PS4 Launch Lineup Reason Enough To Wait On A Purchase?

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to not purchase the PlayStation 4 immediately.

Some people still have plenty of games to play on the PS3. Others just don't have the extra money to spend right now. And maybe a few are scared off by the various and increasing reports of busted systems.

But maybe the biggest reason not to pony up for Sony's next-gen console is the admittedly lacking launch lineup. When perhaps the best game is essentially an old-school arcade shooter with really fancy visuals (Resogun), there's reason to pause. The heaviest hitter, Killzone: Shadow Fall, isn't all it was cracked up to be, and Knack is a definite disappointment in the eyes of many. Everything else is multiplatform and most titles are available for the PS3, anyway. They don't look quite as good, but so what?

I'm not saying Killzone isn't a really solid shooter; I'm saying the PS4 launch lineup really needed some extra spice and "next-gen" quality. inFamous: Second Son really could've helped, and I think we miss Watch Dogs more than we know. That was the one game I really wanted to play on a next-gen console, just because I was convinced it would need the extra power to truly shine. As it stands, we're left with an underwhelming launch software lineup that might make people think twice about a holiday PS4 purchase. "I'm not missing much," they might say.

Then again, PlayStation fans might just get the system 'cuz they know it'll kick ass in the years to come. That indeed may be true. But are you waiting for one particular game on the horizon? Perhaps the new Uncharted...?

It probably is. I was pumped to get mine at the midnight launch and I've already gotten a good bit of use out of it, but there wasn't any reason to pull the trigger right away. Not that that's unique to the PS4; there really any reason to buy a new console until at least six months after launch at the earliest.

True. About it being a lot wiser to wait a while before diving into the next gen.

Every generation you're only supposed to buy a new console to play new games that feel next-gen. Not to play games that feel CURRENT GEN.

It will take time before we even see what the PS4 is really capable of. These launch games are not even the tip of the iceberg of what's to come.

But it will take a little more time.

I definitely miss Watch Dogs. Honestly, I got the PS4 and pre-ordered Watch Dogs PRECISELY to play it on the next-gen console. Now I'm settling for Killzone and AC. But I should mention that a free Resogun and a free Contrast are solid reasons enough for my investment. In retrospect, I could've waited, but I didn't want to. lol

Wait for March: inFamous will ship a lot of units. Meanwhile, I wait for February when Thief debuts!

I was done with PS3 gaming as is and I wanted a PS4 now so I wouldn't have to look for one later. I've played a lot of Resogun, Flower and some Contrast but I am dying for a retail game. I might buy Knack if EB honors this $20 off coupon that was given out at Sony PS4 video game parties. If not, I can live off of my PC game collection; perhaps I'll buy a shooter like Killzone during Black Friday or Boxing Day. I bought the console for the future; not the present.

An honest article, good to see. The PS4 launch line-up is average at best, let's all be honest here. All there is are spruced up multiplats that we can all play on our current consoles, Knack which looks rubbish & Killzone, which is decent at best because there is nothing else, but i suppose anything tastes good when you're starving.

I am really glad i held back on getting a PS4 at launch now. There is still plenty of gaming life left in the good ole PS3 yet for me to even consider leaping to next gen with a new pretty box with nothing decent to play on it. I'd rather save the money until the heavy hitters arrive in force, they will come, we all know they will. When Uncharted 4, The last of Us 2 or the new Metal Gear game start getting close, only then will my body be ready for next gen.

I wanted to get one right away just because I'm a PlayStation fan and that was enough for me to have it. Personally I'm loving killzone online and resogun. I've been playing co-op in Knack and its alright, wish I didn't buy it though.

I felt the same way. Couldn't afford one immediately but wanted to support the brand. But playing GTA is keeping me busy just fine and I don't feel like I'm missing out on any "history being made" moments with my friends.

Besides, BF4 is the game I'd be playing and apparently I'd be waiting for a patch...

Knack is actually loved by the people who bought it. The only people I've seen who have a complaint are the reviewers. Not that I'm defending it, I thought it looked like crap when they revealed it.

And yeah, theres tons left to be had with the ps3. I think until around mid-next year or maybe even later is when more people will start to consider buying a next-gen console.

I have a question Guys, I have the ps4 I can see all of my friends online and what they are doing. I can message them and receive messages, but they cannot see that I am online. The only way they can is if I leave the PS3 logged in. Have I set something up wrong? It seems to me that it wouldn't matter as long as you are logged into the PSN.

I haven't had a lot of time to play the PS4 (hoping to change that this weekend), but I have played about an hour or so of Knack (on hard). I'm enjoying it, but so far it's not as fun as say Ratchet and Clank.

The only other game I've really spent any more time with is Resogun, and it is AMAZING! I love it!

@Huey, it's the same with the Vita. When you're using the Vita you can see everyone that is online but PS3 users can't see if you're online (haven't tried it out with the PS4 yet). I have noticed that while on the PS3, Vita users that are logged into PSN usually get pushed to the very bottom of your friends list, but still show as being offline. It would be nice if your friends list showed which friends were online and with which console they were currently using, regardless of the console you're using.

Shadow of the Colossus HD
Castlevania LotS 2
FFXIII-2
Splinter Cell Blacklist

…that's what comes to mind right off, but I know there's more. THere's ones like Rayman Legends and The Puppeteer I may want to play as well.
I have my constant rotation of classic arcade style games too. They eat a lot of time. Like Fighters, pinball, Daytona USA etc.

I'll want a PS4 once either a VF, Tekken, DOA, or a Ninja Gaiden get's revealed.

Most consumers are not worried about the lack of games. More will be coming and big titles in the next couple of months. Ill be honest and admit there is a lack of first party support right now, however its not like there iant anythibg to play.

And readers beware Killzone will keep any shooter fan occupied for awhile. Its the best shooter available and if you loved past entries, you absolutely want to try this one. Its got the best mp in the series, on top of a solid campaign. If your looking for a realistic, super tight shooter this is it. Oh and no auto-aim, really makes this PS4 controller stand out. GG took full advantage of it, and it controls like a dream and its very precise.

only 2 first party exclusives from the company who owns the largest first party library in the world.
1 a 5/10 game from the creator of playstations best franchises like R&C, J&D, crash bandicoot, spyro.
and the other a 7/10 game in a genre so over flooded it makes the recent tsunamis look like a sun shower!
add ontop of that, 99% of third party offerings were available weeks if not months prior.
add ontop of that all the recent reliability issues be it hardware or software like the BF4 instability issues, or even the PSN stability issues.
if all that is not reason to wait, than nothing is!
only way the ps4s launch could of been worse is if all the third party games got canned!

It simply doesnt have enough titles, I think if Watch Dogs & Drive Club remained it would had enough variety to keep people enticed. Iwas going to get a PS4 with MGS5, but now that has been spliced into two parts I dont know now. Seeign the graphical comparison of Assassins Creed 4 on all consoles, the jump to next gen isnt that huge. I think I will just get Ground Zeroes on PS3 now.

So when will I get a PS4? ... I honestly don't know, if The Phantom Pain comes with a special edition packed with Ground Zeroes, maybe. The only other title I am interested in so far is Final Fantasy XV... but considering that games development history I wont hold my breath... A rough estimate I think will be early 2015 when I buy the console. I have Lightning Returns, FFX & X-2 HD, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 and my Wii-U to tide me over.

Im not sure whats going on but the consumer like myself is seeing a lot more accomplishments in these games than the reviewer is. I can go to amy store today and 90% of anyone who has played either will praise it. Thats the way it is. I do mot know why.

bigrailer: I'm the first to say when I see critics failing to honor a good game. RAGE is a great example of that. And I love PlayStation, and I'm excited for a new generation, just like everyone else.

There is a reason the games are scoring the way they're scoring. That's all there is to it. The people in the stores are likely blinded by the arrival of the PS4; reviewers aren't allowed to be blinded by anything.

See I cant agree with that. Im glad that reviewers cant be over excited. The problem is both Knack and KZ reviews are all over the dang place. The variance in both leaves reviews very questionable. Im not arguing that KZ should be getting low 8's as your score provided. I personally think its a high 8 but an 8 is an 8. Im not however going to agree with the game having scores ranging from 50 to 90. 15 reviews have scored it between 50 and 74. How is that indicative of anything? Those cant be considered outliers because of the abundance (almost 50%)

I also am the first to say when a game deserves or disserves credit. Im a huge CoD fan, I love the series, Ive played and bought every one of em since 3. But Ill be the first to say the series is heading in a downward trend that started with MW2. I also am a huge Killzone fan probably bigger than a fan of CoD. I stood up for KZ3 the best I could however I couldnt argue that it was a step backwards. It derserves its 84 on metacritic. But KZ Shadowfall is by far better than KZ3 in every way. The only thing lacking is huge voice talent but that obviously doesnt make a story better and they realised that in Shadow Fall. Every complaint the reviews had in KZ3 has been corrected.

I dont think users are somehow jaded by the PS4's release. I think they realise what they have and thats an improvement in the series and worthy release title for the PS4. The same goes for Knack. Its got a nostalgic feeling that users appreciate.

The story in Shadow Fall is absolutely not better than KZ3. And the AI is a BIG step back. That's first.

Second, I already told you- Reviews always range like that. Or almost always. You just don't look at them all the time. Uncharted review scores ranged between 70 and 100. Saying that Knack ranges between 50 and 80 means nothing.

Only on rare instances is there consensus across the board, and even that consensus will have outliers, like Game Informer's 8.25 for Knack. You also make it sound like the critics aren't clear. They're very clear. Every last review I've read of Killzone essentially says the exact same thing, which is that it doesn't really FEEL next-gen, and that there are obvious glaring faults, such as the crappy AI, lackluster story, and segments that, while trying something new, come up short in the execution department.

The scores vary more than the actual reviews. If you read them, you'd know that.

Well lets juat clear one thine up. The scores for KZ range from 50 to 90. And the scores for Knack range from 30 to in the 80's. Thats just rediculous and never that spread out. Only when there is an outlier but not a consistant progression. 70 to 100 for Uncharted is reasonable that spread is far less and also the favorable reviews are the majority its not as progressive as Knack or KZ.

So far the story is not worse than KZ3. KZ3's story as much as I hate to admit it, was full of letdowns and holes and at the very end, really? No conclusion. As far as the AI well I suppose I can agree but that doesnt translate to whats happening

Also the reviews are anything but consistant Ive read the majority of them and when reviewers cant agree on the weighty feeling the game, sorry thats a red flag. One reviewer said this is the most weightless in the franchise while another says its as weighty as KZ2. Obviously the latter is more precise. Others are saying its mp is equivelant to anything on the market at the very least while others are saying its far worse than anything available. Thats more opinion but the former is probably more accurate. And even more considerable is the control. Most of the reviews elude the controls in particular however most agree the gameplay and implementation of the DS4 is brilliant. The higher scores are all saying the gameplay is exceptional. Many of the higher scores are agreeing getting rid of the auto aim was a plus and praising the preciseness of the controls. That can be read any many of the top reviews.

Regardless im not downing your review, im not downing the aggregate review, imsaying these reviews from lowest to highest are not indicative of what the game truly brings to the table. Same for Knack.

I just have to chime in here.

Cause being a metascore whore I slavishly read the background for the metascores - even for games I have no interest in, sometimes even for platforms I don't own. I just think it's interesting.

And Ben is right in what he say here. The range between the highest and the lowest score for any given game is usually quite the gap, especially on those who end up with midrange metascore (I'd call 50-80 roughly midrange). One can usually find a focal point, but there's *always* quite a frew that strays off that focal point, in both directions.

Also, slightly off topic but another very interesting detail is that the highest ratings are usually coming from the earliest published reviews. One can only speculate why it is like that - I have no good theory but I do observe that this often is the case.

Neither of you are grasping that for these games there is not a "few" that are outliers. Its a very progressive range of scores. While most games agreeably will always have a few eother higher or lower this is different.

Ben saod yesterday there were no variances in the review scores however last I checked KZ had 15 reviews from 50 to 74. 6 of them were below a 65. Then another 16 from 75 to 90. If thats not a variance I dont know what is.

Knack is even far worse. Its almost as if you could count from 30 - 85 without skipping a nunber.

The problem is that you're including obvious outliers in your argument. You say Knack averages between 30 and the 80s. That's not even close to accurate; you might find ONE review of Knack that's at a 3 and ONE that's in the 8s. Certainly no more than two or three on either side. The vast majority of all scores sit in the 5-7 range.

That is normal.

Killzone is exactly the same way. Not sure why this is so hard to figure out. There is no conspiracy here, bigrailer. The games in question simply aren't as good as they should be, and that's that. Let's just accept it, while we also accept that this is the first few DAYS of a new generation. Obviously, things will get better.

Is part of it expectation?

Some reviewers may see pop up or screen tearing or something similar and grade harshly for it whereas other might?

Also some reviewers may compare the titles to previous generations and some may not? If you review a sequel and it's technically better than the predecessor do you grade it a higher score, even though you are comparing it to a game on a lower specification game? Or do you view it cleanly and objectively based on it's own stand alone merits and flaws?

I was gonna get my Ps4 day one. But after doing a few list especially a game list with all cross-gen games going on my Ps3 i've decided to wait. That plus my backlog and all the broken systems made me glad i decided to wait. Im hoping for a infamous second son Ps4 bundle to get my Ps4.

I must be easy. I love the PS4 and the 5 games I bought for it.

I will wait on buying the Xbox one because of MS lying so much about spying and connect kind of worries me.

The PS4 landscape is kind of bare right now the do have a few nice free games on there if your a plus member mine worked fine right out the box.

One game I have really liked is Knack simple fun like the old Mario days I guess

Injustice is a Mortal K redo clone but still fun. AC if you own it on PS3 you can upgrade
to the 4 for under 10 bucks and some others COD and MW. Like most of you guy's my old fat3
is still running strong so I will bounce back n forth between the 2 and picking up bargains from the sale offs of the old stuff by new tech jumpers.

All this is just my 2 cents on this nothing less or more.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. If GT6, Beyond, even TLoU and GoW: Ascension were PS4 exclusives, then people would have complained that Sony was ignoring the 80 million PS3 console owners.

All estimates seem to indicate that supply of the new console will be tight enough as is with the current offering of 1st and 3rd party games available. Once initial demand eases in late winter/early spring, we'll see another wave of new titles to drive more console sales.

Okay, THAT is not true. PS3 owners know they've had a great run and all PlayStation fans would've been OVERJOYED to have some of those games for the PS4.

With the exception of one or two people that visit this site who always seem to find the negative aspects of any Sony/PlayStation news (on a site that is ironically geared towards PlayStation fans and I think we all know who I'm referring to), I'd agree with you. I really don't think that too many "PlayStation" fans would mind, and I probably should have worded it "...'some' people would have complained..." as we're always going to see some cynics; however, in the general gaming press, I'm sure we would have seen articles earlier this year about the decided lack of AAA PS3 exclusives. A quick google check, shows that the lack of X360 exclusives for 2013 was covered by a couple of sites such as lazygamer.net and examiner.com as much as 12 months ago. Were there more or should there have been more coverage of that? Probably. If Sony was missing those games I listed, I have no doubt that we would have seen many articles about the lack of PS3 exclusive titles this year (in the general gaming media). It is ironic that had Ryse, Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 been released on the X360 instead of for the X1, the PS3 would have still had more AAA releases this year than the 360. Microsoft gambled on focusing their resources on X1 titles at the expense of 360 and the media let them off easily. Sony gambled on focusing their resources on PS3 titles and it left them short on exclusive AAA PS4 launch titles. Did MS get a pass because the 360 has been out a year longer than the PS3? Perhaps.

The second point of my original entry still holds true: the lack of game exclusives at launch will not hurt PS4 sales. Sony will still probably be selling every PS4 they can make well into January, and they still have to launch in Japan too. They probably didn't even change their sales projections for their fiscal year-end.

I think it's worth it but I seem to be enjoying Knack more then others. I think one game that's not getting any attention that I feel should is Warframe. What an addicting game! Boy, I've been having fun with it!

Granted Warframe has been out for a few months on PC, but as you pointed out, it certainly isn't being given the same attention as some of the other games available at launch.

Yep, my PS3 is still full of entertainment.

Games lineup is a big issue for me for the PS4. I waited a year for the PS3 and the library was just starting to have a variety, be it Heavenly Sword, Resistance and Tools of Destruction along with some other games.

The other thing is cost. Right now I cannot justify the purchase to be a part of my entertainment. The PS3 is still offering a number of games, which I know over short time will dwindle.

I will most likely wait for the second gen version of the PS4 when hopefully the library has expanded and the kinks are pretty much out of the PS4.

Of and as for Titanfall... no loss to Sony. Sony has variety .. or will , where as Xbox focusses mostly on FPS. Well that is how it looks through the press releases.

Anyway.... Keep playing!

While I will agree the "whole" lineup was weak, I highly disagree that Killzone wasn't what it was cracked up to be, IMO the game is super solid and well designed. Do you want to see your console shine? Get this game. Stop supporting COD's Rip and Paste ways of doing business and support dev's that really are trying.

I think it's joint 1st for me.

I'm still loving my existing catalogue and so I decided to wait.
However, if I had seen a couple of long life single player launch games for the PS4 that may have persuaded me to order one and just wrestle with the problem of having 3 consoles set up. Maybe the 360 would have been boxed and sent upstairs..

I'm still very happy with the launch line-up - it's better than we had for the PS3, PS2 or PS1 (in Australia). The thing to remember is that it's a _launch_ line-up. It's always going to be the weakest time for software of any new platform. The fact we're all seeing it as so weak, just goes to show how strong the PS3's library is (you know, the console that people were saying had no games well into 2010/11 ;)).

I'm grabbing a PS4 at the Australian launch next week because I'm interested in playing BF4 with 64 players, in the social and sharing options, and in Killzone, Knack and WAR THUNDER. Plus, the frame rate and visuals of all the cross-gen games are significantly better on PS4 (BF4 MP is almost a completely different game). Sure, they'd be fun on PS3, but gaming is audio-visual. Better visuals do mean better gaming.

That said, I'm keeping my PS3 around, and expect it to get as much use as the PS4 until around the middle of next year. It's highly unlikely the price of the PS4 will drop by then (or that I'll invest the $400 US/$550 Aus elsewhere and make a mint, lol), so spending it now gives me the early experiences and a chance to feel the platform grow from it's first days, which is always an interesting (although often buggy) experience :).

It's just a case of people deciding what's important for them. Most importantly, only get a machine when there are enough games they want. No one should feel bad for not getting a PS4 or XB1, or bad for getting it, if they're honest with themselves about what they want and what they're getting :).

When I pick up a PS4 I believe the first couple of pick up(s) would be Madden 25 or either NBA Live or 2K14(I've always got a sports game when I pick up a playstation system PSone NBA Shootout '97, PS2 NHL 2002,PSP one of those Madden bundles and PS3 NHL and NBA Live 08.)

But the one game I want is Second Son, that game looks fun and quick question will the moral system be in this game as well?
