Rumor: EA Targeting Epic Games

After Electronic Arts withdrew its offer to buyout Take-Two Interactive, the rumors have begun yet again: what will EA try to buy next?

Well, the current popular opinion is that the world's largest video game publisher now has their cross-hairs fixed on Epic Games, creators of such blockbuster franchises as Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. According to GameGuru, EA continues forward in its attempt to reclaim some of the hardcore gamers they've lost in the past few years, and they plan to do this by releasing a bunch of IPs. Games like Dead Space are clearly part of this business philosophy. It seems EA's goal is to "fund the development of the next generation of Unreal technology and acquire exclusive licensing rights over it (Unreal 4.0)." Essentially, EA wants their name to be on future Unreal and Gears titles, and they also want to have access to the new Unreal 4.0 engine, which is in development now. In fact, GameGuru claims an EA employee has already "shifted" over to Microsoft during the creation of Gears of War 2 so as "to ascertain the potential and viability of the series in the future."

Just because EA pulled out of the Take-Two deal doesn't mean they're going to sit on their laurels; you should've realized that. And of course, PlayStation 3 owners now have one big question: if EA acquires Epic, does this mean Gears will come to Sony's platform in the future? EA doesn't do exclusive...
