Man Tries To Sell A PlayStation 4, But Ends Up Getting Shot

We were hoping that with the greatly increased availability - as opposed to previous system launches - that no such tragedies would exist.

But you just can't stop humans from doing unbelievably stupid and evil things. As reported by the San Jose Mercury News, a man was shot dead in San Francisco's Bayview District during a proposed PlayStation 4 sale.

The 22-year-old man arranged to meet a prospective buyer of the PS4; when that happened the suspect shot the victim multiple times while he was still in his car with his girlfriend. The victim apparently gave up the system willingly, but that obviously wasn't enough to stay alive. Said Lt. Tim Plyer:

"I don't know that it's unique to PlayStation or anything else. People do robberies, and I don't know why this one transpired, but we'll do all that we can to investigate it."

Unique to PlayStation? ...what does that even mean? Don't blame the cop, though; based on the way that statement is worded, it sounds like someone asked him if the crime was "unique to PlayStation." Leave it up to mainstream journalists to ask such an idiotic question. Anyway, if anyone has any information on the case, they're encouraged to call the police department's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444, or send a tip via text to TIP411 with "SFPD" in the message.

That's terrible to hear. Crazy stuff happens in the city sometimes but the Bayview Hunter's Point area is one of the lowest income area's in the Bay Area. I have to wonder if the seller was a local or if he was from somewhere like Marin or something and didn't know the demographic and statistics.

One of the commenters on the story linked to, mentioned that you can even do the exchange in the lobby of an SFPD precinct. A legitimate buyer wouldn't balk at that but this shooter obviously had no intention of "buying".

This is an outrage! Yet humanity never ceases to amaze me. No words for the lowlife that committed this horrendous crime but the following, I hope you get caught, rot in jail then rot in hell. I believe in second chances, rehabilitation and all that but this is an absolute disregard for human life.
For those who consider such transactions please be more than mindful. This person made himself into too easy a target.

Well that's a tragic. What a shame anytime of year, but also with the holidays drawing closer, elevates it just a tad more. While I would really like one, personally I certainly feel I can wait however long it takes.... I don't think a PS4 or any other piece of hardware/software for that matter is worth killing or dying over. It's very sad.

Yeah, this kind of thing is partly why I usually just give (or would consider selling, but usually give) something I don't intend to keep anymore to an interested and trusted friend or family member first. Someone I really don't think would even think about robbing me and certainly not harming me for it and someone who I would think would respect me/it and keep it as mint as possible.

I hope this tragic turn of events helps people who are willing to sell/trade something with strangers especially, to be much more mindful and cautious about whom, where and when they consider doing such things. Yeah if there is for sure such thing as karma, I hope it pays whomever is responsible a visit for doing something with such disrespect and disregard by seriously harming or taking another's life not only from that particular person, but also the effect is has on the deceased's circle of family/friends/pets/acquaintances/anyone who cares about this.

Later. :(

The PS4 is now evidence in relation to a murder. If that machine goes online it MUST be tracked. I hope they have the paper trail that will lead to the serial number of the system if the criminal is stupid or blatant enough to connect it.

^^^ It could've been that or the fact that there have been several robberies reported in the media where the PS4 was involved.

Case in point: Kotaku reported of two incidents where people who bought a PS4 were robbed soon after they walked out of the store (a Best Buy & a GameStop).

And more recently (Dec. 1st), a couple of hoodlums robbed a GameStop and came out with nine PS4's in tow.

I hope the guy that got killed had activated his PSN on the PS4 as some given point before deciding to sell it. If so the next time that mac address pops up with his or another PSN account on it, they can track this bastard down and arrest him.

A receipt would do the trick. No excuses. If the NSA and whoever can track and read our emails then there is no way this system can't or shouldn't be tracked. It would be a failure of the justice system in my eyes.

That's heartless... >:( He already gave up the system and still shot him?
And "unique to play station"? If someone still has the balls to play media fanboyism, then he's no better than the criminal.

It's media cluelessness not media fanboyism. I doubt that the reporter who asked that stupid question could even tell what a Playstation looked like.

People think I'm crazy, but this is why I don't use craigslist to invite people I don't know into my home to try to make a few bucks.

You never know if they'll buy something and leave or kill you and take what they like.

Yup, I'm paranoid.

sad and all, but how stupid do you have to be to do this in the first place?
i mean your going to meet a stranger in the middle of nowhere, and im guessing this was in the middle of the night?
im sorry but the guy deserved to get shot if hes that stupid!
learn from the lesson kiddies, if you want to deal with people you dont know do it in a busy well lit area in the middle of the day.
common sense really!
but as my boss would say, sadly, common sense, like customer service, and common curtsey, is one extinct human trait these days..........
the more time goes on, the more we turn into the barbarians who gave birth to us!

The Bayview district is notoriously trashy and dangerous. Sad story, but not shocking.
