazy to create content just for next gen, were going to see next gen games held back until developers cut the shackles and dive into next gen only.

clearly....as much as I am enjoying the game, not much about it makes me think I'm actually playing on a next gen console. Same can be said about Ghosts. This was the problem we had with other games with the PS3...they were constantly dumming games down for the 360. The only time I felt as though I had a genuine ps3 game that actually pushed the system to its limit was anything Naughty Dog put out. so long as developers make games that can also go on a lesser system (i.e. ps3, 360)...were not going to see what all the system can do....I don't want to see ps3 support fall by the way side, but I also want to see developers maximizing the PS4.

Yeah it seems like what you've mentioned is closely in line with what __________ said. If what they said is true about not being sure about the final specs of the system then I think it would be difficult to tailor a game to such a particular platform. So going by what others have already remarked, especially with cross-gen platform games is that they're somewhere in the middle where there may be minor visual (resolution may be bumped up to true 1080p) and performance upgrades (smoother transitions between levels and menu, minimal to no loading times without hopefully no or little difference to frame-rate consistency) but nothing very significantly impressive as of yet.

Hopefully though, because the PS3 has been out for a substantial amount of time the developers who've worked most with PS3 whom are well versed with it can allot a bigger team for the PS4 games now and transition completely to PS4 only, in I don't know, 2-3 years from now. Weren't there still PS2 games being made and sold a few years after the PS3 was out, and within a 2, maybe 3 years I don't remember there being very high profile games being released much after that? As an example of this, God of War II was released in March 13, 2007. I think though, we'll start to see more PS4 only as opposed to cross-gen titles starting mid-late next year. Since this has just launched and due to the adoption rate and popularity of PS3 it makes sense to try and not seclude the current largest audience.

I hope there will be more strikingly technical and gameplay improvements next year. There's InFamous: Second Son already on the horizons as well as a few more and quite a few more that haven't publicly even been announced yet. This is still well in it's infancy, so why not consider that and give it some time to mature. :)
