Sony: Portable Copy For PS3/PSP Drops "Later This Year"

It's a rumor that took only a short while to clear up, thanks to Kotaku contacting Sony about the subject at hand. It first arrived courtesy of PC World, when they said firmware update 2.20 for the PlayStation 3 would include Portable Copy, a feature that allows users to copy Blu-Ray movies over to the PSP for viewing.

However, this feature didn't arrive with update 2.20, which quickly invalidated the preceding announcement. It's too bad - it's an awesome idea, really - and it would certainly improve the connectivity functionality of the PS3 and PSP, which has been a primary goal of Sony's. But don't despair: it may not have come with 2.20, but it is on the way. Sony Pictures told Kotaku that they plan to release the first Blu-Ray movies with Portable Copy "later this year," although we don't have an exact release date. Of course, this may also require a firmware update for the PSP, so Sony is currently working on this process to make the technology available for 2008 is out.

Forget about UMD; Blu-Ray on the go is the way of the future! As soon as we learn more about an estimated launch date for Portable Copy, we'll be sure to let you know.

Yep, I can't wait!
I'll get it, but not until later.
I'll have to wait for the reviews.
This just isn't my cup of tea.
