Guerrilla On Killzone: Shadow Fall's Graphical Prowess

There's no doubt that Killzone: Shadow Fall is a technical tour de force.

But exactly how much improved is the PlayStation 4 launch title when compared with its predecessor, which was on the PS3? Well, the visual leap is pretty drastic, actually.

During a recent Eurogamer interview, lead environment artist Kim van Heest talked about the difference in the number of building blocks:

"For a scene – what we call a section – on the PlayStation 3, we’d have a maximum of 7000-8000 building blocks and now we’re seeing that on PS4 that we’re pushing 26,000 building blocks. We’d have two LOD steps for these elements, now we have seven LOD steps."

That's especially significant considering just how amazing the last two Killzone games looked. They were already amazingly impressive; Guerrilla just used the added power of the PS4 to make the latest entry even more impressive. There are indeed some very attractive set pieces in Shadow Fall, and we say it's a slightly better game than the critical average of 73 indicates. If that game isn't an 8, not much is.

Yeah i think the game is beautiful!!! Pretty much every game i've played on the ps4 looks extremely good!!! BF4 runs smooth as all get out (aside from the online glitches), Fifa is gorgeous and kz is amazing. The gameplay isn't extremely impressive but it's still worth playing for sure. I also believe it deserves at least an 8.

Game looks beautiful but. Has anyone else noticed most of the NPCs don't blink and they just give you the cold stare of death? This can best be seen when you go through the security gate right before the terrorist attack. Also there is the no reflections in the spaceship mirrors.

As I've mentioned before in this site's review, even though it's a decent game, you can just see flaws that could've been fixed or done better, had it not be a launch title.

I've said it as well. It just throws me off that one moment you're in awe of a level and the next you have these really shitty looking textures or terrible rain effects. The RAIN! My GOD THE RAIN! It's just bad... it looks like a bunch of white lines falling from the sky.

I'm not sure what they mean by step," but putting more into LOD (Level of Detail as noted above), is basically just rendering more details on 3D surfaces (ex: increase poly count/textures/etc.).

Gran Turismo 6, which I believe is the FIRST console game to utilize a next generation LOD methond, known as adaptive tesselation, is the latest technology in "continuous" LOD, as oppose to discrete or "static." I believe adaptive tesselation will be something that's more common as we get further into the PS4/Xbone generation.

I was totally stuck on a "Line Of..." association, ("line of sight") trying to figure out what the heck D could stand for. "Line of.... D.... D.... *hmmmm*".

Yeah, I don't understand a lot of critics out there.

I've been looking at Forza 5 lately. I have no idea how that game looks anywhere near as "pretty" and "next gen" as people (critics) make it out to be. One critic calls it, "Impossibily Good Looking"... good gracious.

well that is interesting know and i was expecting an improvement with all the added horse power, oh more power so gud yeah haha um but yeah i wud have have been surprise if i was a significant improvement with all that ps4 power.

thats nice.
no one cares how this compares to the ps3, its on a brand new frigging system of course its going to be significantly better!
what people care about is how the final game compares to the reveal trailer, and as pretty much every next gen game so far, the answers not well.
just seems a little coincidental that developers have been harping on about not knowing what next gen specs would be until very recently, they announce the games in trailer form, and now all of a sudden that were getting gameplay, and later the games finally out, it looks significantly worse!
wonder why that is.............
