PS4 Was "By Far The Largest Launch" In Canadian Gaming History

Seems our neighbors to the north are big fans of the PlayStation 4.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Canada vice president and general manager Steve Turvey, the launch of the PS4 was the biggest release in Canadian gaming history. As he told GamesIndustry.biz:

"The launch was a huge success by any standard of measurement. It was by far the largest launch in gaming history in Canada, and we were really thrilled by the execution, but mostly the response by PlayStation fans and consumers."

Although they didn't release exact sales figures for the region, we do know that over 1 million units were sold in North America within the first 24 hours. Microsoft's Xbox One releases in Canada on Friday, November 22, and that also has a chance of being the region's biggest game launch. These two consoles are going to continue trying to one-up each other during the holiday season; the big question is, which one comes out on top?

Polls suggest Sony has the edge but we'll have to wait and see.

I wonder if Rob Ford got one so he can enjoy it while he smokes crack.

He probably already sold it on eBay to cover his next week's intake!

@Kryten: He doesn't need to. He'll just steal it from the taxpayers. Ugh.

Money's gone to his dealers before he can get to a best buy, unfortunately.

Hmmmm.... and I know this is bad... really bad, but when he saw "Knack" he may have thought it was... well you know.

Keep playing!

I can't speak for all Canadians by any means, but among my friends, the PS4 is the clear choice. I know at least 3 previous XBots who's joined the Light side of the Force, if you will.

And as a Torontonian, I must grudgingly report that the taxpayers pre-ordered Ford's PS4. In between lawsuits, he's playing Killzone and enjoying pretending to be a neo-fascist Helgast.

Rob Ford at least kept Ottawa and the scandals in the Senate here off of the front pages. Rob Ford has been holding the city of Toronto hostage. He's a disgrace.

My city's mayor is under criminal investigation for using tax payer dollars to fund his son's wedding. He's also had his hand slapped for meeting with some city Councillors behind closed doors prior to a big budget meeting. He, too, is glad Ford is in the spotlight.

Both are both morally abhorrent and should have done the honourable thing and resigned. Thank goodness municipal elections are less than a year away.

HA! I'm in Alberta right now. The only Canadian gamer I know is an absolute M$ Xbox fanboy. Can't wait to send him this news.

I'm from BC where everyone is always smoking weed, so I bet the PS4 sold a lot of units there because they want to see some wonderful visuals. I bet they got as far in the setup as finding out they have $10 to spend on the PSN, going ahead and buying Flower, and then just sitting there chilling with the flora.

The exact number we sold on Friday is 150,000. Now that might not seem like a lot but given our population size compared to USA and for first day numbers that number is amazing. We also should have most stores stocked with PS4 by Thursday night. Cant give MS any advantages.

I am surprised being that I am Sony owner, but have not picked up the PS4 (waiting a year as I said before). Most of the people I know are Xboxers. Only a few have the Sony and even fewer with Nintendo.

We Canadians can be unpredictable at times. Although I suspect the Xbox1 will fair just as well.

Glad the PS4 has gotten off to a good start even with a lackluster game lineup at launch.

Keep playing!

I am Canadian AND... a PlayStation fan! :P

While I do not yet have a PS4 of my own or even demoed one as of yet, I'd most likely be getting one of those before an XBOX ONE. While there have been a few exclusive XBOX 360 games that have interested me and a few have gotten extra DLC that PS3 version hasn't received and probably never will (XBOX Gold / Platinum edition of the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance, I'm looking at you) I haven't been to swayed to own one yet. I would really like those extra 8 Marvel characters.... but anyway. :( I have thought about maybe getting one on occasion as well as a Wii / WiiU for certain classic Nintendo franchises but... I don't know...

Back to the PS4... I definitely do want one, but as I've said I'll likely wait, but I can't say for certainty how long I'll wait. I have had all other PS consoles and still have the PS2 (Slim) as well as the PS3 (Slim, as in 2nd/mid iteration, before the newest model). I also still have some games for the PS2, some I gave away when I upgraded to the PS3 remastered versions and quite a library of PS3 games with a backlog yet unopened nor obtained.

Hope that anyone who has the PS4 is enjoying it very much and has PS3 or anything else to play on that stays healthy until the catalog of games for their choses platforms gets more plentiful and varied.

Later. :)
