Report: PS4 Will Be This Generation's "Leading System"
Sony's PlayStation 4 is off to a good start.
The manufacturer announced that 2.1 million units had been sold in the first two weeks of the console's existence, making it the best PlayStation platform launch in history.
But according to a DFC Intelligence report (cited by GamesIndustry.biz), it's not only the best launch in PlayStation history, it's also the single best console launch in all of gaming history. That 2.1 million number easily outstripped the previous record-holder, the Nintendo Wii, which sold 1.6 million in its first two weeks. One distinction- The PS4 was available in North America and Europe in those first two weeks, while the Wii was available in Japan and North America.
The PS2, which went on to become the best-selling game system of all time, sold 1.4 million units in Japan alone when it launched back in March of 2000. DFC Intelligence took it a step further and said the PS4 would be the "leading system of this generation." However, it probably won't be able to top the PS2...it's likely that nothing ever will again.
"The initial success of the PlayStation 4 bodes well for its future. The PlayStation 2 and Wii went on to be the best selling console systems ever. DFC Intelligence does not believe that the PlayStation 4 will surpass those systems but reiterates its forecast that the PS4 will be the number one system of this generation."
Will the PS4 indeed outstrip the Xbox One worldwide? Very likely. How's about in the US? We'll see...
