Sony: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls Inspired Design Of The PS4
When you really think about it, the social features in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were borderline revolutionary.
In fact, Sony cited the two critically acclaimed titles as inspiration for the PlayStation 4 design. Speaking during a recent PlayStation Blog podcast, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said the innovative social aspects found in From Software's gems helped the company create a socially-oriented PS4:
"Lots of things these games (Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls) did, like leaving the message to other people asynchronously, so you feel connected but not really connected at the same time...all of these things inspired us when we were designing the system features for PS4."
Yoshida added that the games in question "still have a special place" in his memory, and he said that Dark Souls is his second-favorite game of the generation behind the widely praised Journey. Social integration is definitely a major highlight of the new PlayStation; there's the Share button on the Dual Shock 4 that lets you share game content with friends, and that's hardly the only new socially-oriented feature.
Of course, using the PS4 is a darn sight easier than getting through either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. And thank goodness for that.
