PSP Go! Prematurely Unveiled In Qore?

With every new day that passes, it appears we're inching ever closer to an apparently inevitable PSP Go! announcement...

Many sources have all but confirmed this new iteration of Sony's handheld although Sony hasn't made anything official. All we've seen are mock-ups like this one pictured here, and several solid theories concerning the features and design of the PSP Go! But now, it may have been prematurely unveiled: the direct link to Gaming Console Network is down, but you can find the story in question at N4G. GCN claims to have seen the PSP Go! in the upcoming June 2009 Qore episode. They won't explain how - this whole, "gee, somehow I got access" explanation is cause for suspicion - but the pictures are in abundance and as you can see, it reflects much of the speculation that has been circulating lately. If it's true, Qore reveals that this new unit will not replace the PSP-3000 (they will be sold alongside one another), it will boast a 16 Gig memory and a memory slot for more if you wish, and it's set to release in Fall 2009. All of this also gels with semi-reliable information we've seen over the past few weeks, but of course, until the press release sits before our greedy eyes, none of this is verified.

But if it's the real deal, what do you think? Is this something that might interest you? And for what reason might a consumer wish to have both the PSP-3000 and the PSP Go!...? We should find out soon enough.

They *can't* add a second analog stick. This isn't a true successor like a PSP2 or something. It is supposed to be compatible with existing PSP software (maybe not via UMD, but the software doesn't change) and exist alongside the PSP-3000.

If you add a second analog stick then developers can only use that stick if they make their games only work on the new system. Sony does not want to confuse the market like that right now.

You make a good point, this is not a PSP2. It is just a PSP-4000 with a rename to PSP Go. The PSP Go was made to compete with the iPod touch, because Apple seems to be taking away Sony's market share.

i have to agree, the lack of dual analog sticks is a bummer. It made playing Metal Gear Portable Ops unbearable. Ill probably still buy it though regardless as long as it has cool games though.

No. They *can* add a second analog nub. Developers will just need to have two control systems: the shitty one for the PSP-1000 to 3000 which they would otherwise have had to produce for any PSP without a second nub and the functional one for the new system. Most games have multiple control schemes anyway.

p.s. No second nub, no buy, no matter how slim or light or "hip" they try to make it. I'll keep using my PSP-1000 until Sony actually makes a new version that WORKS BETTER.

Apple is not touching Sony's share of the handheld game market. Their devices see in different markets and happen to play some games (mostly mini-games and casual games). The PSP on the other hand is a gaming device that can do other things, but few if any buy it primarily for anything other than games.

This PSP Go! is a reaction to a changing market, but mostly it's a reaction to digital distribution (no UMD), the drop in Flash memory prices, and advances in technology integration allowing things like BlueTooth to be included along with the sliding screen mechanism. Lots of people seem to want to push competition on Sony that's not really there.

Well if it does have that sliding screen then it technically isn't the same hardware design; so they CAN and should put a second stick.

No second stick no buy for me. It is just a limiting factor. They automatically cut a decent FPS out of the picture.

well based on the picture on that link provided, i would say that the mock up psps like the one above, looks so much better and more stylish. The one from the link looks like a palm phone, looks hideous. I would buy the new PSP GO if it looks really sleek and has great functionalities. But if its indeed the one in the picture from that link, then i would pass on the PSP GO! it would be shame on Sony

If that's a legit image on N4G, then you have to wonder why they didn't throw in the second analog stick to shut up everyone who considers it a deal breaker. Honestly when the alternative hand held game device doesn't even have analog controls at all, why is only having one considered a deal breaker by so many people?

... because the types of games possible on the DS are totally different than the types of games possible on the PSP. If I wanted SNES-style games, I'd use my GameBoy. I bought the PSP because it was a PS1/2 in my hand; I want fully-featured PS2-style games and most of those require two analog sticks and upwards of ten buttons.

Sony built next-next-gen (at the time) portable hardware, but didn't give us even a complete next-gen control system, so the game can't even run the PS1 classics of which they made so much of a fuss (and then abandoned for the most part) without creating some gimped control scheme for them (which then requires development time, etc.).

Also, they didn't make a screen which can run 480i video in its native resolution, so the HUD and text all have to be reworked in order to be legible.

Great idea for a system; middling execution.

Good answer, but it still makes no sense to me. A single analog stick is perfectly functional for many kinds of games, and as SuperStardust on the PSP proves, a slight alteration to game controls can work, even for a dual stick shooter. Perhaps the expectation that a hand held device should match the PS2 feature for feature down to the dual stick controller is an expectation too far?

I think it's fine as long as it has a memory stick slot, as for the analog it's not a problem considering that DS owners play with none.I don't think thought this had a big part of PS3 E3 showing since they made a Quore episode for it so they will probably concentrate on the new hardware coming.

P.S hearing Grand Turismo made me drool.

Anyway, just to mention something out of topic, have you guys seen the new PS3 logo at the end of the TV commercial for inFamous? no longer the spider word like Playstation 3. The logo is if i am not wrong, is the same as the logo on the rumored PS3 slim. How about that? cause people were saying that Sony never promote any logo with just "PS3".

Well, the rumor is at least partially true: I'm downloading June 2009's issue right now. Admittedly it still says "Coming Soon" in the title, but it is downloading. I'll post later whether or not it has the PSP Go or not.

The PSP Go is UMD-less, so you would have to buy a PSP-3000 if you wanted to play your old games from your busted PSP-2000. That is why Sony is selling the PSP GO and PSP-3000 along side each other.

At least in the supposed video, he says they are not dumping the original PSP. I will never, I repeat, NEVER support a digital-distribution only console.

Look up the word console in the dictionary.

Actually, don't bother:
"1. a television, phonograph, or radio cabinet designed to stand on the floor rather than on a table or shelf."
Consoles are big cabinets and, by association, more modern smaller devices of similar sort.

Qore just finished installing, and I can confirm that the PSP Go is featured in it, and the picture on this article and the N4G is accurate, though Qore just shows the black version, not that greenish color.

The video coverage of the PSP Go references E3 in the past tense, so Qore June 2009 probably isn't supposed to be available for at least a week. My buddy doesn't even have this issue available for download, so they may have pulled it due to it's early availability. I'm debating on mentioning something that they mention as being announced during E3... And before anyone claims otherwise, I'm not making this up.

if they just left the start and select buttons where they are now and put a second analog stick, it would be so much better...what about the L1 and R1 buttons...didn't even see those at all...

im thinking that this will be a pass for me...looks ugly and if its meant to be a competitor to the iphone/itouch, ill just stick with my iphone...

The L1 and R1 are still there. They're grey/silver. Look at the photos and you'll see they're on the non-sliding portion, along with the majority of the controls.

As cool as I think that would be Mikkie, don't get your hopes up for that. BlueTooth tethering isn't available on all phones even for computers, so I wouldn't expect that it'll be available for the PSP Go. I think it'll more likely support BlueTooth stereo headsets (possibly with microphones), and standard devices. I'd love to see it be able to use the PS3 controllers as well, since they're BlueTooth iirc. That would enable you to plug the thing into your TV and play a game from across a room, which I think you can currently do with the PSP-3000 via PS3 in Resistance Retribution+Resistance 2.

BlueTooth opens possibilities for more interaction with PS3 as well as using a PS3 controller to control a PSP game.

LOL! if this PSP Go! has the TV output as well as BlueTooth and the PS3 controllers will work with it, that opens the possibility of the PSP becoming a third Sony home game console....

I love all the PSP's I've had...I sorta wish I kept my original so I could get some classic games via hacking(chrono trigger mainly) Also so I could just put all my current umd games onto a memory stick cuz they are quite bulky after you've bought atleast 30 of them and try to carry all of them at once. I digress...but if that's what the new psp is supposed to look like...I gotta say, I don't like where the analog stick is, I'd have to hold my psp like a n64 controller! So either give us 2 analog sticks or please don't have that 1 right there!!!

The idea of Sony not adding a second analog stick is bogus in my mind. Ever try playing Socom Fireteam Bravo 2 with one stick? Hate it. Resistance Retribution sucks with one stick.

I kinda think tho that this new handheld may be fully compatible with you're dualshock 3 wirelessly as well. That would calm the feelings of some. I hope that becomes a feature that is available. Only thing is you need a cradle for the unit, and when you're on the go, you're not gonna take you're controller and stand with you on the bus.

SOLD, it looks great, great new upgrades and i've been saving for a new PSP since mine was broken so i'll just pick this up instead. I like the idea of not having the UMD's nice to just download and save less stuff to carry.

ive come out from the safety of the forums to speak my mind... and i say WTF!?!

there is enough plastic on that PsPgO to fit these nubs, there is no excuse apart from they just didnt want to add them. for the first time im pissed off at Sony, because that is what every psp owner has said from day one of the psp's life.. we need two anologue nubs! plain and simple!

I know this isnt the psp2, but i know that doent matter... the psp has had a huge image transformation with the pspGo, one that will probably be tweaked in the years to come, but will more than likely stay with us ....and probably carry on the design with the psp2.

not a happy bunny.

and i was going to upgrade my psp this year too, i dont think i will bother now. I think i will stick with my launch Jp 1000 series psp.. as its fine and plays all the games I need.

if anyone knows why I should upgrade to the GO or 3000 series then post something on the "whats the last game you brought" thread on the psp section of the forums, because i would like to know what you get for your money!

Just a guess, but I bet that the PSPGo! has better battery life than the previous models, and I am also wondering whether they are using a newer backlight in order to get a slimmer screen into the sliding screen part. If so, it'll most likely be more efficient. Also, I'm wondering about a die shrink on some of the components inside resulting again in better battery life. All in all this could be a new PSP for me...I already have a UMD one if I want to play a UMD game, and all new releases should be available digitally from now on.

I must admit..the world is going digital..and its happening fast!..i think it is the future gaming..BUT like everyone here..i would rather a Hard copy of a game..something to put on my shelves at home...i dont think this is made for hardcore gaming...i think..the PSP GO is gonna be more multi media the gaming...obvs its gonna be for games to but i think Sony may of designed this mainly for Music..Photos..Films..
Internet..i think PSP3000 is going to be the hardcore Gaming Handheld for sony...they will probly bring out PSP4000 next year...as a next one up for 3000..and PSP GO...well i think it was made to go head to head with I Pod..because..Sony Walkman is amazing i think..but people dont want them they want and I Pod...n i think there gonna be pushing PSP GO to go head to head with it...im dissapointed about lack of touch screen if im onest...im not mega fussed about tha second stick but...sony listen to us..just put another stick on. i doubt people will agree with me but thats what i think.

Hmm...what can I say. I sometimes feel like it's a great PSP...and then at other times feel like it's just another PSP...aka: the PSP 4000. The internal memory and bluetooth capabilities are a +. However...the design...well the design is great...as long as you don't show the control pad. The control pad just looks way too compact and just not like an actual PSP.

I don't care too much about a 2nd analog stick...since I can get through the game fine using one analog stick. Medal of Honor heroes anyone? Anyway...overall...it's just ok - but I'm sticking with my PSP 1000 - YEA BABY!!!!!!

Why? Well I still get to play my UMDs, I'll be able to buy a bunch of cheap UMD movies since Sony's trying to get rid of them now, it's just as good as any other PSP, the firmware updates are what keep the PSP 1000 going, it feels solid in my hands, the design is the best of the best, and it's the original PSP.

Unfortunately Sony will be focused almost entirely on this and Sony's PS3 stuff will be relegated to take a backseat. Everything has been announced and known anyway. I do think MS has a ton of new stuff, because they haven't announced anything as we all have been pointing out. I think Sony fans are going to be a bit more butthurt this year.

Add the second joystick along with R1, R2, R3, L1, L2, and L3 buttons. THEN I will get a PSP go!
