Using The Dual Shock 4 Touchpad In Thief Is "Really Intuitive"

The Dual Shock 4's touchpad has been a common topic of conversation among gamers.

Is it just a gimmick? Or does it really enhance the overall experience? Well, Thief developer Eidos Montreal feels it's the latter, because they're effectively using the touchpad for the upcoming reboot.

In speaking to GamingBolt, level designer Steven Gallagher talked about how the touchpad is extra intuitive:

"The PS4 touchpad is used to quickly select items from your inventory and switch arrowheads – it’s really intuitive and people that have played it really like it. We also have the light on the front of the pad changing color to indicate when you step out into the light – it flashes white when you step into the light and goes dark blue when you’re in shadow. It’s subtle but when you’re playing in a darkened room it’s really cool and helps you know when you’re in danger."

Gallagher also referenced the length of the campaign, which is always important in any game that doesn't feature a multiplayer component. He didn't give an exact number, but he did say that those who want to find all the hidden treasures and explore to their heart's content will appreciate the "huge city." If you'd rather be more aggressive, obviously, it won't take you as long. You should definitely stop and smell the roses!

Maybe the best recent example of that is Dishonored, where the length really depended almost entirely on your play style. As for the touchpad, I still say it's little more than an unnecessary feature, but if used correctly, I'm sure it'll work out fine. You used the OWL drone in Killzone: Shadow Fall with the touchpad and that was quick and easy, so...

Thief is scheduled to launch for next-gen platforms in February.

I thought it might at least be somewhat useful for changing weapons etc.

What turned me off on Thief was that video where they made it out to be some sort of "hate the rich" socialist type of thing. I don't need to pay money to listen to somebody's political sermonizing.

LOL That's like some people who accused Mario Kart games of spreading communism among the young.

According to some Conservatives, Mario Kart racing is all about punishing those at the top (those in the lead in a race) and giving a handout to those at the bottom (by giving them blue shells, stars or thunder to hurt those in the lead).

Plus if you reverse the title of the game, you almost can spell the name of a famous commie: KARl MARx

Man, why can't people just play games and forget about politics?

The touch pad is nice when utilized. I really like it's ease of scrolling in and out of the map in AC4, and of course it was implemented very well in KZ Shadowfall. It depends on its use because in BF4 all it does is take the place of the select button. That's hhow it's going to be, sometimes utilized very well while other times not at all.

I personally loved it in Killzone. I hope it's used more often.

I really, really look forward to try the new controller, especially since it seems to have been improved on all the stuff I didn't like about the PS3 controller (weight, size and trigger buttons).

I've not read a single bad word about the new Dual Shock.

The controller is the best thing about the system in my opinion. And the internal mic and touch pad are some of the better additions. But the comfort leads the way; the R2 and L2 buttons were strategically placed and shaped to feel more like ttriggers and take the place of the L1 and R1 buttons. It's super slick.

except in a dark room you cant see the light unless you keep holding the controller up then it gets really annoying and distracting.
really wish $ony would let us turn the f*cking thing off, the DS4s battery life is PATHETIC because of it!
i feel like ive gone back to the ps1 days having the controller wired all the time.
touch pad for quick selecting items a neat idea, but whats wrong with the directional buttons?
unless there being used for something else.
really wish $ony used a touch screen instead, yea it would of hiked up the price, but they could of used it for so many more features.

The DS4 battery life is the same as the DS3. It's tried and true. You must have gota faulty DS4, as always.
