PS3 And 360 Are For Gamers, Wii Is For...Everyone Else
I was one of the first to stand up and applaud Nintendo for making the decision to avoid a head-on confrontation with Sony and Microsoft. They took a different route and struck gold...lots of gold. But after 2008 and looking forward to 2009, the evidence is clear: the Wii is not a next-gen gaming platform. It's a gadget. A toy. Something the entire world can easily get behind - I'm not denying that - but also something that obviously doesn't need "AAA" next-gen software to be successful. And because this flies directly in the face of the unwavering rule that a system can't be popular without the games, this proves the Wii isn't really a game platform in this generation.
I've done editorials on this before, but as far as I'm concerned, this is news that everyone needs to accept. If you look at 2008 and list out the top 25 games of the year, there might be one or two Wii titles in there, and neither will have a shot in hell at securing a Game of the Year nomination, let alone a victory. And in 2009, both the PS3 and 360 will leave the Wii further behind in terms of software; there's absolutely no denying this. Therefore, for the very first time in history, the third competitor in the so-called video game console war isn't necessarily a machine that caters to gamers. In fact, one can argue it caters to non-gamers more than anything. The commercials, the buyers, the demographic; I don't see gamers anywhere. I see a lot of people who find the simple technology to be magical and new, those who last played a video game back in 1983 in the arcades. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just saying...
And of course, I'm sure we'll get a ton of replies saying things like, "I have all 3 consoles and I'm a gamer!" Yes, I'm aware that gamers own the Wii, but I do have one question- how many out there who call themselves gamers only own the Wii? And here's a better question- of the people who only own a PS3 or 360, how many can be considered avid gamers compared to those who only have a Wii in the living room? The statistics might surprise some people if these numbers ever came out, but they wouldn't surprise me. At first, I was intrigued by a video game console that apparently doesn't need any new software to continue to sell millions of units. Then I realized it's not the software that even matters; it's the gimmick. Nintendo knew they couldn't compete in a technical sense this generation, so I thought they were trying another tact to appeal to gamers, but in fact, they were bypassing the avid gamer crowd altogether. They went after everyone else.
Hence, don't misunderstand this article. That was a genius move on the part of Nintendo, and all the more impressive considering that "everyone else" typically associates the word "Nintendo" with video games. Don't we all have parents who used to call all our game consoles "Nintendos" even when they weren't? So this legendary company found a way to say, "hey, we've got something for you, too...check it out!" That's an amazing maneuver and I will forever remain in awe of the Wii project. I swear I will. But as a gamer, I don't own a Wii and probably never will, and the same goes for just about everyone else I know. And to drive the point home even further, everyone I know who isn't a gamer...owns a Wii. Get it?

but as for the wii.. i see a system with twice as many decent exclusives as the competition.. so the competition in my eyes look like a poor man's PC.. no individuality to separate one from the other..
the wii is following an amazing strategy to be the niche secondary system
personally i would be satisfied with just a gaming pc and a wii
now maybe if the competition had more than a handful of games that weren't rentals because they're too obsessed with box bulletpoints to create a single player that isn't an afterthought or a multiplayer that isn't tacked on.. then we'll talk
but look at it this way..
the 360 only had 1 third party AAAE this year.. which will most likely be going to PC
weren't people claiming nintendo needed more third party support? does SE have 4 exclusives planned for the competition? capcom has 2 on the wii, what about the competition? exclusive vanillaware game check... did the competition lose any games to their competitors? and I mean it's no longer on the original platform like monster hunter 3...
if HD next gen systems make the wii look like a toy since specs are so important, doesn't that mean HD gaming consoles are toys in comparison to a pc.. which most console gamers seem too inept to be able to build
oh.. sonic unleashed, pes 08, shaun white snow boarding.. all scored worse on the competition.. i thought HD was supposed to make every game perfect?

Nintendo indeed bypassed the gamer and went straight to the usually "non-gamers" public.
All the people I know who have a Wii and talk about it are people that haven't played video games for 15-20 years or even never before. Nintendo through their brilliant marketing have managed to get a lot of people to view the Wii as social gaming but not a video game console.
I hear people saying: "Play the Wii" but not "play a videogame". Of course they are not fooled but they kind of pretend that it's not a video game, it's different...
As a gamer I have played the Wii and find it fun but I am not interested in owning one.
I think we have a clear split Wii / 360 & PS3.
I say: Well done Nintendo for the Wii and your excellent marketing, but the Wii is not for me!
Of course Nintendo fans will have a Wii and a lot of gamers will have one too just to be able to play everything. I can see the reaction on your article are defending the Wii and its games. The Wii doesn't need to be defended, it's selling like hot cakes and doesn't have to prove anything any more.
Nintendo have chosen a path and will stick to it. No need to deny it. There are a few good "traditional" games for "traditional" gamers on the Wii but this is not the mainstream and the main target of the console.
Once again, great article and a very concise summary of the situation.

And honestly Game of the Year awards don't give me a big impression that whatever won deserves it's title, they're highly over rated and leaning too much on one demographic gamer. Always turning out as best FPS, best Racing game, best Sports game, and best Casual game, slamming all types of casual game genres into one category.
and what defines gamer now a days?
Does me not having much of a preference for FPS games make me less of a gamer than anyone else?
I like Fighting games, Racing games, Puzzle games and RPGs and so far all of those slots have been fulfilled with the Wii.
Yes, the Wiis software line up is not everything I'm looking for in the console but I doubt it'll stay that way after recent sales and developer interest. I mean just look at how the DS started off.
One note for those who say that the Wii is a gimmick please look up Blue Ocean Strategy.
Calling the Wii a gimmick for video games is like calling the iPod a gimmick for music.

Oh wait, sorry, I forgot, you are the person that defines what a gamer is, and it's what you as an individual deems is a videogame machine. Cool.
Well, I'm off to play Super Mario Galaxy-- IGN's GOTY for 2007.
