Rumor: Sony's New Portable Revealed As The PSP Go!

This is one of those times when the rumor has so much evidence behind it, we're almost willing to make it a statement of fact. Of course, we can do no such thing until Sony issues the official announcement, but we have a feeling it's definitely on the schedule for E3.

We're speaking about the possible impending launch of an all-new PSP; not precisely the PSP-4000 or the PSP-2 but something else entirely; something that may not feature UMD but include a touch screen. The most recent speculation says this new handheld would actually compete with the iPhone, and to add more fuel to the fire, Kotaku may have stumbled across the name: PSP Go! It was embedded in the latest 1Up podcast and evidently, some 1Up members have even seen the new unit already; it boasts "slide-out" or "flip-out" controls plus a larger screen. Now, the reason we're not linking you to this podcast is because the episode has already been edited in order to remove any mention of the PSP Go! and not surprisingly, SCEA has provided everyone with their standard response for such matters ("we can't comment on rumors or speculation"). But...oh, wait, as we sit here and write this, 1Up goes and posts the full story, which is loaded with very cool details and info.

Yes, the UMD will go away, Sony will bring 100 PSP titles to the PlayStation Store to celebrate the launch, and the release should be some time this fall. If any or all of this is accurate, you can bet it's going to be one of Sony's big announcements at E3...but can they really keep it all under wraps until June?

I think you dont understand Sony position regarding the dual stick. They just CANT add another, that will alienate the whole psp fanbase as soon as new games begin to include the second analog in the gameplay. That means that the market for new games will be dramatically reduced to almost ZERO only cause someone "needs" a second analog. Just doesnt make sense.

BTW, is up to devels to create games using, the best they can, the current psp input system, and if that helps to exclude shooters then the better. PSP doesnt need shooters. Lets bring in rpgs, action adventure, racing, mecha, horror, etc.

I completely agree... Shooters require lots of accuracy. You need to see lots of details to aim with a gun, the small screen just isn't enough to have the same experience to bring ALL the PS3 games in.

I truly believe that the new PSP will have new features, but new functions that does not change the overall gaming. Such as flash memory, screen update, touch screen (for web surfing)... In the end, you are still using the same buttons for games.

i dont agree, i think they should include a second analoge, it probly will jepordise the psp fanbase but arnt they getting rid of umd anyway, the ps3 wouldnt be much good if they where still using dvd. I have to say this one better not have just slight upgrades, but have better technology that will last a few years.

And twin sticks aren't just for shooters, the majority of action titles would benefit from them and I'm sure this would bring in a wider audience used to home consoles and their controllers.

That would be great... One thing that encouraged so much PSP piracy is because that the UMD vs Memory card battery issues. Support of digital download will see a sales boost is gaming.

as long as it has a 30-60-or 80 gb internal memory, im happy... because my psp has a 8 gb card, and its completely full, with only a few demos, and a crap load of media

WOW now this might make me buy a new PSP. I have the PSP 1000. Now let's just pray to god that this is the last PSP for a while...and by a while...I MEAN 7 years or so because I don't want to continue buying a PSP like iPod maniacs do with their iPods and stuff.

Any mention of a second analog stick? This was the biggest problem with the PSP in my eyes and they could do so much more with two of the sticks.

Didn't Sony already say that UMD is not going to be abandoned? I'm going to take all of this with a grain of salt until the official announcement.

Exactly, they said they believe UMD is the best handheld format and why would they just take out all the games they had before when moving onto the next one. Though I guess the PS3 is a good example of eliminating b/c.

maybe they'll introduce a new UMD format that doesn't have a spinning disc. I mean like a flash cartridge but no moving parts. So it can still fit in the older PSPs but save so much batteries.

the problem with this is if sony really wants to gain more market share they need to release this product sooner then sept or october. if everyone knows a new and better psp is coming sales will drop like a atomic bomb until it is released. Sony shouldnt even announce until its ready for market in my opinion.

I'm paying attention, Sony, but I'm not sold yet:

1) Will we FINALLY have two analog sticks? If the answer to this question is "yes," I'm getting warmer...
2) If there are two analog sticks, will the controls be retroactive for games that screamed out for them, like Resistance: Retribution or God of War: Chains of Olympus? If the answer's an "affirmative," I'm getting really warm...
3) Will there be some way for us to transfer all of those UMDs we already own to the Go's memory system, or are they going to try to get us to buy our libraries again? If we get the former and NOT the latter, I'm getting HOT!!!!

The Go's features certainly have their appeal, but I think most of us really want some pretty simple things the most -- a dualshock-style control layout,and a way to keep using the UMDs we already bought. Make all of this happen Sony, and you will have one impressive handheld on your, um, hands.

If the things this article says are true, and there is not 2 analog sticks, and if they drop the UMD, is just more proof that Sony does not listen to the people, and do not care what the people want. Also obviously they don't care if you can play all the games you already have on it or not and putting games on PSN so you have to buy them again is just Sony's way to make more money by making it sound like they are doing something good for you. I really wish that Sony would get it together and do it right. I wish they would start listening to what people want. I wish they would truly become the best, but I just don't see it happening if they continue to make poor decisions.

If they get rid of the UMD then they have gone wrong in my opinion, because as previously mentioned, what would we do with all previously brought games?
Although, this would leave one to imagine u already have a UMD compatible PSP to play them on?

The second analogue stick wouldn't be a good idea for me. The PSP doesn't need one to be honest. Even with a second stick, First Person Shooters still wouldn't work as the screen is too small, which someone as already mentioned aswell.
3rd person shooters, like Resistance: Retribution work well because of the mechanisms it uses in the game.

I don't mind the idea of a HDD though :)

Heard alot of speculation about the new Playstation Portable Devise! I remember before PS Home opened up, they said we would be able teleport to any place by means of a avatar psp! once it launched, they used a new device! could that be the new PSP. Whatever it is im sure it'll be great. The one thing i am keepingmy fingers crossed is for a second analog stick. This will help in that it will part bring it up the play withthe rest of the PS family, the 2 analog stick family! just cause it is a portable devise they shouldn't discriminate on it! Anything they can do, so can a portable! I've played Resistance Retribution in infectedand PsP PLus, with the PS3 remote and its great! I just think, if its gonna be new and redesigned,they should go all out! Come on we all know PLaystation is a trend setter, lertssee that happen! and they will if they:
1- ADD A SECOND ANALOG STICK
2- ADD A INTEGRATED CAMERA
3- ADD A TOUCH SCREEN
4- SLIGHTLY INCREASE SCREEN SIZE
5- THROW SOME OF THAT SIXAXIS TECH IN THERE
6- ACCESS TO PLAYSTATION HOME

Will it really compete with the iPhone? The iPhone has a built in phone which PSP Go will not. So different handhelds there. The Sony Ericcson Idou which is schedueled for Q3 is to be in direct competition wth the iPhone, so I can't see Sony releasing to different products to compete with the iPhone.

I think we really need to see it at E3, is it something to replace the PSP 3000, or a product thats going to offer us something different? Hope its not touch-screen games.

Great news! I have thought about buying a new PSP for a while (my dinosaur original PSP is still goin' strong, but it lacks all the new features). I think I'll just wait for the PSP go! to come out & then I'll get one (after I get all of the great games coming out this year for PS3)
