The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Dev: "It's Very Easy To Over-Design"

When it comes to massively gigantic games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the developer has to be careful not to over-design.

That's what CD Projekt RED gameplay producer Marek Ziemak spoke about during a recent Gamasutra interview. He said creation of the game is daunting and challenging, but you have to remember the core features that absolutely must be included:

"It's very easy to overdesign, or spawn too many ideas. Because basically, I think RPG is a genre that can have an unlimited amount of features and it will still be okay for the whole game -- because it's this type of a game.

The more options you have, sometimes, the more fun for some players. Except 90 percent will not use half of them. But still, the game will not be broken because of the new options you have in the game."

Ziemak added that prior experience helps, and the team knows they have a "basic amount of features" that they have to deliver. After that, they continue to add "a bit more" with each new installment in the franchise, so they can be assured of expanding without ditching that which makes the game great. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is slated to be released some time next year and when it arrives, you had best clear your calendar for a while.

'Cuz it's gonna be big.

Yeah It's stuff like this that sounds pretty ominous, are they gonna lose some of the focus? What if things are tacked on and the core is never polished.

Well it's still my most anticipated ps4 title.

Did you both not understand what they said.

They said its easy to pile on features but they don't do that until they are done polishing the core features they NEED to get done for the finished title.

Also they wouldn't release an unfinished product and even if they did they would patch it and update it for free because they are gentlemen.

On the same boat as you guys are. I really look forward to playing The Witcher 3 on the PS4. I read so many good things about the first two games and that CD Projekt Red is an excellent developer. I'll see if I can play the first two games on the PC but that may not happen with my current backlog.

well yeah there is a fine line between a gud amount of options and over the top OTT but yeah a few too many is too bad.

i just hope some of those ideas go into improving the combat.
its such a shame how many amazing RPGs are out there, but are brought down by such simplistic boring combat.
skyrim for instance probably my favourite world, but jesus christ the combats so simple and basic it bores the death out of me!
why cant we see RPGs with complex combat and weapon variety like kingdoms?
same thing goes for platformers, i started playing knack last night and its actually not such a bad game.
again just the simplistic boring combat bringing it down, well so far.
but seriously, whenever we think of platformers why is it always such simplistic boring combat?
its either jump jump for sonic and mario, or one hit wonders like knack.
back in the ps1 days it was fine, but in ps4 days, well, you kinda expect things to advance a little.........

The combat in TW2 is fantastic. If you play it in a harder mode the amount of things you need to consider is pretty high.

You need to use your alchemy properly, signs, and dodge all in harmony with one another.

The game even in normal when it was first released was hard, but they balanced it a bit more later.
