Report: PS4 Will Be This Generation's "Leading System"

Sony's PlayStation 4 is off to a good start.

The manufacturer announced that 2.1 million units had been sold in the first two weeks of the console's existence, making it the best PlayStation platform launch in history.

But according to a DFC Intelligence report (cited by GamesIndustry.biz), it's not only the best launch in PlayStation history, it's also the single best console launch in all of gaming history. That 2.1 million number easily outstripped the previous record-holder, the Nintendo Wii, which sold 1.6 million in its first two weeks. One distinction- The PS4 was available in North America and Europe in those first two weeks, while the Wii was available in Japan and North America.

The PS2, which went on to become the best-selling game system of all time, sold 1.4 million units in Japan alone when it launched back in March of 2000. DFC Intelligence took it a step further and said the PS4 would be the "leading system of this generation." However, it probably won't be able to top the PS2...it's likely that nothing ever will again.

"The initial success of the PlayStation 4 bodes well for its future. The PlayStation 2 and Wii went on to be the best selling console systems ever. DFC Intelligence does not believe that the PlayStation 4 will surpass those systems but reiterates its forecast that the PS4 will be the number one system of this generation."

Will the PS4 indeed outstrip the Xbox One worldwide? Very likely. How's about in the US? We'll see...

It's such a relief too, with developers focused on the best this time things will go much more smoothly for everyone involved.

I'm not convinced nothing will top the PS2. Wii U is toast and if Xbone momentum falls apart quickly then there could still be rampant PS4 dominance ahead of us. If they grab that casual crowd eventually then we'd have a PS2 situation all over again only with more gamers.

I dunno about the Xbox One falling apart sales wise, World. I can only see that happening if exclusives start to dry up on that system. There will be a massive spike in sales when Halo 5 is released, and for maybe a few months the XBOne will easily outsell the PS4 during Halo hype month.

So long as Sony delivers Uncharted, God of War, Gran Turismo and other new AAA exclusives (most likely new IPs from Quantic Dream and Media Molecule) we'll see a very nice boost in sales, the type that will beat XBOne.

If anything, past purchasing trends show huge spikes in Xbox sales, followed by several months of complete quietness. Playstation systems tend to have steady sales over a long period, with minor spikes for big name game releases.

Basically, do not underestimate or discount the Xbox One. It may not be a big threat to Sony, but it will always be strong competition, enough to keep Sony on their toes and at the top of their game!

See I'm not convinced it certainly WILL be a harsh enemy once the market is being dominated by PS4. MS will still be trying to compete with just a handful of exclusives, sub-par multiplats, and Kinect games nobody wants. They did well last time because they could from the top of the sales heap, from the bottom they have no place to go but down and PS4 has no place to go but up.

I'm certain the Xbox will be a strong competitor also this upcoming generation. But the winners from that competition will be us, the gamers.

I should say I don't think Xbox One will "fall apart" but after the rollout I'm thinking it will hit a sales ceiling in the next 2-3 years and not advance much from there. They have a strategy that needs to be more successful than it can be imo. MS as a parent company has a record of cutting and running on these issues. Sony is clearly in gaming for the long run even with small profits, MS is in it to beat the competition. Facing the prospect of 7 more years with a black hole in their spending I think the Xbox One will have trouble being competitive. We'll see, I plan to be here to talk about it for years to come.

I agree with World, Nintendo is riding a dead horse and Microsoft started really rough this generation, the fact that most FPS runs at native 1080p on the PS4 is telling, I would expect IW to keep pretending the XBone is the equal of the PS4, but they showed otherwise right of the bat...
Since the PS4 is made of less expensive parts, I would hope that Sony can revise and discount the price faster this time around. If they can bring it down to $200 in three years I believe it has a shot at the PS2 crown :)

Halo is not as big as people make it out to be. Both GTA and COD sell better than Halo on the Xbox and those fans could careless about the Xbox as they can play them on the PS4. I have been reading reviews about how Live has taken a step back from last generation and I can see those fans jumping to PSN. COD and BF have sold more on the PS4 already so that all Sony needs to dominate the US. Then with Destiny releasing on both platforms it will over shadow Halo. People forget that Halo was a none factor two generations ago as was Live when the PS2 destroyed the Xbox. The only reason the 360 lead in the US was because of broken consoles and a year head start. No one I know personally who had a 360 is getting an X1 ...and these were some huge 360/Halo lovers.

i just hope the XO struggles enough so MS has to slash it's price aggressively.
Then at a $150-$200 hardware buy-in I could consider if getting Killer Instinct, 5-6 Halo games, and whatever odd yet-to-be-announced exclusives that'll haphazardly appear only on XO would be worth my time.

EDIT: and no, sunset overdrive isn't one of them =p

It would have been fun if they were still around on this site, some of those who predicted the doom of the Playstation when the architectural shift became known. It would have been a pure sadistic pleasure to hear the tone of their flute now.

Cause *man* how I was accused for being nothing but a PC fanboy and a straight up TROLL for being enthusiastic and defending this move by Sony.

I think at one point they started eating some crazy berries. Used to be plenty insightful. A certain sub-par jrpg may have warped their mind. Not sure.

Fortunately, I'm one that knows very little about the ins and outs of architecture, so I never had an opinion. I can build my own PC... but that is the height of my abilities and knowledge.

I never joined that chorus because it was clearly a personal reaction and not one based in reality.

It was always personal all along, and very fanatical. It was just well camouflaged behind a smokescreen of rationality.

Like the religious belief in Vita. It was completely unthinkable that it would do anything else than fly off the shelves. And if you disagreed you were but a filthy disbeliever.

Or the conspirational conviction that more or less the entire world was against Sony and Playstation.
Completely fanatical.

In europe[exept the uk] and Japan xbox was already beaten, now clearly PS has beaten xbox also in the uk ,and also in the usa clearly PS4 is the king, making it worldwide logically number 1!
Maybe in the usa xbox will get a little bit closer to the PS4 in the future?,but i guess that the PS4 will stay also the number 1 in the usa:worldwide domination!

Latest news about the Xbone here in Norway: The launch may be delayed further, from well into q3 2014!

Ok, might as well say it: Norway is now Playstation Country. Welcome.

PS1 sold more than the Wii so the Wii is the third highest selling console. I still think the PS3 will surpass it.
