Acclaim Executive Confirms PSP 2?

Although there have been plenty of rumors concerning the supposed PSP-4000 that's currently in the works, and the fact that Sony has always denied any speculation concerning the PSP 2, it's hard to ignore when the Acclaim CCO basically comes out and confirms the existence of the latter.

According to Kotaku, Acclaim's chief creative officer, David Perry, said he recently spoke to a developer who is "working on it [PSP 2] right now." This would indicate a fall release in his eyes, despite any insistence on Sony's part that a follow-up to the PSP won't release this year. Said Perry:

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me. I've been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the Playstation Portable relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market. Look at what Apple is doing now. Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal."

Those are some pretty candid thoughts, and it has been suggested in the past that a UMD-free PSP might be a breakthrough portable unit for Sony. Remember, the concept of a digital download-only age for gaming has been discussed, and if this is true, the PSP 2 will be the first true gaming unit to rely entirely on digital download. Perry even says the "ultimate goal" for the PSP is "to go 100% digital," but it also "stands to reason" that the PSP 2 will be backwards compatible. That's certainly good news for current PSP owners. This time, maybe Sony will finally make a confirmation in response to Perry's words, but we're guessing they'll hold it until E3.

any improvements or upgrades to the PSP, will be for naught if they do not find a way to incorporate a second thumbsitck. In my opinion, of course. I honestly could care less if it's totally digital or not, as I personally like having a physical piece of media to keep on a shelf. A touchscreen is nice, but not necessary if you implement the proper control scheme. Any way: Long Live The PSP!!!!

I also read rumors that it will also have a touch screen.
Although a touch screen would be nice for web browsing, I'd rather have dual analogs for gameplay.

same here, unless download speeds get faster i'm quite happy strolling down the shops 2 get an actual disk. It just feels more, duno, real.

The Iphone is dominating the handheld market, but I don't think you need a new psp. Unless sony plans to make a new psp phone and have some decent marketing behind it, a new psp would be diving into it's own grave.

Yea its too early for the new PSP, they need another 2 years, so they would be able (by then) to encorporate all the power or at least 3/4 of a PS2 into a PSP2.

I personally think the games for the iphone and ipod touch are bad. some games are just played better with REAL BUTTONS.

Call me crazy but i would like to see more of the 2D side scrolling games for PSP

Wow, I am amazed that we are this close to the next PSP, well as long as they add in another anologe stick and make actual good RPG's for it I will be happy

*Off Subject* Is it possible to up the storage data on UMD yet cause if they can get it up to atleast 3-4 gig and hardware in it more powerful, I say let PS2 finnally die out and have the PSP2 become the new PS2 *If you get what I mean lol*

It would be but UMD has to be there or else they will alienate all of the former PSP users and there old UMD games, Sony i believe is not dumb enough to make enemies of that amount with thier next handheld venture.

what about some kind of download service that allows you to register your psp game with the barcode number or something(upc?) and then download that game into the psp since they are about 1.4GB anyway. like the Ps1 classics.

You have to really think though, if this is going to be a PSP2 they will surley up the Gigs in a game pushing it up to at the least 3. As for the download service i believe it wont work. Apple is successful in that area because they are VERY VERY VERY WELL KNOWN in the digital download area because of ITUNES (Which everyone on Earth knows about) lol.Sont haslittle tonone MAJOR experience in that field which im pretty sure will cause failer.Also Sony's PSP right now is bought for kids age 12-20 and is known for the Physical media if UMD to play games. Seeing as this age range get at least 60-85% of there games bought buy parents they wont take too well to all this Digital Distribution mess and ask about games that come on anything palpable(Im pretty sure Parent of this day n age dont know much about anything in Digital D.)......yea im jus saying D.D would cause too much of a mess when people at this time are comfortable with the Sony brand n physical media that comes with it.

the psp1 games are 1.4GB, that's the one they should put on the PS store. The new PSP2 games should come in a handy dandy 32GB SDHC. If the kids have their parents buy stuff they probably wont care about preserving their old games. Plus the umd drive (i think) is an energy sucker, and the moving parts aren't really convenient(a couple of drops and its broken). Plus they take too long to load.

But i see your point.

I've dropped my PSP (fatty) several times, once on concrete. The most damage I've done to it was when I stepped on it (under a blanket). It caused the UMD 'door cover thingy' just to sit a little out of place. The biggest problem I noticed with the PSP is how hot it gets while charging and using the internet browser simultaneously. I think that's what caused my power indicator light to burn out

yeah, i dropped my PSP(fatty) a couple of times(i was very careful, since i bought it with the money from my first job) and all i got was a cracked screen. So i sold it. only had Gurumin anyways.(yeah, i know... i'm poor) But i did know a lot of people with tape on the back of their psp for the little cover thing.

I see how everyone is talking about going digital but that would mean that there has to be a huge amount of internal memory right? Or at least a couple of gigs and the ability to add a PRO DUO. It would be nice if SONY kept the UMD drive but come out with a successor to it like say a BLU RAY mini or something, like take the same concept with the PS3 and BLU RAY but have it handheld. Maybe keep the tv out, but have it upscale PSP 1 games to 720p when plugged via ac (power cosumtion). A boy can only hope.

I dont get why the iPhone is so popular for games... All of the games suck, and a touch-screen is not usable when its the only input method. Touch-screen works if you have some buttons with it like the DS, but the iPhone is just impossible to game on, imo.
If sony allowed indie devs to make games for $99 a year like apple does they may get much more business, but they would also get a lot more junk that distracts us from the good games.

Im hoping the psp2 has the ability to emulate the ps2. Or at least convert our ps2 dvd's into a psp game. I know its asking alot, but how awesome would it be to take God of war 1 and 2 with you everywhere you go?

On my Ipod touch i mostly bought games to show off to people. But then i lost it and now everyone has an Ipod! And when i did use the games it was mostly in math class or science (:P). but the only really good game for the ipod is line rider and that was only fun whith your friends around.

I guess reducing "moving parts" to a minimum can always help with general reliability. We'll have to see what great assets the PSP2 comes with in future... interesting!

PSP 2 Should drop UMD completely. They could use mini flash cards for games (like Nintendo). If they need the backwards compatibility, they could develop a method of saving a game from UMD to a memory stick (using the original PSP) with a firmware update. If they're doing the whole digital download thing, they should put a boatload of flash memory on the thing (there are regular size flash drives with 64GB of space these days so it shouldn't be hard to put lots of flash in the PSP 2). If you misread my last sentence, I meant that flash memeory is getting increasingly compact and more feasible for a PSP.

If they made the PSP2 powerful enough to play PS2 games flawlessly and if Sony got their act together and put up hundreds of PS2 games online to download the PSP2 would sell like hotcakes.

Tru dat. I doubt it will happen though. The ps3's software meulation is still wonky and its a beast in the processing department. I wonder if they can just stuff a ps2 in the psp's case and run ps3 games natively? Perhaps a faster EE chip so we arent stuck at 300 (less than the psp has now (!!)). They can underclock to 300 when running ps2 games and run at 1ghz (idk, sounds like a good number) for psp2 games...

Maybe sony will blow all of our minds and drop a dual-core in the psp2. A dual core EE chip might work well. 300mhz for running ps2 games and 300mhz for emulating everything else (sound, gfx, etc). A 300mhz dual core doesnt sound like much, but you can get a lot more done with 2 300mhz cores than one 600mhz core.

where does everyone keep getting those numbers? who doesn't have access to the internet? I can only think of my grandparents, and they could care less about a "funstation".Now that I think about it, they do have internet, but refuse to use it.

My 5 year old niece can find internet access for her damn Webkinz.

Funny ha, thinking blue ray minis, it's possible n maybe it would stream the game fr the net since it's going digital. Sony is really pulling out the gunz now hopefully it has the second analog n a 720p screen would b sa weet. If it's a mini entertainment like the ps3 w free phone features txt,camera/camcorder ect. It would sell faster than the ds
