PS4 Generating More Interest Than Xbox One In The UK

Europe has always appreciated the PlayStation brand.

After the PS4 launched in the UK, early reports indicate very strong sales and a high level of consumer interest. In fact, as reported by The Telegraph, retailer GAME has stated that demand for PS4 pre-orders was "four times higher than it had seen for the PS3."

Again, it helps that Sony actually had systems to sell at launch this time around, but even so, that's impressive. Amazon UK has predicted the PS4 will become the fastest-selling game console in their history, outstripping the current record-holder: Xbox One. However, the UK's high street retailers are betting on the Xbox One to edge out the PS4 over the next month. Currys category director for consumer electronics Phil Samuels said that thus far, "Xbox is nudging into the lead."

Even so, the PS4 currently holds the top spot on Amazon's PC and Video Gamers pre-order chart, and it's also #1 on the "Most Wished For" list. It'll definitely be a competitive race but word on the street - not the high street - is that the PS4 might end up being more popular.

Not sure exactly what you're saying here, but yeah, UK and US was and is dominated by Xbox 360 past generation, so it's surprising to me, that the PS4 has not only match, but somehow surpass, even if slim.

I would really like to know where this incredible swing has come from. I mean, we all guessed that it would happen but most of us here at PSXE would be expected to considering... well, we're here because we're fans of PlayStation. Was it the XBO's mixed messaging? The power differential? Something else entirely?

Perhaps in a nation with so many CCTV's in public areas, Brit's just want to have one place (ie. their own home) where they're not constantly on camera.

The Xbox was never that popular. Just was in a good position last generation. The X1 has no advantages this time around and PS3 proved which brand was superior. I expect each console to deliver what their predecessor did last generation. We know which one came out as the better gaming console.

I agree with DarthNemesis,PS3 was allready better selling than the 360[1 ! year ahead].
Plus i would like to ad the fact that the first punch is the best;the bad policies, that gave a big media buzz so that even much casual gamers did hear of it and turned to ps4!

Some friends of mine who are at best very casual gamers, thought that the Xbone was "better" than ps4. (The power of mass marketing to the uninformed masses)
I set that right very quickly!

I'd have to say my experience with the casual gaming crowd (comprised of friends and relatives) is that people still remember the bad press that MS got "earlier in the year" (E3)...now they don't necessarily remember what the bad press was about, just that something wasn't quite right about it.
At least in Canada, while I have seen both MS and Sony ads, it seems that Sony for once has spent some money on advertising a PlayStation product. MS hasn't been spending on Xbox to the likes they have in the past. One wonders if their ad budget is now having to be split between their Xbox and Windows Phone divisions.

While Europe was always pro-PS3, the UK was strongly pro-X360 last gen, so this is a big swing (not unlike in the US). I think it's a fair swing, however - from a gaming perspective, the XB1 costs more for less, I can see it getting into the rotation at my place as a second console down the track when it's a bit cheaper, but if you have to choose between the two, I'd find it very hard to recommend the XB1 over the PS4 to someone who was getting it for gaming (not counting motion gaming, of course).

Not sure how great the source data is but this article:
http://www.product-reviews.net/2013/12/02/ps4-uk-launch-results-are-in/

states that the ps4 has sold approx 250,000 units compared to 150,000 xbox one's in the first 48hrs in the UK - that's an extra two thirds!
