Pick The Sleeper Hit Of 2014

As you know, there are a lot of hugely anticipated games scheduled for 2014.

But which title is currently flying under the radar that you anticipate will hit big? Which one will surprise critics and avid gamers alike? Which is the one that, when you look back at the year, you'll say: "That came out of nowhere and it was just totally awesome."

The hard part about making such a selection is that very often, such games aren't heavily promoted. They really do come out of nowhere. They're a downloadable title that nobody saw coming, or a game from a relatively unknown studio that just took the gaming world by storm. 2013's Metro: Last Light is a good example of a game that, though it did have some promotion behind it, basically stole the hearts of many without much fanfare. It's also fun when everyone expects a game to blow and yet, wonder of wonders, it steps up and delivers the goods.

I'd like to say something like Thief but that's too high-profile. A pure stealth game will never sell like a shooter, but the name itself is iconic and it's receiving plenty of attention. Do you have any great ideas for games to look out for? Projects that are just getting into the headlines now, but aren't really expected to garner widespread critical acclaim?

The Order. It sounds like they are putting a ton of effort into it to make it both engaging and thrilling. On top of which it sounds like they will implement a lot of features so it impresses graphically.

I wouldn't really call the order a sleeper though...

Why? It's a brand new ip, it's not necessarily in the spot light, and its being done by a developer who's never created a console game.

It's could position itself to be in the same position that Uncharted: Drakes Fortune was in. Which was a sleeper.

It's also a AAA production, but I think you both have a case either for or against The Order making that status. It could always get a lower score but loyal cult following.

I suppose it being A A A that it's in some way out of the topic. But I just look at where it's coming from and its potential.

It's such a naked year... if Soul Saga makes it I'm really counting on my classic JRPG loving friends to all freaking plunk down their money and make it a hit.

Also The Witness or Daylight could do the trick.

We won't know till it hits (some of) us.

The rest will know a year from now and still probably won't ever get around to it.

I'm enjoying Metro Last Light as I only picked it up recently. Have been reading the novel Metro 2033 to get into the mood also. Very cool. Love a dark Russian novel...

Sleeper hits for 2014? Its a bit of an oxymoron. If we know what the sleeper hits are already then they technically aren't sleepers...

Therefore I predict Valkyria Chronicles 4 for the PS Vita. Sleeper hit of 2014. (I can dream!)

Yeah that's kind of my thinking so I chose a new ip that people might be looking forward to that we don't know a whole lot about.

Metro Last Light is fantastic. It's the "Surprise Of The Year 2013" for sure.

South Park: The Stick Of Truth.

People expect bugs and it mediocrity from Obsidian, thing is, with this game they've had plenty of time to iron out the kinks and its not really open world. Also having the brilliant writers of SP writing, we can expect a good (heh) story out of them. And to top it off, they're big rpg fans so that might help.

I would agree if it was releasing on new consoles. Since its been delayed many times and will be stuck on the PS3 and 360 I expect mediocre reception.

honestly after seeing 2014s line up theirs way to many big name games

drakengard 3 it may be the third in the series but it has always had a very small audience and honestly theirs no game that plays like drakengard 3

Hack and slash with a dragon able to be used on land and aerial missions

I'm hoping Murdered: Soul Suspect does well. I don't want to see average reviews, I want to see excellent reviews!

I think that there are several titles that might fit the bill; one of which is Murdered: Soul Suspect. It's not gonna set the sales charts alight, but something tells me that the critics are gonna love it.

Another is called Raven's Cry. It seems to be similar to Assassin's Creed: Black Flag with its theme of piracy, its 17th century Caribbean setting and its adventure/RPG blend. It just seems really cool, and I have a feeling it'll be right up World's alley, if no-one else's: it's coming from the same developer as the Two Worlds games.

Finally: Lords of the Fallen. There was a bit of a hoorah about this one last year, I think. It's an RPG from the same team that did Venetica, but it's looking really, really promising.

As an honorable mention, I'll say Scivelation. First heard about that one years and years ago, but it's been radio silence for a long time. It's one of those games that just seems worth mentioning :)

Yup I'm watching Raven's Cry like a hawk, I know it will have that beautiful Reality Pump engine and great open world RPG elements so I'm all in. Folks make fun of Two Worlds II but it got about 2 million in sales and has a cult following, I'd call that a sleeper hit.

Hmm.. never heard of Raven's Cry until just now. It certainly looks interesting. I'll be keeping an eye on it from here on out.

hard, because we really dont have many small games announced now do we?
murdered soul suspect and south park the stick of truth are the only two i can think of.
everything else, akin to this industry, its curse really, is being hyped up as the second coming!
exact reason why 99.999999999999999999% of things end up being MASSIVE disappointments!
id say the evil within, but everyones hyping that up as the true successor to RE, so thats hardly a sleeper hit!
the sleeper hit category has almost been reserved for the indie developer, everything else nows just been far too built up.
hell, look at rocksteady.
a few years ago no one knew who they were, and now everyones chomping at the bits to learn what their next game is!
same goes for arkane, no one knew who they were but thanks to dishonoured there one of the most popular beloved developers out there!

I wouldn't be surprised if Infamous: Second Son is that game. The franchise has done reasonably well even if it hasn't been a massive seller. If Second Son is as good as it appears then it might find a welcome reception from all of those PS4 owners looking for something to play on their new consoles.

Yeah Wolfenstein could do it, I don't think it will be a huge seller but I think the gameplay is something people want without knowing they want it. They think they want more military games but what they really need is a crazy old school FPS.

I do know some titles that I am very curious about but they are all for PC I'm afraid:
Planetary Annihilation, Castle Story, Starforge Alpha, Rust...

But I hope we will see not just a new IP coming out of the blue, but a new developer too. New devs are exciting.

Anyone remember the games from Gamescom? I think it was Rime or something like that, that really caught my interest.

I'm hoping that The Evil Within performs well. True survival horror games are virtually nonexistent on the home consoles nowadays. And if the games is successful the genre might see a revival. That and Capcom might hopefully get a clue and return Resident Evil to its roots... Nah.. that last one is probably asking too much.

I would love a RE game on PS4 and we all know there will be one eventually but watch it mimic Operation Raccoon City and be all action and no scares. Need to take a page out of the book of Dead Space.
