Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition May Be Prettier Than You Think

The upgraded Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will release for next-gen consoles in North America on January 28, 2014.

When it was announced, we learned it would run natively in 1080p high-definition, and there would be other visual upgrades, such as Lara's "more realistic" hair. But that might only be the tip of the iceberg.

In the Crystal Dynamics forums, executive producer Scot Amos answered questions concerning the new next-gen iteration of the well-received reboot. Someone wanted to know if a patch would be coming to the PC version to make it look prettier, and Amos responded that they were happy with the PC version as it is. He also elaborated on the graphical upgrades for the PS4/Xbox One versions:

"The work that went into the PS4 and Xbox One versions started at the end of the X360/PS3/PC versions. They were our foundation that we then built on top of. The amount of extra work - 3 studios and a full year of development - have pushed the boundaries beyond just TressFX and upgraded textures.

We now have a new particle system, new lighting work and enhanced shadow-casters, tons of more visual storytelling elements (more debris, more details on walls, more density in the environment for vegetation), upgraded characters (Lara and main story NPCs), and we've also put all of the DLC materials into this version for PS4/Xbox One. We are very happy with the PC version we released and felt these new additions and changes were something custom just for next-gen consoles at the moment."

Bet you're a little more excited now, huh? Of course, I may find it difficult to play through the game again just 'cuz it looks better. I already nailed my 100% the first time around and I loved it; come the end of January, I think I'll still be playing one of my Big 3 (GTAV, GT6, ACIV: Black Flag). But if you missed Tomb Raider earlier this year, the Definitive Edition is a definite must. The game is just that much fun.

Im definitely getting it because TR was one that I let into my permanent collection, plus I just plowed through the campaign and was just about to go back and do a thorough play when this was announced. It was already pretty amazing for a multiplat, the next gen version should be worth the collection too.

I hope the SP DLC makes it over.

bah, nah. I already know your collection has an unhealthy dose of awkward titles, like Two Worlds 2: GotY Edition, Catherine, Binary Domain, and that SEGA covert ops RPG (always. I always forget it's name)

Alpha Protocol. And I think it's folks who only play the "best of the best" that are unhealthy gamers. I get to experience and enjoy a vast array of creativity and innovative variety by looking past a few flaws that don't allow them into mainstream acceptance.

Actually I sold Binary Domain since they gave it out free on Plus. I toyed with the idea of keeping it but my ending and scenario was perfect, I don't need to taint it by looking for more outcomes.

I got this earlier this month on my birthday, but now I'm not even gonna touch it. Usually I don't buy games twice but seeing as I've never played it, I'm thinking the Ps4 version sounds better.

Truly an epic game that must be bought twice. I will see how my money situation is around that time. I really want Diablo III Reaper of Souls to release!!!!!

I concede now to underline that he was right about the three studios thing; though I've read elsewhere that it was only a part of the teams of CD and UFG with most of the work handled by Nixxes. Anywho, it seems kind of ridiculous that all this work has gone into it and, ultimately, the only benefit is that it looks prettier than it did before. There's no new content and no real reason to upgrade unless you simply must have the best possible graphics and would you not be a PC gamer if that was the case?

I never got around to buying/playing Tomb Raider though, so I'll be getting this edition whenever I get a PS4; so long as it doesn't turn out to be plagued by bugs.

I'm glad I waited to play it. I'm curious, however, if they'll just release an upgrade patch for the PC version, as the core game runs on deals for less than $15 fairly often, even under $10.

EDIT: This would seem to me the title will receive a sequel, despite S-E's "disappointing" sales.

I don't think an upgrade could upgrade this game, it seems rebuilt from the ground up in many instances. And they are cranking away at a sequel last I heard.

So I would say no to that patch.

He said he was only willing to discuss the PS4 and Xbox One versions. He didn't rule out a possible PC edition. Besides it still won't have 3D support that the PC version had and it's adding TressFX that the PC version already had as well. The biggest difference will be new character models, but I'm happy with the original models so that's not a big deal to me. So it's more of a port of the PC version then anything else.

This is why I wait to buy games, there is always a better version later. So in the end I may play my games a year later than everyone else, but I get the best version for less than half the price.

I'm right there with ya (though maybe not always, often there is)! It's often the case I find with games with heavy or at least moderate DLC support (in some cases very little too though) or remasters/upgrades of that type (such as the PS3 Trilogies/Collections.) :)

ahhhhhhh, yay?
seriously, crystal, stop wasting your and 2 other development studios time, and get back to work on where you belong, full fledged sequels!
year spent on this, could of been a year spent on sleeping dogs 2, and a tomb raider sequel.
time and money MUCH better spent!
but of course $E wont let that happen till they meet their ridcliously lofty sales expectations.
sigh.
