Rumor: Two Assassin's Creed Projects In The Works For 2014

Some avid fans wouldn't have minded if the vaunted Assassin's Creed franchise took a year off in 2014. I wouldn't.

But according to the latest rumor, Ubisoft has not one, but two separate AC installments slated to release next year.

One is in development exclusively for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U while the other is being made only for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On top of which, the source in question said the franchise is undergoing a "massive re-scope," whatever that means. The latest entry, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, was critically acclaimed despite representing a significant departure from the tone and structure of past installments. So, what "re-scope" might they be referring to...? They better keep the core of the series alive.

It's not a bad idea to create two separate games for the new and "old" systems, though. I put "old" in quotations because only in the electronics industry does something new come out and a few weeks later, the previous models are suddenly "old."

It better be a Vita game and PS4 game, or I'm officially done with this series.

Freaking overkill at this point...

We may get a follow up of Black Flag on PS3 and others and a new theme on the PS4...?

I think that could be counter-productive since people want to be on last-gen or current-gen, not both. One would have much more sales than the other... don't shoot yourselves in the foot, put it on Vita or something.

aaaaaaaand this is news how?
we have the HD remake of liberation releasing next year for ps3 and 360, and i wouldent be surprised to see next years AC exclusive to next gen systems.
ubisofts hardly shy to making exclusive games.

Frankly, if this is true it's pretty flippin' stupid. To me, the series already feels as though it's stretched too thin; I'm not even interested in keeping up with the release schedule. How is releasing two different games for the different console generations going to help that?
I'll admit that it could actually be a brilliant move in unshackling the PS4/XBO version from the limitations of those consoles' forebears, but wouldn't doing this effectively double the amount of work, and cost of development while there is the possibility of the two different games cannibalising the sales of each other, even if there is a gap between the releases and that isn't likely with Watch_Dogs expected to release earlier in the year.

As for the rescope... maybe it just alludes to another shift. I mean, the removal or scaling back of the sailing business could be construed as a "re-scope", no?

Bring it! Can't wait for more AC. Black Flag is the most engrossing game I've played in years. I bet the "re-scope" is a reworking of the battle system, a frequent complaint of players and, IMO, the most obvious part of the game needing some retooling. Make it more Arkham like and you'll make a lot of people very happy.

Ubisoft did this with Splinter Cell Double Agent. Where the XBox and Xbox 360 games were completely different. Strangely enough, I read the Xbox version was better respected than the 360 version.

EDIT: I'm also wondering if PC gamers will get the shaft. That is, will the last-gen version be ported or the current gen? time will tell.

IMO this series has always been overrated, it doesn't help that they release a "new" version every year cause now your fans seem to be getting tired of it as well. I see it slowly dying with COD.

I'd be happy if they're essentially the same stories, but different games given the different capabilities of both systems (a bit like Lego:Lord of the Rings for consoles/handheld). If they're two completely different stories, it's a bit wacko.
