What Will Be The First "System Seller" For The PlayStation 4?

If you don't yet own a PlayStation 4, is there one particular title you're waiting on? What's the first true "system seller" you see on the horizon?

There are always a few titles in the first year of a new console's launch that a lot of gamers are waiting for; I remember it was Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec for the PS2. When that sucker exploded onto the scene in 2001, millions jumped on Sony's new system. For the PS3, one could make the argument that it was maybe Heavenly Sword or Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Others waited even longer for hugely anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

What might it be for the PS4? Gran Turismo 7? We're not even sure that'll debut on the PS4, although we'd like to assume it will. Uncharted 4? Sure, that makes sense; it could be ready to go for the 2014 holiday season. There's inFamous: Second Son, which really should've been available for the system's launch. Or maybe you're waiting on a new God of War or something like that. These days, however, system sellers can and often are third-party titles, just because they can be so massive. So, maybe a game like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Thief will persuade you to join the new generation. Destiny is another interesting option.

So, which is it for you?

for PSX it was Resident Evil
for PS2 it was GT3
for PS3 it was MGS5
I have no idea what it'll be for PS4. maybe Uncharted. Infamous has never held enough praise or respect to draw in the crowds so I have a hard time banking on that.
The new Metal Gear is a trans-gen multiplat so it doesn't really count.
I guess that Order 1886 game is a wildcard.

pretty sure GT3 released many months before FFX and it probably sold several million more than FFX to boot.

EDIT: The soft system seller that preempted GT3 was Twisted Metal Black.

In terms of increased hardware units sold, it was definitely GT3, mostly because of that GT3 PS2 bundle that sold like mad.

But from personal perspectives, it could've been almost ANYTHING. 2001 was one of the finest years in gaming history; in addition to FFX, GT3 and Twisted Metal: Black, there was MGS2, Red Faction, Onimusha: Warlords, ICO, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto III, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, etc. And that was just on the PS2!

Those PS2 games you mentioned bring back some truly memorable moments. I don't think any console is ever going to release the amount of quality the PS2 did in 2001 alone. What a time it was.

Coah! Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 & Silent Hill 2 on the same year... no wonder why the PS2 sold so well, while 2013 has been the best year this gen, it still doesn't come close to that.

I don't see any yet and not in the foreseeable years to come either, third party titles don't really count because they aren't selling any specific system. As Temjin said inFamous isn't even popular.

In the end what might make the PS4 a system seller is the overall fact that the games have higher resolution.

I see your argument about multiplats not counting, but I don't agree.

When most important releases are multiplat they should be a good push for the best machine to play those multiplats on. And with the recent news about where they are running natively in full HD, that machine is clearly the Playstation 4.

So with this new generation multiplats are now our friends. And omg how I love that. The tables are just so wonderfully turned.

And yet I bet CoD and Battlefield sell better on Xbox.

Though I think Metal Gear Solid V, although multiplat, could be considered a system seller cuz Playstation fans care about it. Though we have to consider they may just get it for PS3.

Yeah well when it comes to multiplayer games there is one factor that really dictates what platform to buy a game for more than anything else: What platform you find your friends on.

Pretty much, but now that Metal Gear is on the Xbox Inconsistency it seems to devalue the anticipation a little. I'd be willing to bet XV will become multi-platform. But as far as games that I see myself buying next gen for they're are the big twosome.

Depending on when it's released my guess would be Uncharted 4. Anything Naughty Dog will shift consoles in large numbers alone.

An MGS PS4 bundle would definitely reel people in too i think.

if u think about it from a exclusive stand point infamous second son, unchartered or GT7 might do it but yeah maybe and exclusive contented 3rd party games like watch dogs, destiny or maybe the witcher 3 like u said it's hard to say though with peoples tastes being different but i think it could be any of the games i mentioned above will be systems seller for different people and it could be one or a couple and or a few games that i mentioned. but it will be interesting to see what game triggers the first big surge in sales.

happy gaming =)

There's no real big exclusives in the horizon I consider to be essential. It's unfortunate, it would have been sweet for Sony to have a game like Titanfall, the "talk of the town", to pull gamers with.

Infamous does look sweet but unless I find a good bundle/trade-in deal I *might* wait until one of the really interesting titles arrives: Watch Dogs, The Witcher, Thief... That's the ones that will make me anxious to move my gaming back to the big screen and surround system of the living room.

I'd seriously buy a machine for that game only. One game, one machine, one man, all Fallout.

Fallout 4 would be the biggest system seller appeal for me, too. Hell, if somehow MS bought off Bethesda, I'd buy a shitty Xbox One just for Fallout 4. That is to say, if it weren't also at least PC.

But if I didn't already have a PS4 (and I do have one), and had no plans to get one, but Fallout 4 was coming out on PS4, then BOOM, I'm buying a PS4. lol

I definitely bought my PS1 for FFVII (and found MGS along the way) I bought by PS2 for FFX (and happened to love the MGS games there as well) I bought the PS3 because the first 2 consoles were amazing - and now I love Sony. Unfortunately FFXV wont force me to get a PS4 - not in its current state of looking like an action game not unlike Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (which I couldn't play past the 1st level because it was nothing like the previous titles)

I think for me personally it would be inFamous:Second Son. Uncharted will be a definite seller as well - it's one of the best franchises, but they are going to have to get back to the greatness of UC2.

Could the true system seller be a feature/app rather than a game? With twitch and ustream working out of the box, many popular youtube/social media personalities have already taken to using the twitch tv feature on the PS4. Heck one guy (with many copycats) has made a kind of talk show out of using the playroom "game". This is after one week. How much longer before other minor (and major) personalities/celebrities (sports, music, and tv), both locally and more widely known, find out how easy it is to stream gameplay and use it as another avenue to easily interact with their fans. The fact that this feature is now available for PS4 and won't be available on X1 until sometimes in 2014 could be a real boost for the PS4 and the PlayStation brand.

Can't say one game sells me a system. Granted I bought the Xbox, dirt cheap, just so I could play Halo and Halo 2.

Sony... not just one game. Not because it has not even one game to offer that would make me buy it. Yep I would like to buy and play Second Son and Kilzzone.

Its the game library. Its not big enough yet. In a years time or more it will be to offer me a variety of experiences along with stable and polished games to choose from. Also, I want them to get all the bugs out of the manufacturing process and hardware before purchasing.

To be honest I do believe I am not loosing much by waiting a year or more. The games will still be there from launch and spring next year when I the purchase day calls.

I do not need to but it day one, but glad people who did purchase the PS4 today are having fun.

Cheers! and keep playing!

Mirror's Edge or MGS5, whichever comes first.

inFamous 3 is definitely on my radar, but it's not enough on its own for me to drop $400. I'm just not sure it will have the extreme replayability that I'm looking for.

I remember, in the early days of ps3, you were always asking the same question, which game's gonna be ps3 system seller, you even had top 5 list once. But as we all saw, there wasn't any single "system seller", the ps3 grew steadily with top of the line games in broad game genres and beat xbox360 in worldwide sales.
I think same thing is gonna happen with ps4. it will have system sellers in individual genres.

Personally I don't think it will be one, it will be a matter of getting some of the ones that are currently and some that will be available on PS4, waiting 'til they price drop and then maybe waiting until the system gets a reduction in price as well. Unless there's a very good bundle/sale and I've got a few games then maybe I'd pounce on it.

That's what's likely for me anyways. :)

I'll say Infamous SS but ultimately what will REALLY sell PS4 (and other systems) OVERALL will be an EXCLUSIVE that has something that MAY or MAY NOT have been intentional that gamers find ON THEIR OWN that turns the gaming community (and possibly the mainstream media) on its ear.

I would have to say Uncharted and MGSV, unless we're only counting exclusives (shame on you Kojima!).

If that's the case, then definitely Uncharted. Infamous is a great franchise, but I don't think it has the necessary fanbase to make it a system seller.
