Sony: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls Inspired Design Of The PS4

When you really think about it, the social features in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were borderline revolutionary.

In fact, Sony cited the two critically acclaimed titles as inspiration for the PlayStation 4 design. Speaking during a recent PlayStation Blog podcast, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said the innovative social aspects found in From Software's gems helped the company create a socially-oriented PS4:

"Lots of things these games (Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls) did, like leaving the message to other people asynchronously, so you feel connected but not really connected at the same time...all of these things inspired us when we were designing the system features for PS4."

Yoshida added that the games in question "still have a special place" in his memory, and he said that Dark Souls is his second-favorite game of the generation behind the widely praised Journey. Social integration is definitely a major highlight of the new PlayStation; there's the Share button on the Dual Shock 4 that lets you share game content with friends, and that's hardly the only new socially-oriented  feature.

Of course, using the PS4 is a darn sight easier than getting through either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. And thank goodness for that.

The franchise is something to absolutely love. You die and you die and in between deaths you cannot help but laugh at the different ways that you can face death. It easily became my favorite franchise from last generation.

Or going to the grassroot garden and getting invaded by two players like 45 seconds after you head down the stairs and then you run into the grassroot garden and you can have literally 4-5 characters just chopping you up lol

I love these games. Can't say enough about them, but I can understand the ire of some gamers that they draw. And, he's spot on, the messaging system really does make you feel like you're connected to other people while at the same time leaving you feeling utterly alone as well. I can kind of see where he's coming from with saying the social features were inspired by these games. You get the messages of your friends' activities in the "What's New" section so that you feel like you're in a big community of your friends while at the same time being by yourself to play the games they do and see if you can accomplish the same things and whatnot. Sort of like taking the trophy system up a notch while leaving it in place too.

I learned to like Dark Souls more than I did before. Demons Souls is much better but wow did both games have such intense replay value. I am still making new characters in both games and playing through it always learning something new. If any game needs to stay alive its the Souls series. There is literally nothing like it out there.

Demon's Souls is the most difficult ps3 game that I've played.. I've felt more frustrations than enjoyment when I played that game..

Demons Souls was a normal challenge, Dark Souls it's the unfair one imo.

Saw Sony and Demon's Souls in the title and quickly thought that they'd bring back the ip and try to compete with fromsoft.

DISAPPOINTED.
