Not Enough Memory In PSP-1000 For Skype

By now, you've probably already heard about Skype for the PSP. The Internet communications service utilized by over 246 million people worldwide will soon be available on the PSP Slim & Light, and it's a nifty little feature that only amplifies the functionality of Sony's handheld. However, some loyal PSP owners wanted to know why Skype wouldn't work on the old PSP model, and according to ThreeSpeech, the answer is simple- there just isn't enough memory.

The original (PSP-1000) has 32MB of memory while the redesigned handheld (PSP-2000) has double that; 64MB.

"Although PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are identical in basic functions, there are differences in hardware specifications to some extent and, for that reason, PSP-2000 may differ in features from PSP-1000," said Sony's Nick Sharples. "We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series."

This may annoy owners of the original PSP, but it will certainly help to spur sales of the PSP-2000. The addition of Skype is only one of many reasons to own the Slim & Light, so if you don't already have one, we strongly suggest picking one up. How can you justify not making the purchase now?
