Sony: PlayStation 4 Lifespan May Be A Little Shorter Than PS3

Sony has often said that each console - including the PlayStation 4 - is a "marathon and not a sprint."

However, how long will this particular marathon be? The PS3/360 generation was long, one of the longest in the industry's history, so maybe the freshly released console won't have quite the same lifespan.

Sony UK boss Fergal Gara believes that in fact, the next-gen cycle might be a little shorter:

"I think there's reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK. It's probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit."

At the same time, such a prediction shouldn't be written in stone, as Gara added that it's too early to tell what the future will hold. He says Sony will have a "much better feel for it" once once they're a few months down the road. Don't forget that new contenders such as Valve (the Steambox is coming) might also have an impact on the length of the next-gen lifespan. But the initial response to the PS4 has been solid:

"What we do know is that the uptake [of the PS4] is going to be very sharp. Does that mean this is going to be a much bigger cycle? Maybe. Or it might mean that it's just a bit more compressed into the first few years, that the latter years are a little softer."

I hope the PS4 is close to this cycle. My wallet can't take a 4-5 year cycle.

This gen lasted too long for my taste. 5-6 years sounds about perfect.

Agreed, I can't see it lasting past six and even six years is going to be stretching it given advancements that will happen over that time.

As long as the console is $399 or thereabouts every new cycle, I'm fine with it.

I agree. I'm cool with a new console every 6-ish years as long as there's a $399 model.

These boxes are consumer electronics meant for the mass market. They will never be priced too high.

yeah it's hard to day when another playstation system might pop up i'd say give it 4-7 years myabe 5 or 6 as an average but it won't be nearly as long as the ps3 gen.and whenever the ps5 decides to show up i'll get it and beyond to the ps6 and ps7 on how ever man other ones come along in my life time. and say long as the price is agreeable i'll be down with a new model in say 5 or 6 years like the two above mentioned.

happy gaming =)

of course this generation will be allot shorter, the systems are nowhere near the leap forward previous systems were!
ps3 came out and PCs couldent dream of competing with it, hell the ps3 was such a leap forward the US air force bought ps3s instead of IBMs overpriced 25000 dollar blade servers!
which is what everyone speculates why $ony removed linux support, IBM was very unhappy about this which is obvious considering how much money it was costing them.
now, well, its a whole other kettle of fish.

both manufactures are going to be in trouble if they dont have new systems ready in say 5 years time.
probably even less with the rate that technology is moving.
the new introduction of 20nm chips, steambox and other competitors, 4 or even 8K resolutions, virtual reality, and so on.

I wouldn't necessarily be upset if a new console was available in five years, or surprised to learn they were working on one in 3-4, but coming out and saying, "We'd like you to spend $500 on our new console... just don't expect it to last too long; that last one was a fluke" doesn't install a whole lot of confidence in the new generation. Might as well just say, "Please buy a PS4, to invest in PS5 R&D."
